I have worked on computers for 18 years and I can tell you that any system needs more then 200W power supply. Other then that you put 4 gigs of ram in it so you should be good w windows 7. It should really run with something older like XP. Cheers Rickem. Klo
If you want to stay in the super value segment I'd probably go with a system based around the AMD A8-3850 Llano, esp. if you're editing video and like the occasional video game. Re: psus; Stability and quality are what you need, most cheap, high wattage psus are garbage. There's a few psu calcs online that let you plug in your specs and will tell you exactly what you need. Good luck and have fun.
@RedneckRickem, when you do this will you make a video of it so dumbass's like myself can understand how to do it? I have had my pc for 6 years now, no problems with it, would like for it to be faster but I can make due for now.
If you look at Newegg dot com then you can get a Foxconn SFF R50-A1 AMD E-350 APU for $130 plus shipping including cabinet, power supply the work and it's all assembled. It even has HDMI. Looks like you only have to put a hard drive and RAM into it, but SATA drives are cheap and the DDR3 240 pin 1066 or 1333 are dirt cheap. Just start out with one 4GB module that's plenty and later on you can always buy 4 GB more to put in if you need it.
200w if fine for the e350 guys, its like a 15w processor. Everything else is like 20 -30w, well withing its capabilities. Gigabyte is the best brand board, in that I mean, weather its a $40 board or a $300 board they are solid, no difference in quality unlike other brands like asus, there is noticeable reduction in quality as you move down into budget boards.
200 watt power supply is shit get yourself a 500 watt or above. You want a good motherboard get a ASUS with an AMD cpu I had a gigabyte it was crap It crashed and burned after about a month of use that and it only has 2 RAM slots which is crap. Besides that The case looks good just make sure it has room to breathe and good ventilation I prefer the full towers because it has room to cool the parts so they don't over heat. I currently have 10 fans in mine.
@ThePatriotsfan01 asus is one of the best but so is gigabyte i havent heard of anyone having problems and i have been using asus and gigabyte as my mobos for many years and they both have about the same reliability(none have let me down)and both function very well..and gigabytes cheap boards work very well for lowend computers and asus doesnt make good cheap boards..but when you go into the high end spectrum they both are about the same
@tical909 quit bullshitting! he's using an AMD E350 platform which is an extremely efficient system! he's not using a high end GPU nor a soundcard! thus wouldn't take any higher than 100w! HTPC are not a gaming machines!
Hey Rick, i'm poor than shit, and made a brand new computer, for about 350€, no hard disk, cause i had an external one of 1tb of mem. The board is an ASUS, the processor is a dual core AMD, dual channel 2x2gb ram kingston and a pretty nice video card ATI radeon 5400HD and the case. I'm pretty good about the results, just asked the seller which board and processor i wanted, and there i have it! it works like hell! go to your local PC store and ask for the parts, and DIY, it's cheaper than hell!
Might do.. go for some Patriot ram if you can, but remember that CPU is not really a number cruncher, more like the AMD Desktop version of an Atom CPU. You CAN stab a nice GPU in it.. I worry about cooling in that case though, that PSU is going to be CHEAP quality, and run HOT. Hell, that ITX board WILL fit in your ATX case, it just uses the top four left holes. Best of luck, msg me if ya got any more questions mate, this is what I do every day.. :D
If I were you rick I would get a bigger power supply. if you decide in the future to get a video card those things take some power! But for now I think that set up should work.

@emmettrocks2 Yeah I mostly agree with you on that one. I built a PC back in 2000 and I had to replace the entire motherboard and other components on it in 2004. It's now my parent's junky computer but it's still going strong, slow but strong. Running Windows XP Professional BTW.
Depends who builds the computer, in the last ten years I've had 3 gaming computers (from scratch) and they all still work flawlessly! Also I built well over 500 computers for other people and have had very few come back (only for hard drives or power supplies). I guess if you build crap computers they die faster!
@emmettrocks2 i cant agree on that idk what type of things you make but i have been making pc for 10+ years and they have come to be much more reliable then brand computer ands cheaper..my last build cost me 1500 and yes of course if you go and spend 150 on a pc its not guaranteed to last..but i accually made a pc like that 2 years ago and its still running strong and not too slow for browsing..
Why does everyone tell rick to get a job? I haven't had one for 2 years, and don't plan on getting one any time soon.. Is it 100% necessary to have a job? Im doing just fine without one. To everyone telling him he needs a better PSU: This system will use maybe 120w from the wall at load. As long as its an ok OEM (most PSU's are rebadged these days) then he will be fine.
Laptop pulls air in from the keyboard and pushes it out the back or side generally with squirrel cage miniature cpu fans ..... running it with the lid closed will make it run hotter and windows will dump loads (or blue screen) in response to heat.
@scottyfixit Never seen a laptop do that in my life as they all have sealed keyboards to (try) and keep spills from entering the main case. Most have a vents underneath where the air is drawn in, or vents on side and back with one set for in and one for out.
I had a Gigabyte GA-7DX a long time ago & loved it but since then I've been buying MSI boards. 1th3n is right though, a 200w power supply is on the low end. You'll need more power or at least a plan to replace the 200w when it toasts itself.
@savagedias asus and gigabyte are much better than msi even though msi has been getting decent reviews lately like 3 out of 5 stars while gigabyte and asus get 4.5 to 5.0 stars..i wouldnt go with msi
@solarlightning I was happy with my Gigabyte & both of the MSI mobos & graphic cards I've used. The Asus tuner card I had was very disappointing but I think that had more to do with the software that shipped with than anything else.
I wouldn't get a 200w power supply Id atleast get a 500w then that will run everything you need for now definatly and then down the road you will still should have lots. And make sure you get DDR3 Ram
Thermaltake Makes Great Case's I have There Armor JR Case. And Love it. Im not sure i would go with a Mini Case for your build. And 200watt Power-supply is not ALOT! Check Around Bet you can find a Better Deal Than That!
Go into your pc programs file and remove any programs you dont need, i found some that were'nt suppose to be in there as big as 132gb. Then remove any videos, photos, pdf's you dont need to get your speed back. Files you want to save can be stored on portable 4gb memory sticks.
just wondering how you can afford a new computer with money from stealing scrap metal and car radios? also just another thought, how about you buy your kids a new computer since you seemingly do absolutley nothing for them. just advice from a hardworking american to a skeezy canadian deadbeat.
Forget what you are thinking of doing...just take that laptop and defrag it, get rid of third party cookies, clean up your registry and delete all the porn links on it and it will run like its brand new.+
200watt power supply is pretty shitty especially if your going to run a video card , which you should for editing, onboard video sucks asshole i know cause im using one and it was garbage untill i put a video card in
I dislike Dell because I've only ever had bad experiences with them. Not in terms of processing or software issues, but with hardware and build quality. I do like their notebooks though. In contrast, I like HP despite what a lot of people say about them lately. They're not the most well-built but when you take care of them they actually do last.
@Matthew55904 I hate reading advice from people that dont know what their talking about! Dell's ARE NOT bad computers! I'm currently using a Dell 1501 laptop from 2006 with a AMD turion64 processor. I can play newer video games, watch movies, download, upload, edit...I can even still do alot of that at the same time. If you wanna buy crap Buy an HP they've literally gone to shit! Why do you think dells have contracts with so many schools? Cus their built well. Windows 7 is great....
@garretts91 i have a DELL Optiplex GX260 it was fine on speed but the motherboard is shot i have WORKED on a XPS M1530 laptop which died after 2 years only work i did to it was reload the OS ive worked on a Optiplex GX270 which works but was a BITCH to install a system on. DELLs ARE bad computers from my experince having and using them!!
@garretts91 i can have my customers who have DELL back me up on how problemadic they are the prefrom good assuming the hardware lasts because ANY hardware related problem with any dell is a BITCH to fix and expencive a dell has a failure its cheaper to buy a new computer
@Matthew55904 you just dont know how to do preventative maintenance. You probably the type to save crap everywhere making your computers slow! Ive never had A SINGLE issue with my dell. Granted it came with vista back on 96 and i currently have XP.. That's only because Vista is horrible. It handled all the driver rollbacks and installs like a champ! Dont give out crap advice. How would you know what brands are crap if you cant even maintain a computer?
@garretts91 i am a computer tech i have worked on dells both desktops AND laptops so i know how long they last how fast they go they work BEST with Ubuntu or Windows 2000 anything else makes them a real test or patience
Hey rick, maybe try looking at the AMD A series apus? those will have a bit more power I guess you could say, yet at the low end I think they draw 65w.
Also just in case if you change your mind on power supply, avoid these brands because these are bad quality power supplies and if they breakdown. These power supplies can destroy your whole computer electronics:
200w power supply doesnt enough, get a minimum of 350w power supply. I recommend 400-450w power supply, it will be easily enough. Dont worry about power consumption, even if you have a 1kilowatt power supply, it wont take any more power than what your computer requires to work properly. Having little bit of excessive power doesnt hurt anything, in fact a bit excessively powerfull power supply lasts longer than power supply with minimum required amount of watts.
If you're going to edit videos on it, compare that E-350 against an H61 motherboard paired with a Sandy Bridge Pentium. They're the best performers for the price right now in CPU power (which you need for encoding), but fall behind AMD's APUs in graphics performance. A G850 is basically a cheaper i3 2100 without hyperthreading.
Unfortunately hard drive prices still haven't recovered from the floods... If you go with a laptop drive make sure it's 7200 RPM or it's going to be dog-slow!
I got an e-350 laptop, basic web browsing or games made before very early 2010 is all it can handle. honest to goodness my p4 desktop at 3.30ghz is way faster with the same amount of ram. both have 4gb ram but the lappy has 1.5gb vid card. get at least quad core. the future is coming. also, 500w ps MIN!!!
85W of power + 4gb of ram isnt going to be more then 200 watts lay off the acid people

u can get a cheaper motherboard for intel for like 50-60 Bucks

I had a Gigabyte GA-7DX a long time ago & loved it but since then I've been buying MSI boards. 1th3n is right though, a 200w power supply is on the low end. You'll need more power or at least a plan to replace the 200w when it toasts itself.

MrPuch78 3 weeks ago
@savagedias asus and gigabyte are much better than msi even though msi has been getting decent reviews lately like 3 out of 5 stars while gigabyte and asus get 4.5 to 5.0 stars..i wouldnt go with msi
solarlightning 2 weeks ago
@solarlightning I was happy with my Gigabyte & both of the MSI mobos & graphic cards I've used. The Asus tuner card I had was very disappointing but I think that had more to do with the software that shipped with than anything else.

Need to learn your math, your board was 127, case was 74 plus a couple of sticks. Chucking out 250 for another computer? Must have gotten a job.

I dislike Dell because I've only ever had bad experiences with them. Not in terms of processing or software issues, but with hardware and build quality. I do like their notebooks though. In contrast, I like HP despite what a lot of people say about them lately. They're not the most well-built but when you take care of them they actually do last.
markkjay 3 weeks ago
2 reasons you laptops is sluggish 1 its DELL those are ALWAYS Slow and 2 its running Windows 7
Matthew55904 3 weeks ago

Matthew55904 3 weeks ago
@garretts91 i can have my customers who have DELL back me up on how problemadic they are the prefrom good assuming the hardware lasts because ANY hardware related problem with any dell is a BITCH to fix and expencive a dell has a failure its cheaper to buy a new computer
Matthew55904 3 weeks ago
@Matthew55904 you just dont know how to do preventative maintenance. You probably the type to save crap everywhere making your computers slow! Ive never had A SINGLE issue with my dell. Granted it came with vista back on 96 and i currently have XP.. That's only because Vista is horrible. It handled all the driver rollbacks and installs like a champ! Dont give out crap advice. How would you know what brands are crap if you cant even maintain a computer?
garretts91 3 weeks ago
@garretts91 i am a computer tech i have worked on dells both desktops AND laptops so i know how long they last how fast they go they work BEST with Ubuntu or Windows 2000 anything else makes them a real test or patience

Matthew55904 3 weeks ago
Hey rick, maybe try looking at the AMD A series apus? those will have a bit more power I guess you could say, yet at the low end I think they draw 65w.

Also just in case if you change your mind on power supply, avoid these brands because these are bad quality power supplies and if they breakdown. These power supplies can destroy your whole computer electronics:
"Codegen, Q-Tec, Macron, Colors-IT, Deer, Micro-One, KME, LC Power, SilverShield, Bestec, Xilence, Altis, Huntkey, AXP/Xion, Ace."
Bikeman1087 3 weeks ago
@Bikeman1087 most OEM builds have Bestec i have never had any problems with them
Matthew55904 3 weeks ago
You need 4 gigs of ram otherwise it sounds ok.
99minerkc 3 weeks ago
@99minerkc Oh yeah, I agree with the power supply of 200 W being on the low end. I would get an antec or a brand as good as antec and do 450w
99minerkc 3 weeks ago
it is OK but would get the gt 210 for the video mackeing mate i had one the card is not that bad and they are onley $30 to $40
MrCallaghan900 3 weeks ago
200w power supply doesnt enough, get a minimum of 350w power supply. I recommend 400-450w power supply, it will be easily enough. Dont worry about power consumption, even if you have a 1kilowatt power supply, it wont take any more power than what your computer requires to work properly. Having little bit of excessive power doesnt hurt anything, in fact a bit excessively powerfull power supply lasts longer than power supply with minimum required amount of watts.
Bikeman1087 3 weeks ago
@Bikeman1087 If it's a good 200Watt-PSU it might be even perform better than a crappy 400Watt-PSU.
For that system a 200Watt-PSU is more than enough.
tekknobanane 3 weeks ago
@Bikeman1087 most OEM computers have 200W PSUs they never had problems powering a Video Card requiring a 450w PSU
Matthew55904 3 weeks ago

HawtStuff686 3 weeks ago
If you're going to edit videos on it, compare that E-350 against an H61 motherboard paired with a Sandy Bridge Pentium. They're the best performers for the price right now in CPU power (which you need for encoding), but fall behind AMD's APUs in graphics performance. A G850 is basically a cheaper i3 2100 without hyperthreading.
Unfortunately hard drive prices still haven't recovered from the floods... If you go with a laptop drive make sure it's 7200 RPM or it's going to be dog-slow!
