Maybe in the UK. You've got a lot of options we don't here in the US. Over here the only comparable mileage would be a Golf TDI which I did consider but it's a different car. I've got an 04 Prius now and love it.
You would be better off with a Ford Focus or Mondeo diesel turbo. 50MPG in the town and 70+MPG at 70MPH on a motorway. The focus is 1600cc and the Mondeo 1800 or 2000cc and both manual gearboxes. No one buys the Prius in the UK as they are LESS ECONOMICAL than a lot of petrol and diesel cars. They weigh a lot, are slow, cost a lot more to service, cost more to insure and are terrible on fuel. You could buy a Focus AND Mondeo for the cost of a Prius. The Prius is 20 years behind the times now.
My 2003 Prius does this on occasion upon startup. I have had no issues with the operation or handling of the car. Not sure what it is. 260, 000 miles and doing just fine.
toyota is not building cars too last anymore, thier only worried about profit, the jap economy is in trouble and toyota quality is going too hell with it
I've since traded this one in for a 2G model, but with the crappy tires on my 2G they're both about the same. I Have to drive up and down hills to work every day(about 600-800') and I usually get around 45mpg. Might be more towards 40mpg with snow tires in winter, plowing through snow, and I currently have about 50mpg showing after a couple hundred miles this weekend without as much of the hills.
What is the real world mileage you are getting with your car, not the mileage on the window sticker, but the MPG you are getting on average with this car?
I've got about 150K miles on mine at the moment. I'm not too worried about the battery pack. Shouldn't be too big a deal and I'd probably just find a used one depending on the $2Kish new price... Personally I think the tranny(with motor/generators inside) is the bigger worry...
@omgsean1 Depends on how you want to define it. There is no tranny in the traditional sense. Just a planetary diff with the engine and a couple motor/generators along with the driveaxles connected...
A toyota dealer near me has like 5 of the classic prius cars. I really want one. My only problem is that a lot of them have 100,000 miles or over so Im worried about the battery pack. I'll have to see if it's been replaced or that its covered under a waranty. Either way I still want one.

buy a real vehicle, they dont do that....
JeepinErik 2 years ago
I'm going to guess that a "real" vehicle also isn't as enjoyable, nor will it get 50mpg...

@levismith76 you call the prius enjoyable? haha puttering along the road. and it's UGLY. Seeing a Prius die right off the lot made my day.

Sounds like the ABS system testing itself. Try putting your foot on the brake pedal. If it's vibrating, then it's just your ABS.
mgospeed31 3 years ago
Nope, definitively engine related. However, it never caused a problem, went away come spring and didn't return at all last winter.
