Dwight, you are the man. I've watched all the "fun with midi" stuff and they are just brilliant. Very well structured & easy to follow, and so much better than anything else I've seen. I'm only just learning Sonar, so it was slightly disconcerting, to hear you say you'd only scratched the surface in the tutorials. Where does that leave me? in your shadow, I guess. Still, Rome wasn't built in a day & patience is a virtue. Thank you, & keep up the great work Dwight. Rob (UK)
During this project I only had the onboard soundcard but I was using the TTS-1 Softsynth which came in Sonar 4 ( all the sounds you are hearing are from TTS-1 )
Nowadays I am using Sonar 7 with the M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI card. And I also have a JV1010 :)
But I still use TTS-1 a lot. I like the sounds and ease of use.
You've done a marvelous job of sequencing this song in Sonar. I'm a huge Steely Dan fan and perform myself as a solo act (guitar, keys). I do all my own backup via Sonar also. It's a fantastic program and you are a master at it! Kudos Kudos Kudos to you!!
hi dusty..how did you synchronize the tempo of janie runaway audio to the tempo of the midi track?, it falls so close to every measure. i can't get that..thanks!
The tempo of this song is 106 BPM and it never varies. Its obvious they recorded it along with a click track. But for more help on matching tempos, see my video about tempo adjustments. Also see more detail in the video called "dids backup band - The Way I Am"
Hello I was wondering if you could help me. I am new to sonar and fruityloops. I would like to know how to import sounds from a cd into sonar so I can import the sounds into fruityloops. Thanks for your help in advance.
first you must convert the CD songs (or sounds) into MP3 or wav format etc. You can do that using Windows Media Player - Then Sonar can handle it - good luck - have fun !
Thanks man your the best. I learned something. Actually Im frustrated on how to use sonar but when I watched your video Im encouraged to learn it. Please continue uploading more tutorial video. Thanks and more power to you.
Hey Dusty...thanks for the nice comment you left me. I'm a huge Steely Dan fan! You have really mastered this MIDI thing...I thought my computer had freaked out and opened SONAR when I clicked on your channel :-)
So I guess you heard about Michael Brecker....what a shame. I gotta get busy meeting some of my idols before they all meet eternity! Peace :-)
hey there, all videos been very intresting and fun, cool to watch how its all done, like to check it out myself sometime. What software do you use? sonor? where can i get this etc?
Thanks for your kind comment. I'm glad you're enjoying these.
Your local music store should have Cakewalk products. I am using (Cakewalk) Sonar version 4 here but they have 5 and 6 out now too. There are also several other alternatives such as Cubase or Protools.
I am very impressed, dusty, by your videos (5 so far) dealing with "Janie Runaway" and turning it into a MIDI version. I love Steely Dan, and you clearly have a great amount of knowledge not only on the guys from the band, but on how to best put their song into a MIDI. The video is clear, informative, and unendingly fascinating to a computer-challenged music freak like I am. Great song choice, and great videos! Again, I am terribly impressed.
wow, this became way more than I was expecting. Great midi tutorial!

Curious if you use an internal sound card or an external tone module. I use an ETM, a Roland JV1010. Again, great job.

hi dusty, thanks for the video. do you think fruity loop studio can be used to achieve what you have just shown?
1murchunga 4 years ago
hmmmm - I'm not familiar with "fruity loop studio" but I bet it can - if it is a "'multi track MIDI sequencer'.
Its awesome what you can do with todays software when you dig in and have fun.
