  • Thanks for this. It is the only good Mahjong video tutorial I could find. Everything else listed as such are either DVD trailers or in another language. I really can't tell you how happy I was to find this.

  • I mean win. Sorry. . .

  • Oh, and if you really want to be Chinese about it, say "sic" when you when. I think it means "eat".

  • I grew up in San Francisco surrounded by Chinese people, and no one I knew played Mah Jong with this method of scoring. Rather, we used a system involving fan (pronounced like fawn). I believe that method of play is more common in China. Look it up for those interested in it. It's a lot simpler in my opinion. Also, throwing your tiles in the center is way more fun.

  • lol our family usually plays this on christmas and chinese new year till about 3 in the morning

  • Excellent instruction. Very clear, very concise and easy to understand. Well done, Scott! And thank you.

  • Could someone please remind me of the rules variant with the flower wall and the seasons? I am not sure how this worked but when you broke the wall you could take from tiles placed on top.

  • So for the wind/dragon tiles, you CANNOT have a run of each and can only be used as pairs or triples of one wind/dragon tile?

  • lol ghost mahjong pieces!

  • I can read kanji but I don't speak chinese, I speak japanese :)

  • pong and chong sounds more cool than mine mine mine

  • I'm Chinese, and I'm getting taught Mahjong by a white guy. WHAT HAS THE WORLD COME TOOOOO?!

  • 5:00 magic?

  • mine mine mine

  • RON RON RON RON RON RON RON RON

  • his explanation of the point system is weird IDK.. but paying the player who either Ron or Tsumo yeah but then each other ive never seen that in a parlor....and a 1000pt limit, id love to get in on that game, i got hit with a hand the other day worth 32,000....ouch but this video is WAY to short. yea you can explain the basics of this game but i know masters who have played for decades who will say they are still learning, mahjong is just one of those games youll never master in one life time.

  • Mahjong explained in english sounds stupid. I wanna hear in it Chinese :D

  • 00:57 Mahjong is actually not about winning with your hands, but its rather about bringing down your opponents.

  • Great Video!! I am having trouble understanding the sacred discard rule. Some games that I play will not let me go out when I have Mah Jong, and I can't understand why. Do you have any knowledge of this problem?

  • @meloveissa Are you playing the japanese/ancient (old form of HK) mahjong? Because you can't win off a tile you threw from someone else, you have to draw it yourself to declare a win.

  • Really cool man. Thanks.

  • swag

  • Don't change a thing Scott, you're the shit, and this really helped

  • does any one know a site you can play mahjong for free please?

  • hard game...

  • differents in EMc riichi,japanese riichi,kansai riichi,hongkong,MCR?

  • Who wants to play one player Japanese Mahjong, other known as Riichi Mahjong? I know where the site it, PM me for info.

  • Nice review, but you should comment on Japanese version of mahjong. It's more gambling oriented and the tiles are slightly different like White Dragons in Japanese version is blank.

You forgot to mention a little more about the dead wall and kan. Specially closed kans. Anyway, it's just nitpicking. You did a nice summarizing on Asian style mahjong.

  • I found this very helpful, scoring still confuses me. I need a cheat sheet.

  • hmm are there any online english mahjong multiplayer games?

  • i laughed my @ss off at "1 bam bird"...lol

  • I AM NEW TO MAHJONG AND FOUND THIS VERY HELPFUL. THANKS!!!!

  • tumbs up if you learned mahjong by this video!

  • Friends, MAHJONGTIME administration is doing everything to keep silent about allegations of cheating in the game. But come declare that I will continue to advocate honesty in online games, do not know why they are pushing me to silence me a nickname SLAVE person is trying to intimidate me. But I will not stay silent while EASTWIN MISSLOVELY, and many others try to cheat in online games.

  • wow thanks man

i have been to wanting to learn about mah jong

  • Cool! Mahjong after Go will be next really addicting traditional board-game in our friend group. Also, even I'm not that good at English, it's really entertraining and good video. I could never see a difference between USA and Asian Mahjong. It's Riichi or Canton?

  • i love this game and i still play it now,its such a fun game!!!!!!!!!

  • I LIKE THIS TUTORIAL. But in the next one scott, could you go over more of the scoring, and the dice.

  • Good

  • This was an okay attempt at explaining the basics of Mah Jong. This guy made a horrible error in explaining the game when you call for a tile. The correct terms are pong, chow, chur and mah jong. If you said mine, mine, mine you would look like a complete buffoon. However the wagering portion of the game was right on.

  • @Thad2sana

Well calling pong, chow, chur and mah jong does also sound quite silly to me. Maybe some translation of these term would be better.

  • With a friend of mine, we created a Mahjong solitaire video game with a different way to count points. Click my name to watch video or search for the youtube video id: i5lzlnc8rKs

  • Ron ! Richii, Ippatsu, Ryou iisou, Yakuman, 32000 ten. :) Thank you beard-man, you gave me the guts to play with my friends and now i'm going to play with the Mahjong Club of Montreal :) For all the others, Mahjong is fun to play and difficult if all your friends are good :D

  • thanks for the insight!

  • This helped because I have already read a book and several online instructions and now I am able to see it played out. Thanks!

  • what about kong? that's a set of 4.

  • lol..mine mine mine...hahahaha...I m gona try tht on my friends...mine mine mine...sek wu (game)

  • mah jong is a fun game.but it singles out family members and current relationships.

  • Too bad there was no explanation of riichi mahjong. He should've called it Chinese mahjong rather than Asian.

  • @Moonbolt I thought Riichi was just a call.

  • @MattTheSpratt The ruleset(s) where you use riichi are usually referred to as riichi mahjong, or more loosely Japanese mahjong.

  • @Moonbolt Oh, okay then.

  • My parents love throwing the tiles in the middle. Makes everything more confusing and hectic. XD

  • terrific primer

  • That was a great explanation for a beginner. I know some people have commented that this was termed incorrectly or that was left out of the scoring, but these things seems like facts you can pick up when you begin to play. This was a very clear explanation of the game for someone who never understood it before.

  • Great video! Kudos to the maker of this video. Mahjong is a great game and people of all ages can enjoy.

Indeed mj is a time consuming game and requires stamina. I was kinda amused when Scott mention he didn't complete a game @ 17:22. Here in Singapore we usually play 2 complete games lasting 5hours.

  • I laughed like hell at every "MINE MINE MINE" hahaha

  • If you think MINE MINE MINE is funny, why not say MINE MINE MINE MINE MINE?

  • Im afraid i didnt get that joke :p

  • Hey, thanks, Scott! I have a very lovely set of tiles in a beautiful box, but the rules that came with them are in addition to having been written by someone whose English is pretty good, but not great, apparently scanned from typewritten copy with bad OCD software and as such rather incomprehensible in places. Now I know what to do with them! Thanks again!

  • This guy's great! Mahjong tutorials are far and few between, and this has really helped a lay person like me learn how to play. Now I just need to figure out the nuances of Japanese-style playing..

  • Are you speaking about Riichi style then (RCR)? I know a bit about it as i find it the most fun to play, HK and the others are not as much fun.

  • The numbers at the top corner is not english, it is arabic.

  • Originally, Yes. Now, no.

  • In Singapore, we still play with the 4 animals.

  • Hmm perhaps, but i cant see how thats related to the letters on wind/word tiles :p

  • Where are the animals? There are supposed to be the rat, chicken, centipede and cat.

  • This game is fun when u win money. It is very frustrating when u lose money!!

  • he would look so much more groomed and younger without the amish beard

  • You say that as though it's a good thing...

  • @snicholson I love your beard! You've actually inspired me to grow my own! :)

  • Can't really see how thats relevant to Mahjong thought. Bring skills and a good mood and then you will have a really great M-J match.

  • all i know is doing Pung,Kang,Chii and little Ron's....

Pung is easy,if someone putted a tile that you have more than 2 in our hand

    (lets say,player B discarded bamboo7,and you got 2 bamboo 7 yourself)then you declare pung

  • Well if you play with Yaku you cant do Kans, pon and chi's that often if you dont got a pon of dragons/special hands thought

  • You are awesome, I've been looking for 2 weeks how to play Mahjong, and had little results, this was clear, concise, and explained the rules better than anything else I found A++ :D

  • Mine mine mine!

  • Mine Mine mine lol

  • My family doesn't gamble while playing so we don't use points/chips. Basically we just play so that the first person who gets mah jong wins. And we just go around the table using that NWES tracker and see who got the most wins mah jongs in the end.

  • Good review, thanks Scott !

  • I also gleefully say bad words whenever someone says mahjong. Ha ha.

  • my parents played a lot... in china it becomes also part of business activities besides recreation activities. and i can also play it,i rlly enjoy playing it. some ppl play it for gambling also

  • I love the way he says pong at 08:06

  • Thanks for another awesome review, Scott. You have saved me so much money by reviewing games I'm considering. I was intimidated by mahjong, but am sitting next to my new set and eager to start playing with it. (bambird, too funny)(barrelin, island of crate, this is why I enjoy you so!) lol

  • Make things neat so its a nice relaxing game? Asians throw it in the middle so it takes more skill to outwit and remember what people have discarded. Your Western gameplay removes some of the skill and competitiveness of Mahjong.

  • nice, you only missed a few of the scoring rules for the special hands.

  • NI HAO

  • i purchased a Mahjong set yesterday can't wait to try it out

  • It's about how we play except we don't have a dead wall. We use the 12 tiles and on other side of the break to make a flower wall that is used to replace flowers and extra tile from kongs.

  • haha i love this guy! :P

  • nihao, master neckbeard

  • was a great video.

had no idea how to play before i watched this.

now fairly confident it wont take long to pick up because of this.

    thank you

  • This is a very good introduction to the game, with very clear instruction. When I went to my first game of (sorry, Scott) American Mah Jong, I had a solid understanding of the basics and terminology.

    Thanks.

  • Leave it to the Americans to make joker tiles for Mahjong. Seriously?

  • And please don't say "mine mine mine!" You're going to sound stupid. Say the right words: chow, pung, kong, mahjong.

  • i agree.

  • @LydJaGillers This is a game - an activity for amusement. It is much more important for me to have fun than it is to care if you think I sound stupid. This is _play_.

  • @snicholson Granted you're not playing with anyone that knows how to play properly. It's a very specific ruling, if you don't call it properly you get penalized for a miss call/not calling.

  • @snicholson For some people, Mahjong is for bringing home the bacon.

  • Cheers Scott for an in-depth & informative video. I'm still picking up the details but you've cleared up a lot of things for me so thanks again.

  • MINE! MINE! MINE!

  • Thank you SO much for making this video! Back when I was 17 or so, I went on vacation with my family and visited Chinatown, where I bought my first mahjong set. The rules were so poorly translated they were incomprehensible and I put the whole thing out of mind. After finding this video, though, I brushed off the dust, tried out a few games, and got my friends all hooked on it. We played it every day for a MONTH and we all still love it.

    Thanks again!

  • hong kong scientsts say playing too much can cause seizures

  • it's called tokens, not dots and the "characters" are called man-zi, which goes ten-thousand to ninety thousand.

  • i'm going to see if Kong88 can add an auto table to the winning of a tournament since they have new mahjong tourneys.

  • Damn Americans. Its not dots. Technically its Tong Zi. But at least call them CIRCLES!

  • Whenever I play with my filipino friends, they say "balls" instead. Hehehe...:-P But I agree, at least call it circles. Leave it up to us Americans to mess up an ancient game.

  • The scoring system is not right.

  • While talking about "Kongs", one part that was missing, where if someone has collected a 3 of a kind, and if they happen to collect the 4th piece on their own.

In that instance, that person can declare "Kong" and reveal the 4-of-a-kind which allows them to take a tile from the "dead pile".

Another way it's done is if they have previously done a pong and their 3-of-a-kind is face up and draw the 4th piece later, this can also be declared a "kong" to lay down, and draw from the "dead pile" too.

  • I prefer the style he mentioned of discarding everything in the middle into a big mess. It forces players to pay closer attention to what they're discarding to make it more challenging to figure out what they need rather than having it out organized making it easier for people to just look rather than remember.

  • Thanks for the clear explanation! I have always been interested in Mahjong but when I found out it was just matching pairs I lost interest. Now I see why adult Chinese like to play it.. as you say.. it resembles playing cards! Thanks again!

  • I'm wanting to learn Majong so i understand this anime i'm watching called Saki, its pretty cool.

  • Holy fuck that's actually why I'm here too.

    This is sad.

  • I'm watching Saki too, looks quite interesting but a bit girly. x_x

Another anime about Mahjong that I'd recommend is Akagi, it's a bit old, but i really enjoyed that anime!

    Thanks snicholson, nice explanation!

  • Thats why i'm here too.

  • what he is teaching is chinese mj, not the jap mj, total diff play styles

  • thought I'd learn mahjong...Hmm? This sounds so fucking complicated think I'll stick to rocket science.

  • This is great work and really promoted Mahjong well. I am a chinese and I know its a complex game, many western ppl try to learn this and failed. So its really good that you have spent sometime to produce this video and the self-make instruction sheet.

For this, I just want to drop you a note to say thank you.

P.S. I think you haven't mention in the video that Mahjong is really a 4 players game.

  • hmm im 19 tis year n i have been playing mahjong 4 7 years... hmm i think de way i learn is not so confusing den tis video.

  • thanks so much!

well i get a game where you have to unlock images... and to do that you have to play this board game.. the problem was.. that the gmae was complete in chinese XD i didnt understand anything.. but now i know a bit more

    well thank you alot...

i dont catch everything... because i speak spañish.. and its dificult for me understand you.. but its ok

    =)

  • ...the dead pile...I'm kind of confused.

So you break the wall (however that's done) and keep playing until you get down to the beginning of where the last 7 rows are...and you don't draw from there unless you've made a 4-of-a-kind.

    That correct?

  • breaking the wall:

Dealer (aka East) rolls dice again... starting from his/her position as 1, counts counterclockwise the number rolled to determine which player's wall will break. The player who's wall will break counts the same number (rolled by east)starting from his/her r/h side of the wall.

The wall breaks at the point where that counted number is reached and those tiles are pushed slightly to the right -hence breaking the wall.

  • Those pushed tiles are the dead tiles and players will only access those tiles if they collect Flower tiles, Season tiles or when they reach Kong(4-of-a-kind) situations throughout play.

The round ends when there are only 14 tiles or 7 rows left on the wall(aka the dead wall).

  • Very informative, I actually learned alot. Thanks!

  • yep yep, mahjong has its complications. I have some videos too, take a look ;)

  • Good explanation overall but mahjong is more complicated, the scoring is something you have to play and play to get use to and there are variants. I will not comment on the clip as I find it good enough to start playing. Something extra to add: East 1st, South 2nd West 3rd North 4th. 4 of a kind you take a tile from the reverse end of the wall and discard one card. Each will have 13 tiles at their hand and you must have 14 to get mahjong(card you drew or someone discards (for mahjong)

    5 stars

  • uh, yes he did do the wind of the round marker...pretty much at the beginning.

  • Yes but he didn't go over what the marker was for. He also didn't go over how to break the wall, how to end the game and what the penalties are for certain things like calling mahjong when you really don't.

  • When you make an instructional video, you have to make decisions as to what is important to cover. My goal with my videos is to help someone decide if they want to get the game and to know enough to get started. All of these are minor details that will serve to confuse someone who knows nothing about the game, so I decided not to include them.

  • It was because of this video that I learned most about mahjong and purchased a game myself. I hope to learn even more with he next video.

  • I love this but you never got ino the wind of the round marker.

  • Thank you, Scott. This really helped me fall in love with the game of mahjong.

  • awesome

  • good

  • 你好! 谢谢你教我们麻将!

Hello! Thanks for teaching mah jong in English. A very generous video. Best wishes!

  • what is the name of the song at the beginning?

    btw great vid!!!!

  • Awesome! I have been playing Mahjong Solitaire on my old Paschal system, and I have been wondering how to play the real version. Pretty does anyone know how much one of these sets might cost? Or where to buy one (not in Beijing)?

  • I got a set on ebay, not much money, fun!

  • I paid $49.00 for my deluxe set at barn & noble. I usually see it thier, around the hoildays. Also check any oriental import store in big cities!

  • iam srry but u forgot one thing theres also called a straight just like cards its call ascalera

  • you're right. it's called "順子" in Chinese.

  • lol how u no that lol that look tight as writting lol i no

  • thanks a lot, i learned how to play in 23 mins

  • nice video!

I did notice one inconsistency though: you recommend putting the discards in front of you, lined up so everyone knows what everyone discarded (which hasn't been done in any games I've seen). But you also say that the element of the game you don't like is people holding back tiles to force a draw.

Doesn't lining up the tiles in front of you encourage that kind of play that you don't like though?

  • it would be good if someone makes a combination video like forming 13yiu( 13 wonders )or dasanyuan ( pong of 3 colour dragons )for example

  • HK Mahjong > JPN Mahjong & US Mahjong

  • You have it all backwards... Yaku-Jong >>> HK & US Mahjong.

  • Great video, as usual.

It'd be great if you could make another video where you show a couple of variants.

Speaking of Asian games, there's a fantastic Japanese chess variant calles Shogi, I think you should make a video of that.

  • What's with that weird Haku tile? O_O

  • haha.. mine mine mine..

  • american style mahjong sucks ass

  • 100% agreed to the fullest extent.

  • Great video, very helpfull and keep up the good work!

  • Great Video! Now I Can Better Understand Akagi and even play Mah Jong!

  • im chinese and i already know the scoring systems and all the possible special hands etc etc. but he also missed one thing. when u already have 3 of a kind and u draw the 4th one urself, u turn all of them upside down without revealing it. get 2 of those and its 10 points.

  • MINE MINE MINE!

    Just say Pong -.- zzz.

  • Pretty good tutorial. I'm partial to Riichi (Reach) Mahjong myself.

  • I have been playing mahjong for 10 years, and I also don't know about the point system you just desribed, but sounds like jap mahjong to me.

    Mahjong has too many variants...

Most variant has 13 tiles, some has 16.

    Calling for sequence is "Chi"

Calling for 3 of a kind is "Pong"

Calling for 4 of a kind is "Kang", just like Akagi.

American mahjong is very weird for me though.

  • In Akagi (Japanese modern mahjong) it was Chi, Pon, and Kan.

  • you have to have 16 cards

    not fourteen

  • Varies from ruleset to ruleset

  • In some versions that is.

  • 多四白张就是宝贝

  • Japanese rules are the most fun ones

  • is there a website where i can download mahjong?

not the solitaire version, but i want the one he's referring to in this video.

thank you if you can help me.

  • Google Nine Dragons Software. They have Mahjong, Chinese rules for human player vs. a choice of three out of eight computer players.

  • 怎么美国的麻将多出4张白板呀??
