This is a Khmer dance that was inspired by the Kola people, choreographed by the Royal University of Fine Arts.
It's a snippet from a story about how this princess fell in love with the male peacock. The King, wanting to make his daughter happy announced that who ever can catch the male peacock will get to marry his daughter, as the peacock had magical powers. Many tried and failed until a hunter came along. He conjured up a female peacock to seduce the male peacock.
This is what you are seeing now. In the end the female peacock disappeared and the male peacock was caught. The hunter presented the peacock to the King. But when the daughter saw that the peacock was depress she let him go knowing their beauty only lies in their natural habitat. And the hunter soon wed the King's daughter.
Ok so I stand corrected. This dance was originally from Kola-Khmer but this version is the updated/newly choreographed version that the Royal University of Fine Arts had come up with the Kola people. The chanting of the Kola language is kept in its original entirely.
This is not a Khmer dance, its a Kola Dance. The Kola people are an ethnic minority of Cambodia who mainly reside in Pailin as stone and gem miners. Their clothes and music isn't Khmer either.
That's because the Kola are ethnic Shans from Burma who are minorities of Cambodia. I don't know why we call them Kola, but they are Shan (Tai Yai). Their architecture looks very similar to Burmese style.
I should of known that it wasn't a Khmer dance lol... I've done all my researching now since that comment I posted was a year ago lol but thanks for correcting my errors though.
wow... finally, an intelligent discussion on youtube. I had no idea that there was a Shan/Tai Yai minority in Cambodia and that they're called Kola there. I also did some research and found that Pailin is located in Battam Borng which is right by the Thai border. In Thailand, the peacock dance is from the North which is very closely related to the Shan. Also, the Dai minority in Southern China also have a peacock dance.
I think there is an indigenous Khmer Peacock dance that has a tall headdress adorned with Peacock feather. This dance is called the "Pailin Peacock dance" kngoak Pailin. I'm not so sure what the other peacock dance is called.
???!!! Sorry, I can't get any of this, music or dance...

They look (both clothes and music) more like the Shans(Tai) in Burma. That type of drum is called ohzi in Burma.
