@GenyaArikado Don't forget that Waldner was playing with 38mm ball and hidden serves back then which is much harder to play. He already beaten Ma Lin and Timo Boll which is in the Top 5 in the world rankings today. Not bad for Old Waldner...:)
@quickzilver333 Yeah, i know. I've seen so many matches already i'm going ping-pong craaazy ^^ ! But how big is the ball today and yeah i know he beat Ma Lin and Timo Boll. However both of them are so much better today. Timo was defeated by Ma Lin recently 3-0 in set. Ma Lin played veeeery good. Ma Long is world nr 1 and is unbreakable. Zhang Jike is second and fast as lightning. Xu Xin and Wang Hao are also unbelievably good right now. *D !
@quickzilver333 I think Waldner is very good for his age today. He still shows us magic from the screen. And his forehand smash and control are still fantastic ! However i think the chinese and Timo have more amazing footwork which is essential in ping pong nowadays. The konkurrense "competition" is veeery high as of 2012 :) as for the olympics too !
Big upset even tho Huang is is a formidable opponent, An even bigger sensation happend in the group matches when the 95 world champion Kong Linghui lost to the brazilian player Claudio Cano
@Galimah Actually Claudio Kano died in a motorcycle accident in Sao Paulo just days before the 1996 Olympics. Its too bad he never made it. He was only 30.
Waldner should be in good shape who won 3 titles in Euro championship before Olympic games. But, his finger (thumb) was hurt. This affected his spin of the service and in turn 3rd ball attack. In the matches, Once the rally was formed, Johnny was in advantage.
No spin for Waldi to work with. Also just back from an extended pause after injuring (breaking?) his ankle from tripping and falling at a bar, or so I've heard.
the top players are so much better today

@olaniyi570 Waldner's ankle was hurt in 2003 before Paris WTTC.

Johnny Huang appears to be so pumped up here and look at the spring in his young legs. The older Huang was more sedate and less expressive.
