Right, the XRS has a much larger engine. The S model or base Matrix will achieve about the same mileage as the base Corolla.

i own a matrix xrs.. it's a wonderful ride.
It's great on gas and is great on the roads (as in the curves and suspension).

its an attractive car no doubt, but 21/29 mpg is not that good, imo. But i would still love to own it.

given it's cargo space and ability to fit/haul plenty of stuff (pets, lumber etc) the mileage is probably the best in its class.
