I take shrivel up as a reference to how species in evolution will actually get smaller over time as resources dwindle. Also: Your DNA is programmed to kill you at a certain point. (Literally! That's the aging process.)
THIS IS NOT DEVO!!! This is DOVE: The Band of Love! These 5 guys opened for Devo the Devil band all throughout the '79 "Duty Now" tour...Some people in the audience (in Berkeley, yet!) did not GET IT and actually Booed DOVE!!!
@1devo6587 dying under daddies cap, say you go to college have everything paid for by your parents, but you dont do enough work. your just dying under daddies cap...so shrivel up in a little ball on the floor...you never get pissed, you have to pooty poot poot. think about this
Backstage before this show at University of Minnesota field house, Mark Mothersbaugh wrote me an autograph caption: "The Lord carries a flesh covered sword." What a day. We did survive the Reagan era. Thanks to art.
@jonel469 This B/W video was recorded on 3/4 inch tape on 9-22-1979 in Minneapolis. But it had deteriorated and was flaking when it was rediscovered. The video looks good because it was restored and enhanced by Rick Fuller and others in the early 2000s.
The footage is from "The M-80 Project," the first punk/new/no wave festival. It's supposed to be released on DVD soon by the MVD company.
After watching this, a few things become evident. Mark Mothersbaugh is the greatest front man of all time, and Devo are the most underrated band of all time.
And the bass line on Shrivel Up is ludicrously catchy.
David Byrne, while still a genius himself, stole most of his act from Mothersbaugh.
Devo never got the recognition they deserved, and thats fine, they stayed true to their music and still are one of the most energetic and crazy live shows out there.
I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. David Byrne & Mark Mothersbaugh were simply both on a similar wavelength. This happens all the time. It's not plagiarism when 2 people tap into the same idea at once. Brian Eno was a common thread connecting the 2 and probably contributed to some of the similarities as well.
@FaxanaduJohn It's funny....I was listening to shrivel up before I came to this video and I was telling myself......This bass line is great....very catchy. Then I read this.
@FaxanaduJohn I love Devo, but this is reediculous. I mean, the Feelies and dBs sold 1% of them. Devo was not as popular as they should have been, but sold well, were on TV and radio
@spiderkiss Uh. You can't both "love Devo" and think "this is reediculous". This IS Devo. Devo is and has always been about mocking stupidity with stupidity. This video is Devo holding up the mirror to the Xtian revolution of the mid-late 70s, and showing the world just how sick, stupid, and dangerous it was and still is. So... how is that "reediculous" or however the hell you butrchered the spelling? Go listen to A Flock of Seagulls. Devo is over your head. Shrivel up.
@MongoLloydd responding to this: I love Devo, they're in my top 10. I was referring to this:
"It is evident. Mark Mothersbaugh is the greatest front man of all time, and Devo are the most underrated band of all time."
Many obviously intelligent and with-it people 'got' Devo, me being one of them. Many. Devo sold well, so the public is not as stupid as you think. I dont think they were 'underrated.' Yes, millions of idiots didnt like them, but who gives a crap about them? Or Mongolloyd?
Devo are such an under rated band, their whole package is so spot on and they have more humour than so many other bands, and they are good at taking the piss out of themselves.
Top band, 30 years on and i still play their music.
I hope that when i go to see them next week they have well designed t-shirts that i can buy to proudly (and slavishly) wear when i am out and about bowling the streets, and a badge as well for my jacket.
I suggest, as I did, to extract the audio from the video and turn it into a MP3. I think its called FreeStudio and it costs nothing. I love this version too so I had to have it as an MP3.
It is not the film that is rare, but the performance- there are only a handful of times they ever performed as Dove the Band of Love, and lots of fans don't know these performances existed on video. So "rare" is a heads up to people.
I've got to be like the only Christian who listens to Devo. Still if i were brought up in one of those psychotic churchs where they slap you forhead and demand you empty your fucking wallet i'd feel the same. But those aren't really Christians, i believe those churches are part of a bullshittist sect.
Does anyone know if there's any DOVE audio available anywhere? I'd love this version of Shrivel Up. The DVD is terrific and, as has been said, is great quality, all things considered.
fuck jesus an fuck your fake god damn people got idiots believing there a magic guy that lives in the clouds an he will smite you if you piss him off but he loves you they all say-.- come really how stupid can some people be
I saw Devo in Milwaukee in 1980, excellent show. Shrivel up is one of my favorites, too bad most people have only heard Whip It. Duty for the future now and the first album or the best IMO.
Agreed, great DVD. Can't believe it looks so good for being in someone's warehouse for 25 years. (This clip is nowhere near representative of the quality of the main part of the DVD.)
I think it was not a devo, but a DOVE performance.
