The only way we could subvert those in power would be to stop using money and return to a barter economy.

An economy based on barter is not practical, by any means. But we could use it a lot more frequently, and in fact, people are. One scheme is labor co-ops, where people create a sort of 'bank account' of hours they have worked helping other members, and can draw on that account when they themselves need help getting something done.
