  • The bigger the government the smaller the citizen. The bigger the citizen the smaller the government. The more government can run your life the more government will run your life. The more you are left to manage your own affairs the better off you are and the better off the very poor are. When no one else is taking care of the poor, you and I recognize our responsibility to lend a helping hand and the more accountable to the giving hand the recipient will and must be.

  • Typical Reagan conservative dumbass rhetoric.

Stossel shouldn't have these non-libertarians on who end up ruining the name of Stossel.

  • So by extrapolation, Grover feels I can grow and use marijuana and not pay taxes to fund anything more than a standing defensive army? And certainly not fund the retirement and health care of members of congress, when I have none myself? Good.

  • How about making it law that the debt ceiling increases have to be voted on by the people? Then we immediately vote it down to about 5 trillion dollars.

  • Govt' is extremely important they standardize currency, handle issues that require a third party, protect the country from foreign threat, run the courts, and enforce the law. Authority needs to run those functions not private companies. That is all Govt' should do though since they are very incompetent about most things. That is why Milton Friedman's Idea of Libertarianism is The best for Govt' and Eco systems.

  • @nagasnharpes completely agree. Government is very necessary. Just at a very limited state.

  • DROWN IT!!

  • "Small government" is a logical fallacy:

"We need a group of people to steal from us so that they can protect us from being stolen from."

  • I wish this guy would win. But I doubt it could possibly happen. A lot of people with their jobs don't have time to learn about the problems of big government. Instead of doing research they will flip on the TV after work and watch the big government advocate news organisations. America is truly kaput. You would think electing a republican congress would stop the big spending. Well it has done nothing. Its over. There is nothing Americans can do except take their guns and take back the country

  • Roads, military, expansion, and justice. Thats the governments only jobs and roads is debatable.

  • He calls himself a Ronald Reagan conservative, yet he supports small government? That is completely insane...

  • How can one have faith in big government without faith in his fellow man. The answer is what is freedom, not only in the sense of individualism but in that seed a birth of one who is free from the actions and faults of another can prosper and fail on his own. Otherwise big government is a nanny and attempts to right wrongs which it has no business in. And in that story ends freedom and begins control. I don't know if that is the facts but it is what my fellow Americans have done to me.

  • "The cornerstone of Socialism is mandatory labor with death as the final penalty" -Bernard Shaw

A SLAVE SYSTEM! All of the major "ism" movements were created and are funded by the same group (the AshkeNAZI). Socialism, Communism, Zionism, Marxism, Anarchism, Feminism, and so on... It's very easy to prove this, just go study for example who Karl Marx (father was a Rabbi), or Moses Hess were. Hess claimed to be a; "Socialist, Zionist, and Communist" all at once...

  • "The threat is now that we end up somewhere between France and Greece?"

No. Norquist is the threat - or rather, the simple-minded destructive political ideology he promotes.

  • @VeryEvilPettingZoo Freedom is a simple concept.

  • @Felhaven

Simple-minded people need - demand - simple arguments using simple concepts. The problem is that the real world is a damn complicated place.

  • @VeryEvilPettingZoo People are simple, the emergant phenomina isn't. Better to govern the people and allow the world to worry about itsself.

  • How about this. We go back to allowing the state governments select the state senators. That single act of puting them up to popular election is what undid us. The states are suppose to check the power of the federal gov. As of 2011 a state is little more than a glorified county.

  • @Felhaven Your wrong about how much influence that would have. Both parties in the US are national parties, there are no state parties at all. The state politicians are only there to serve the national party, and look at being elected to the state as putting in time to go onto national politics.

The root of the problem is that Americans don't care that their governemnt doesn't follow the rules it creates. If Americans weren't so dumbed down and ignorant things would be a lot better.

  • @Hashishin13 You are right that they ARE state parties. Originaly the senate was created to represent the government of each state. The house was to represent the population. Now they are redundant. Allowing the states reprsentation in the federal government would create a check against its power.

  • Mr. Stossel. You cannot starve the beast unless you stop feeding it, whether the borrow or not eventually if you stop feeding it, it defaults.

  • "We have to have 3 different defenses:

Stop them from taking our money,

Stop them from spending too much of it,

    Stop them regulating

    Great system we have here...

  • I am all for 2ond Amendment rights, but I am pondering something here which really concerns me. Is anyone else getting the impression that this government WANTS US to have a civil war (lots of guns) or possibly a revolution? It's the same feeling I had during Clintons reign when they murdered American citizens at WACO & Ruby Ridge, then the Oklahoma thing. Communist Freemasons are famous for starting revolutions so just be VERY AWARE of who is, "leading you along" and who is FUNDING THEM ON TOP!

  • @rross27 The american government, including the constitution and that 2nd amendment you talk about were all the result of Freemason's starting a revolution and a country, the USA.

Its far from perfect, always has been, but we could do much worse then a revolution back to constitutional government. I agree that we should be cautious though, they seem to have turned away from freedom since the founding.

  • @Hashishin13 Yes, in fact George Washington himself warned of, "illuminized Freemasonry", even as a Mason himself. And we should not forget that there was a very powerful, "Anti-Masonry Party" which nearly destroyed all illuminzed Freemasonry (Satan Worship) in this country. I believe our founding fathers came here as Freemasons, and some were only slowly becoming aware of what they were really involved in. Most Blue Lodge Masons have no idea what they are getting involved in to this day.

  • The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting furred and feathered critters. It's about hunting men.

  • I agree all forms of Big Government are a threat Individual Liberty. Whether its a socialist, authoritarian or military form of Big Government.

  • I've quoted it before and I'll quote it again, "Paul Krugman is a flat out asshole...and he's not even a real economist." Thank you Pat Caddell for those wonderful words.

  • This guy, while completely well intentioned and principled, is living the minarchist fantasy. A federal republic is inherently designed to grow out of control. Politicians milk what they can in what short time they have to be securely in office to get votes. It's a moral hazard.

  • I'll keep my eye on this guy.

  • Historically, for every tax increase the US gov has implemented the spending side of the equation has risen by $1.2 for every $1 in new taxes.

  • I simply can't stand G.N. Although I agree with much of what he has to say, his supercilious personality grates on my nerves.

  • Worry not, I will leave you alone...the rest of us can find a way to work together as a society. You don't want government run medical services, cool. You want to carry a firearm, awesome, I have never needed one nor foresee a reason why I would need to conceal one but that is just me. Don't want to send your beloved children to schools, awesome, I don't want them there either, you deal with keeping their attention through an entire lesson, should be interesting...real interesting...

  • @devilishlysilly We don't care what you think, just leave us alone. Take your tax collectors with you as well.

  • @devilishlysilly

It's a good bet this creature is so closed-minded it would be afraid to know any home schoolers.

And leaving us along means "Liberal"(commies) don't vote(the most violent act there is) to shove a govt. gun in our faces and demand we go along with their communism.

Don't understand? Follow my links. Read the quotes page first.

  • I wish he would have asked about him about the War on drugs and 4th amendment

  • great vid

  • Anarcho-Capitalism is the only way to go.

Government is a thing of the past. With instant communications there is no more need for Government.

Government only ruins every thing it touches, Not 1 thing is done better by Government.

Health care, Schools and Insurance are all Government involved and have sky rocketing costs

Lasic Eye surgery, Computers and Cell Phones are all better than ever, have no Government involvement and prices are falling. In fact they're cheaper and better than ever before

  • @americanbandwidth Many people of Jewish origin, such as Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Martin Buber, Murray Bookchin, Noam Chomsky, Murray Rothbard or David D. Friedman have played a role in the history of anarchism. However, as well as these individual anarchists of Jewish origin, there have also been specifically Jewish anarchist movements, within the Yiddish-speaking communities of Eastern and Central Europe, and the Western cities to which they migrated. See: "Jewish Anarchism"...

  • @americanbandwidth you have the right approach. There simply isn't enough of us though. . .

  • @americanbandwidth No, government is a necessary evil, although evil, but unfortunately necessary, Without it who will punish people for violating other people's property, who will provide goods that private market are unable to provide, who will provide national defense from foreign invaders.

  • @americanbandwidth There is no such thing as 'anarcho-capitalism,' it's absurd. Capital is essential to Capitalism, and capital cannot exist without property rights. The enforcement of property rights is a fundamental role of government. Without government, we have no property rights, we have no capital, we have no economy. Lasic surgery, computers, cell phones; These things all would not have been invented without patent law, i.e. property rights. ~Limited Government~ is the answer.

  • @DOHC2L Just because it's the government's "fundamental role" to to enforce property rights does not mean that property rights cannot exist sans government. You must make a distinction between the rule of law and the societal mechanism that upholds it: The bridge and its suspension cables. The real question is whether a compulsorily funded monopoly is the only conceivable mechanism by which property rights can be upheld.

  • @asdblog "You must make a distinction between the rule of law and the societal mechanism that upholds it"

That's exactly what I did: "Capital is essential to Capitalism, and capital cannot exist without property rights. Without government, we have no property rights, we have no capital, we have no economy."

You didn't recognize the distinction I made, but it's undeniable I did. You're trying to bait me into an unreasonable question; explaining everything of a free-society to everything else...

  • @DOHC2L "Without government, we have no property rights"

Well, that's your opinion. It appears to be based upon a preference for the thought of Jean Jacques Rosseau over that of John Locke.

  • @DOHC2L And I disagree with the broad assertion that without government we could have no property rights...

  • @asdblog Then explain your reasoning please.

  • @DOHC2L Anybody with a gun is capable of doing what the police do. And I trust my neighbors and their guns to protect my property more than I trust the police to do so. Rights exist independently. They are not enabled by any external force, including the collective. Free people, when left alone, establish their own rules to follow; punishment for breaking these rules usually takes the form of social ostracism.

  • @asdblog Yes, but the problem is, ostracism or imprisonment leave the criminal alive. And a living criminal will either do it again, or sue the ones who stopped them.

    Not necessarily mutually exclusive!

If you like, I can PM you some links to proof, or you can just look up recidivism statistics, but those statistics are a lot drier than a few big incidents where a criminal that went through "Catch&Release" did it again, or when illegals sued a rancher who caught them poisoning his livestock...

  • @americanbandwidth Very well put. However, I happen to like the apathy and slower than a aging turtle service that I get when I go to a state or government run agency. Private sector businesses are too effecient and innovate way too much, and all their great service is just a cover up to stay in business. (The Liberal Mind)

  • @americanbandwidth I'm sorry to say this but, as a Capitalist I recognize the necessary evil of some government. Only as authorized by the constitution of the USA. You know protecting the rights of all individuals. And, national defense. Besides that I agree with you.

  • @atchisrj1 Unfortunately our system has given rise to politicians who use us and take our money away and then give it to others in order to buy votes.

  • @sechenry6 I wouldn't blame the system as much as the people remaining quite about it. As more and more Americans are waking up to the truth about the unconstitutional (illegal) acts of the government thing will change. At least I hope so.

  • if government is so bad, why dont you move to Somalia! They have no government there and its total anarchy

  • @KripDrip Libertarians are not anarchists.

If you think the government is so good, why don't you go live in North Korea?

It's the same strawman argument, in just reverse.

  • I'd argue that anarchists are libertarians, but not all libertarians are anarchists...

  • @KripDrip Somalia is not Capitalist.

I did my time there already, got to see it first hand.

Your Statement is based in ignorance and/or provocation.

If You love Government so much why aren't You living in Venezuela?

What I have to say has merit and educated people know the difference.

  • @KripDrip They have a government there moron they are just weak and criminals run the country. The government there are corrupt and let the criminals including pirates do whatever they want.

  • @Empyreanmight

Over the past 2 decades, Somalia generally has not had a government at all. Look it up.

  • @KripDrip Actually you have to look it up. Because the Somalian government is not non-existant it is full of corruption and refuses to do anything for its people. They allow criminals to run the show.

  • According to historical legend, the phrase stems from a meeting in about 1680 between the powerful French finance minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert and a group of French businessmen led by a certain M. Le Gendre. When the eager mercantilist minister asked how the French state could be of service to the merchants and help promote their commerce, Le Gendre replied simply "Laissez-nous faire" ("Leave us be", lit. "Let us do").

  • A reasonable man.

  • And here from the title, I was expecting Stossel to be in drag.

    Disappointed!

  • Leave us alone! :)

    Peace
