This configuration is sometimes termed a 180 degree V12 engine because like most other V engine layouts each pair of pistons share a crank pin. In a 180 degree V engine when one piston of a pair is at Top Dead Centre the other will be at BDC. In a boxer engine a pair of pistons will be on crank pins 180 degrees apart so that both pistons in a pair will be at TDC at the same time.
So in a 180 degree V12, each crank pin shares two pistons. A true boxer engine has only one piston per crank pin.
Actually, the 512 engine is a boxer, the term originally came from how the pistons "boxed" back and forth at each other, like two athletes in the ring.

the testarossa (512) has a flat 12, beautiful engine.

Flat, but not a boxer. It's a 180 degree V12.

yessir. Amazing engine.
DaFrenchman5O 3 years ago
waht makes it not a boxer. after all the predecessor to the testerossa was called the 512 BB (bb for berlinetta boxer).

once its a flat, how is it a v12 anymore. is it something to do with the split crankcase?

Just to make it clear again, it's a flat (aka 180°) V12, but not a boxer. Read the technical background below.
