  • I think it was not a devo, but a DOVE performance.

  • Shrivel up Bobby.

  • Shrivelling up into my fifties, this burst of fresh irony has re-hydrated me into spiritually-minded spudness.Let us Pray,Fellow Spuds!

  • I take shrivel up as a reference to how species in evolution will actually get smaller over time as resources dwindle. Also: Your DNA is programmed to kill you at a certain point. (Literally! That's the aging process.)

  • One of the most underrated bands of all time. They rock and are always intelligent and witty. They always speak the truth.

  • Get spiritual minded! Classic! Duty now spuds!

  • genius!!!!!!!!

  • THIS IS NOT DEVO!!! This is DOVE: The Band of Love! These 5 guys opened for Devo the Devil band all throughout the '79 "Duty Now" tour...Some people in the audience (in Berkeley, yet!) did not GET IT and actually Booed DOVE!!!

  • @ronquintana Shame on them! DOVE totally Rocks! ;-)

  • who the fuck is playing the guitar

  • does anyone here know what shrivel up is written about?, i have no idea

  • @1devo6587 It's about regression, de-evolution, things falling apart and, well, shriveling up!

  • @1devo6587 dying under daddies cap, say you go to college have everything paid for by your parents, but you dont do enough work. your just dying under daddies cap...so shrivel up in a little ball on the floor...you never get pissed, you have to pooty poot poot. think about this

  • I fell sooooooooo DEVOOOO!!!!

  • Praise you for the two Devo uploads !

  • Don't fight, guys. We're all Devo.

  • brilliant

  • Shrivel Up and Space Junk, most intelligent songs of all time

  • Devo IS ahead of its time.

  • Is this when they were posing as the band "DOVE"?

  • colmo siempre, buenosssssssssssssss

  • The bassline on Shrivel Up is the best ever!

  • This is the Devo I love

The Devo of today is a more polished organized watered down version. (just listen to the new album)

They used to be more edgy.

  • Backstage before this show at University of Minnesota field house, Mark Mothersbaugh wrote me an autograph caption: "The Lord carries a flesh covered sword." What a day. We did survive the Reagan era. Thanks to art.

  • @cmpleasant And G-D favored you on that day. Go and be blessed...as if you haven't been @UM.

  • I wish they would have developed this band more. Pioneers, I say!

  • DEVO are still the most amazing band I've ever seen live. Nothing comes close. They're all mental!

  • Mark Mothersbaugh is an underrated frontman.

  • @vaf88 hahahaha i live in Indiana and I agree! it's terrible!

  • Anyone have tech info on video equipment used on this video ? The quality is so good compared to other early Devo vids.

  • @jonel469 This B/W video was recorded on 3/4 inch tape on 9-22-1979 in Minneapolis. But it had deteriorated and was flaking when it was rediscovered. The video looks good because it was restored and enhanced by Rick Fuller and others in the early 2000s.

The footage is from "The M-80 Project," the first punk/new/no wave festival. It's supposed to be released on DVD soon by the MVD company.

  • leisure suites

  • After watching this, a few things become evident. Mark Mothersbaugh is the greatest front man of all time, and Devo are the most underrated band of all time.

And the bass line on Shrivel Up is ludicrously catchy.

    And Devo fucking rock.

  • David Byrne, while still a genius himself, stole most of his act from Mothersbaugh.

Devo never got the recognition they deserved, and thats fine, they stayed true to their music and still are one of the most energetic and crazy live shows out there.

Jerry Casale is one of the best bassist ever.

  • I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. David Byrne & Mark Mothersbaugh were simply both on a similar wavelength. This happens all the time. It's not plagiarism when 2 people tap into the same idea at once. Brian Eno was a common thread connecting the 2 and probably contributed to some of the similarities as well.

  • @FaxanaduJohn ............-Could not agree MORE!!! Underrated doesnt even begin to cover it! They pushed our boundaries and our buttons!

  • @FaxanaduJohn It's funny....I was listening to shrivel up before I came to this video and I was telling myself......This bass line is great....very catchy. Then I read this.

  • @FaxanaduJohn Praise Bob!

  • @FaxanaduJohn I love Devo, but this is reediculous. I mean, the Feelies and dBs sold 1% of them. Devo was not as popular as they should have been, but sold well, were on TV and radio

  • @spiderkiss Uh. You can't both "love Devo" and think "this is reediculous". This IS Devo. Devo is and has always been about mocking stupidity with stupidity. This video is Devo holding up the mirror to the Xtian revolution of the mid-late 70s, and showing the world just how sick, stupid, and dangerous it was and still is. So... how is that "reediculous" or however the hell you butrchered the spelling? Go listen to A Flock of Seagulls. Devo is over your head. Shrivel up.

  • @MongoLloydd responding to this: I love Devo, they're in my top 10. I was referring to this:

"It is evident. Mark Mothersbaugh is the greatest front man of all time, and Devo are the most underrated band of all time."

Many obviously intelligent and with-it people 'got' Devo, me being one of them. Many. Devo sold well, so the public is not as stupid as you think. I dont think they were 'underrated.' Yes, millions of idiots didnt like them, but who gives a crap about them? Or Mongolloyd?

  • @MongoLloydd You are shallow and bitter and angry. Guess you can't bring home the bacon

  • @spiderkiss dont fight... IT IS PROOF OF DEVOLUTION.. spuds fighting each other. wat has our world come to??!!

  • @MongoLloydd well said SPUD

  • you gotta pooty-pooh-pooh!

    you gotta pooty-pooh-pooh!

  • pretty sure this is bout jerkin it... god i love marks keyboard in the begining

  • shrivel up shows how amazing alan myers drumming is!

  • i always laugh at the DOVE clips that devo do,didn't they do this beacause the christians were criticizing them?

  • Ah man what a band. Shrivel up is Primus a few years before. Devo fucking rule.

  • !! <3 <3 <3 <3 !!

  • It's at the top of the list.....

  • Saw them in Bright UK 2 years ago and they put on a CRACKING (tongue in cheek) gig....brilliant.

  • It is Devo ....

  • I love that corny little dance that Mark does.

Also, this song is genius. The message is great.

    "Relax... and assume the position.

    Go into doggy submission."

Perfect comment on the religious right.

Such an intelligent and underrated band.

  • @Numinous123 i was thinkin praying hands was about masturbation .__. maybe a mixture of both?

  • ok, now I recognised the frontman. So it is Devo, indeed

  • it's devo, indeed? a bit strange (if it is posible to be stranger than devo)

  • great drummer!

  • Comment removed

  • Devo are such an under rated band, their whole package is so spot on and they have more humour than so many other bands, and they are good at taking the piss out of themselves.

Top band, 30 years on and i still play their music.

  • Dove?

  • That's Dove the Band of Love. It's Devo's Christian rock alter ego.

  • roll over, play dead...

    now assume the position!

  • Yeah, know this, not sure the poster does though.

  • Jaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzussss I feel the healing hand of Dove!

  • I hope that when i go to see them next week they have well designed t-shirts that i can buy to proudly (and slavishly) wear when i am out and about bowling the streets, and a badge as well for my jacket.

and i call other people consumer geeks!

  • Oh wow, thanks for uploading such a rare vid ;)

    Love their first album!

  • This band are awesome

  • That kicked ass!

  • Its tough to beat old school DEVO.

  • Pure awesomeness!! Thanks for posting this.

  • devo are brilliant every time i hear or see them i smile and chuckle and feel good

  • Thank you democrasse! That is some brilliant classic D E V O.

  • oh my god! this is one of my favourite videos ever!!! i want jerry so bad in this silly suit!

  • yes its available in mp3 just search for "online video converter" type the address in and choose mp3 as the output or video if you like, very easy.

  • This is my absolutely favourite live version of Praying Hands. Is it available on mp3?

  • I suggest, as I did, to extract the audio from the video and turn it into a MP3. I think its called FreeStudio and it costs nothing. I love this version too so I had to have it as an MP3.

  • Haven't heard this for the last 20 years...WOW! Shrivel up, people!

  • I saw DOVE on one of those Sunday Morning sing along with Tammy Faye type shows.

They came out in white suite.

Then never made it through the first number before the cut them off.

Apparently someone didn't do their research! HAHAHA!

  • YOU. ARE. KIDDING. ME. That's hilarious. My god, someone has to have some footage!!

  • Mark Mothersbaugh has the moves ! Very cool stuff.

  • great drumming!

  • we must repeat

  • Excellent! Awesome "Shrivel Up" performance!

  • If the DVD is available for purchase, what makes this rare ? Not trying to be a smart-ass just wondering. I appreciate your time !

  • It is not the film that is rare, but the performance- there are only a handful of times they ever performed as Dove the Band of Love, and lots of fans don't know these performances existed on video. So "rare" is a heads up to people.

  • its ok ...you can be a smartass if you want to. we do live in america after all lol. it is our freedom of choice. pun intended

  • DEVO Rulez!!!

  • shrivel up is so dirty

  • I would pay anything to have been there.

  • SHRIVEL UP MANCOW!

  • Shrivel up bobby robert jerry - mancow?

  • He says shrivel up over there to alen

  • I've got to be like the only Christian who listens to Devo. Still if i were brought up in one of those psychotic churchs where they slap you forhead and demand you empty your fucking wallet i'd feel the same. But those aren't really Christians, i believe those churches are part of a bullshittist sect.

  • right on the money. props

  • shrivel = best shit ever

  • Holy mamma of Bob! That was so great! Thankyoo thankyoo thankyoo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Unique. Original. No more to say.

  • Same here sparced. Shrivel up FTW! the bassline is awesome!!!!

  • shrivel up is my favourite devo track.

  • VERY PROFESSIONAL

  • DEVO was my hero now forever Mooooar!!!

  • Does anyone know if there's any DOVE audio available anywhere? I'd love this version of Shrivel Up. The DVD is terrific and, as has been said, is great quality, all things considered.

  • You could almost believe they were for real untill you hear the lyrics.

  • how old is this clip? 1978 or so? It looked like a great live show!

  • They add a sensational out-tro to shrivel up! I love it, it's a way of life. Going to go watch them in London pretty soon :D.

  • nice!

    111

  • The main dvd section while visually is great, the audio is a bit funky/distorted.

  • saw them at sheffield city hall in 1978+1980 awesome.

  • I saw Devo in Milwaukee in 1980, excellent show. Shrivel up is one of my favorites, too bad most people have only heard Whip It. Duty for the future now and the first album or the best IMO.

  • Yep. I was at that show too. Oriental?

  • jealoussss

  • amen... it's a God given fact... Devo was, and is still the future.. duty now.. lol

  • "It's rule number 1!" This is a great video! The music is as impressive today as it was in the 80's. Can't wait to get the M-80 CD/DVD.

  • DEVO is just so fucking cool it beggers belief. Great upload!

  • DEVO is seriously on another level. So into it.

  • wow DEVO always amazes me ever time I always think I havee seen everything they always come out with something

    that blows me away.

  • It's Dove, the Band of Love!

Agreed, great DVD. Can't believe it looks so good for being in someone's warehouse for 25 years. (This clip is nowhere near representative of the quality of the main part of the DVD.)
