I had 3 disc removed and replaced with bone grafts a plate and 8 screws...Now because of all the pressure from the 3 new disc and plating and screws the last 2 disc have blown and they want to do those, but after major researching and speaking with a few surgeons I will not get it done until they say I have to...I'm in major pain daily. This whole thing has ruined my life. It seems those who need 1 disc done do much better, I had to have to many done, now I'm just screwed. Best wishes to you.
Ok forget about my questions. For some reason I was not able to see the comments before. I just read that you are doing exercises and feeling great. Good for you. Thanks for the video.
@annachronistic : I'm not even sure I wanted to see this, I will be getting two discs fixed soon. But I saw videos of my umbilical hernia surgery and that went well. Good luck with everything!
@wakkaman666 considering the first surgeries (not necessarily spine) we performed pre anasthetic, unless u include alcohol, and pre germ theory...yes they didnt have a good time and most died. But look at us now! That raises the ethical question if we should do medical testing which may benefit many thousands at the potential loss of one
i only read your last comment, but maybe you didn't get the latest news...
Some people developed a new procedure, 3D-MRI is taken by technicians and a model from the spinalcord will be built, above the imitation of the spinal cord there is another kind of material which copies tissuesand so on...
So surgeons can train on those models before a hard surgery or invent new ways to make their work even better...
As one pointed out its kind of a Barbaric surgery to have done..I had to have it done from C4 thru C7, so I had 3 bone grafts and interior fusions a plate and 8 screws holding altogether. I woke up in the kind of pain as if I had been repeatedly Hacked in the neck with a Hatchet. I could not swallow food right for a very long time after, well I still choke now if not very careful.
Bad thing is now I need disc 2 and 3 done because of the pressure from the 3 level fusion. SEE NEXT comment...
Since the 3 levels already done 10 years ago, I have had little to no life, been in much pain daily. in 2009 they wanted to do disc 2 and 3 with same, bone grafts and all. I waited because I'm always sick, dizzy in pain and had just got over a double pneumonia.
Now talking to DR. again and he said he can do it but now its worse and if he does it, they will have to rebuild my whole c-spine 2 thru 7, I would have no mobility right? I need help people, please give advice to help
I really need to find a DR. that can do better then what I was told the other day. Already had 3 thru 7 fused with bone grafts, plate and screws, now disc 2 and 3 are blown and he wants to fuse those and that will mean what? having to go in and re-do all right? 2 thru 7 fused and bone grafts. I would rather die... He even said that even after that their would be another surgery... sounds like i'm screwed period. I hope that someone out there can help me with this. SOMETHING NEW?
I had an artificial disc put in at c5-c6 and it was ok for a few months and then I started having problems with it. I hurt all the time now and I'm not sure what can be done. I would advise any one who is thinking about the surgery to think long and hard before you do it. It can be great for some but if there is any way you can live without it I would try to. Hopefully in a few years the technology will improve and we can get upgrades :)

Now that it has been a few years since your surgery, how is your replacement holding up? I'm considering talking to my doc about getting a replacement disc. I've already had a discectomy and had brief relief, but I think I re-injured the disc again. Having had this done, would you recommend a replacement?
Also I've heard that once these wear out a spinal fusion is done instead of an additional implant...do you know or have you heard anything about that?
@TACPShep i would definitely recommend my OP and my doc. I give him most of the credit not just for a successful OP but for the confident reassurance before the OP. i still feel fantastic now and i mostly forget i've had some surgery when i am exercising and being silly. sorry i do not know much about other implants. good luck with yours.

@TACPShep What I was told is that after a disc is done, its done, so far I can not find another DOCTOR who will touch my neck as for the disc that another DR has done. Hell the doctor who did this to me Wont touch is as well.. Maybe they will develop a new replacement that will really work. I really feel all they did with me 10 years ago was to practice on me. They did not help the PAIN thats for sure. My pain has never let up and the drugs cause many other problems. be careful
Having had a discectomy in my early twenties I hada good ten years before a recent recurrence of lower back pain and excruciating sciatica. The Prodisc L is rated as having a life span of 40 years and I am hopefully going to be able to have this treatment myself. I can assure you that non surgical methods may well work for some people but to people with degenerative disc disease this operation is a total life saver and returns someone in former good health to good health!
@Si74l0rd Get the M6 ADR or the Neo Disk when it become available for lumbar.. The old style ADR over rotate and transfer shock. Better than a fusion but not ideal.

@bombdigidy99 nowp it isnt a heat gun!! at this point into the operation he switched to a welding torch as the adamantium metal alloy inserted into my spine had begone to fuse in place without any visible rejection.
so im gunna be homest here i had no reason once so ever to watch this i, just bored cruizing utube. and i pretty mush never ever wana have surgery ever ever agin in my life ever. they just kept sucking blood out soo much,
tell me one thing i have seven disc hernias starting in the lower back and moving up to the upper thoracic spine. if i try to be Nostradamus for a while i recon i will be in and out of surgery all the time. i want to know how long does an artificial disc last?and how many patients have died replacing these discs, and who in your opinion has the best hands for the job? can any of the readers tell me how to find the best Dr for the job.
I think the longest one so far is about 20 years ... but they've only been installing artificial disks for about 20 years, so they don't have statistics for longer than that...
With the advancements in the technology over the past few years, I think they are perfecting the little bushing in the middle! :)
I've been waiting ten years for the technology progress, and am having two "new bushings" put in my spine this summer ...
To find a surgeon you like - just test drive one & see what you feel.
The first one I saw - I didn't like. I did not feel he had MY best interest in mind and felt he was untruthful with me.
So I rolled the dice again, did research on the internet, and found someone about 5 hours from my home .... when I met with him - I adored him! He was honest, didn't give me BS information, was easy to talk WITH and his staff loves him. (Check how long they've worked with him!)
The surgeon who is doing mine this summer has done more than 1,100 ADRs and (don't laugh, I actually asked him) has never killed anyone ...
Realistically, 90% of the people will get a 50% reduction in pain and will get about a 50% improvement in what they can do ... so, pick ten things you'd like to do (paint my toenails, pet my little dog without having to kneel to do it) and HALF of those you'll accomplish...
Yours may end up better, but there is no guarantee...
Here at the Arizona Pain Specialists we can fix you back pain, neck pain or other pain with out an invasive surgery like this! We us minimally invasive techniques to cure pain that was only curable with surgery just a short time ago. More information see Arizona Pain . com
Did u get an MRI??? What sports u play??? Man Im addicted 2 sports like crazy. I only go 2 times a week. U now when I started weight lifting after like 1 month I had this problem. I dont know wat I did rough, but it kept getting worse. . I went 2 chiro and viso therapy they didnt do much. I dont care wat it takes I want 2 live life again. Sorry 2 ask , did ur neck effect ur back. U sound pretty happy about ur results. Im glad u are!! Ireeeeeeeeeeeally dont which this 2 any 1.
sincere suggestion to u is...take it easy on sports...no weights...trust me i am suffering for years...do yoga ...stretshes...dont go for surgery unless it is a must....good luck....
sorry 2 be a pain but how they find out u have spine problem??? did they do mri, x ray, ultra sounds?? bez i did xray nohing showed. im going 2 do mri and ultra sound very soon. i still go 2 the gym and do light weight and swimming. i dont know if its a good idea 2 do that.
not to worry at all. it is a pleasure to answer any questions. you are doing the right what i did. i am guessing you are addicted to your training as well. same here. i continued training, but i guess if i knew then what i know now. i might have reduced the intensity of my training a little. not totally of course, mainly cause we athlete go crazy when we dont train. initial diagnosis from my GP was muscle spasm. she said take a few paracetamol and rest. not satisfied as the pain got worse and...
...i started to lose feelings in my arms. i privately had an MRI scan done. that is where it was picked up. then i went thru a few surgeons until i found the one i was very happy with pre-OP. he didn't disappoint post-OP as well. i i am very happy to clarify any more questions you'd like answer to. please do not hesitate to ask.
Stop with Gym, phyisoterapy, Chiropratic..not weight at all!!!.wait for your MRI and talk to the specialist. XtraR is something older, doesn't show anything! I did wrong untill I couldn't do anything more, due my GP gave me wrong diagnostic.
Yoga and Pilates, are better, they strengh your muscles...tell them that you have a back pain, helps.
Xrays are good, a CT scan is an option that will often show more, and an MRI is most common (MRI is not an option for those with hardware such as pain pumps). Depending on what these show then a bone scan is another option. The bone scan is really good for showing ankylosing spondylitis etc. If you took/take prednisone or an anti inflam you should talk to your doctor because it may make something less visible. Some say it won't but stop, and think about what it does.
Hey wats up my friend can u till me wer ur symptoms before u had the surgery?? Im dealing with neck pain 24/7. Im an athlete that swims, weight lift, and play basketball. I had been having neck and upper back pain for 1year. i cant look up or turn my head both sides. When I wake up my neck, upper/lower back is al tight and stiffed. And by the way my neck cracks all the times. What should I do?????
well i think almost as you described it. but i cant remember my neck cracking all the time. guess there was some tightness and stiffness as you describe it. i think you should definitely see your doc. one advice thou: make sure you seek various opinions. i am very happy with the results of my surgery, but i guess NO-SURGERY would have been a better alternative. read and follow up on other comments on these video. there are some interesting views/alternatives out there.
i had a discectomy wen i was 17 years old. I was very unlucky to proloapse my disc at such a young age. I reccomend plenty of core stability, cycling and swimming after an operation to recover fully!
19years old!! geez, what did you do to yourself to be needing this surgery?? read comments made by LAbackandbody below. his references to an alternative to surgery is very interesting and i definitely would have tried it first before resorting to surgery. but i am very very and very happy with my surgery result. I can do all the sports i used to do before the surgery. i wish you all the best. i hope this helps. let me know if i can help you any further.
i ruptured my natural disc whilst in the gym. this is the op to fix my disc. OP was over a year now and i am very very fine. no problems at all. i can get you my surgeons details if you want.
I have been a prof. musician/drummer for most of my life & have had 5 simiar surgeries...They suck. This guy did a brave and hard surgery. These surgeries tend not to be that sucessful ie. without long term pain and less mobility. The technique is getting better with micro surgery. Not quite as barbaric. They are still quite painfull. My hats off to you.. Good recovery!!!
it's because they are operating on a flawed premise. they don't tell you the whole story, cause if they did you'd never have surgery. truth is, the facts on discs make no sense. very understandable how we have arrived at this thinking however, and currently they have nothing better to replace it with. check out my book: Disc Shmisc - a more accurate model of back pain. on amazon. or check out my website.
dr. bronk, i watched your videos on the theories on lower back pain with great interest. i'm a great believer in improving what we consider to be true/the norm. Not sure if you missed a point here thou. my pain was on my neck. both my arms degenerated over time and worsened. could your lower back theory apply to my case too?
if your condition is musculoskeletal, what is currently diagnosed as a disc, arthritis, stenosis, bone spur etc., and you are otherwise healthy, yes, absolutely. I dare you to find a better tx. the more you been around and tried everything else, the more you can appreciate.
what I can't cure is back pain from a systemic source, ie., fibromyalgia. in this case tx offers relief but does not cure.
sorry i do not understand the medical terms you are using. remember you are talking to a lay man here. what is TX? and i dont think you answered my question. the disc between c3/c4 was where i was operated. i felt instant relief post OP and i would be interested to know if you could have done better without invassive surgery.
yes, I could have done better. your success is the exception and not the rule. (and I'm very happy for you.) it's also been shown that surgery is most successful on the young whose muscles are at their most resilient and able to compensate. perhaps they cut through part of the pattern causing your pain. look at the big picture, the facts on discs make no sense. and why doesn't it work so well on everyone?
well, i guess we cant blame surgeons for being eager to use their scalpel, after-all that's what they trained to do. you must be one of the rare breed. keep up the good work. let me know if you would like to use me as one of your successful guinea pigs.
are you kidding? ethical doctors are horrified at what takes place on a daily basis:
The surgeons themselves are guilty of being insufficiently critical of products and techniques they are developing. . . . More people are interested in getting on the gravy train than on stopping the gravy train. Dr Richard Deyo, Professor Oregon Health and Science University.
Since that time spinal surgery has witnessed an industrial explosion, resulting in a multibillion dollar industry. . . . consider the fusion cage explosion. In the year after the 1996 approval of the BK and Ray cages, sales in excess of $100 million were realized. Four years later the efficacy of these stand alone devices is very questionable. SPINE Volume 26, Number 18, pp 1947-49 Presidential Address: Surgeons, Societies and companies: ethics and legalities.
well you should be sorry cos it is real. if you arent a surgeon, how can you come out with such a comment. the operation was performed on my neck. i know the pain i was in before the operation. Both my arms were numb and were progressively gettin worse, but after the operation i regained all sensation to my arms and lost the killer pain in my neck. type black7kilt in youtubes search bar and have a look at the other videos of me in the hospital & the OP.....
....Sorry to disappoint you and its a shame you surf the web and see the world with a very cynical eye, but not everyone is out to deceive. it is also very prudent to be absolutely sure of your facts before you make outrageous accusations. not to mention, VERY RUDE
How is eveything going? I hope well. I saw and read... I know what it is like I have a real bad spine (2 cervical fusion(s) with rods/screws) really god terrible pain in my neck, sholder blades, arms & hands...NOT GOOD! Then I had 2 lower back fusions... Not so bad BUT...I just sucks. I feel for ya BIG TIME...My surgeries came out rather poor...I have a worn out spine from Drumming my whole life and genetics...Luck of the draw. How do you feel now and who was the surgeon & hospital if I may ask?
my operation was performed by neorosurgeon Dr. Nicholas Thomas at the Blackheath Hospital in the UK. let me know if you need his number. its been over a year now and you wouldnt even know i ever had an operation. i have returned to gym sessions, athletics training and i've even taking on road biking+ countinued my off road XC rides. dont tell nick but i attempted a head stand a while ago, very gingerly thou.................cont'd
cont'd....................... Anyway to conclude, my OP was a major success. Pre OP consultations was so reassurin i was relaxed considering the severity and the post OP consultations was the icing on the cake. really sorry to hear about your back hope you get better soon and possibly return to your drumming. sounds like good fun.
I had 3 disc removed and replaced with bone grafts a plate and 8 screws...Now because of all the pressure from the 3 new disc and plating and screws the last 2 disc have blown and they want to do those, but after major researching and speaking with a few surgeons I will not get it done until they say I have to...I'm in major pain daily. tell me one thing i have seven disc hernias starting in the lower back and moving up to the upper thoracic spine. if i try to be Nostradamus for a while i recon i will be in and out of surgery all the time. i want to know how long does an artificial disc last?and how many patients have died replacing these discs, and who in your opinion has the best hands for the job? can any of the readers tell me how to find the best Dr for the job.
johnnyathanasiadis 1 year ago
@johnnyathanasiadis

@johnnyathanasiadis

Hiding the pain does not replace a destroyed disk.
Pain is supposed to let you know when something is wrong... simply masking the pain is not a cure.

not to worry at all. it is a pleasure to answer any questions. you are doing the right what i did. i am guessing you are addicted to your training as well. same here. i continued training, but i guess if i knew then what i know now. i might have reduced the intensity of my training a little. not totally of course, mainly cause we athlete go crazy when we dont train. initial diagnosis from my GP was muscle spasm. she said take a few paracetamol and rest. not satisfied as the pain got worse and...

dont do weights...stop immeditely otherwise u will srcrew ur life....
alexdoesntexist 2 years ago

What should I do?????
syrianguy20yrs 2 years ago
what were my symptoms??
well i think almost as you described it. but i cant remember my neck cracking all the time. guess there was some tightness and stiffness as you describe it. i think you should definitely see your doc. one advice thou: make sure you seek various opinions. i am very happy with the results of my surgery, but i guess NO-SURGERY would have been a better alternative. read and follow up on other comments on these video. there are some interesting views/alternatives out there.

i had a discectomy wen i was 17 years old.

OP was over a year now and i am very very fine. no problems at all. i can get you my surgeons details if you want.
black7kilt 2 years ago
is this a discectomy? if yes, do they always replace the herniated disc with a metal disc?

yes and yes. you are right on the ball.

Good recovery!!!
zildjianl 3 years ago 6
it's because they are operating on a flawed premise. they don't tell you the whole story, cause if they did you'd never have surgery. truth is, the facts on discs make no sense. very understandable how we have arrived at this thinking however, and currently they have nothing better to replace it with. check out my book: Disc Shmisc - a more accurate model of back pain. on amazon. or check out my website.

dr. bronk, i watched your videos on the theories on lower back pain with great interest. i'm a great believer in improving what we consider to be true/the norm. Not sure if you missed a point here thou. my pain was on my neck. both my arms degenerated over time and worsened. could your lower back theory apply to my case too?
black7kilt 2 years ago
if your condition is musculoskeletal, what is currently diagnosed as a disc, arthritis, stenosis, bone spur etc., and you are otherwise healthy, yes, absolutely. I dare you to find a better tx. the more you been around and tried everything else, the more you can appreciate.
what I can't cure is back pain from a systemic source, ie., fibromyalgia. in this case tx offers relief but does not cure.
LAbackandbody 2 years ago
sorry i do not understand the medical terms you are using. remember you are talking to a lay man here. what is TX? and i dont think you answered my question. the disc between c3/c4 was where i was operated. i felt instant relief post OP and i would be interested to know if you could have done better without invassive surgery.
black7kilt 2 years ago
sorry, tx is short for treatment.
yes, I could have done better. your success is the exception and not the rule.
LAbackandbody 2 years ago
and why is it every time I fix a case a "disc" case the patient ends up exclaiming, "that's it, that's my problem."
this is the holy grail of what doctors look for in examination and tests like discography.
LAbackandbody 2 years ago
well, i guess we cant blame surgeons for being eager to use their scalpel, after-all that's what they trained to do. you must be one of the rare breed. keep up the good work. let me know if you would like to use me as one of your successful guinea pigs.

are you kidding? ethical doctors are horrified at what takes place on a daily basis:
The surgeons themselves are guilty of being insufficiently critical of products and techniques they are developing. . . . More people are interested in getting on the gravy train than on stopping the gravy train. Dr Richard Deyo, Professor Oregon Health and Science University.
LAbackandbody 2 years ago
Since that time spinal surgery has witnessed an industrial explosion, resulting in a multibillion dollar industry. . . . consider the fusion cage explosion. In the year after the 1996 approval of the BK and Ray cages, sales in excess of $100 million were realized. Four years later the efficacy of these stand alone devices is very questionable. I just think this video is fake, I don't think it's a real operation. Sorry if I'm wrong.
SausageDog86 3 years ago
well you should be sorry cos it is real. if you arent a surgeon, how can you come out with such a comment. the operation was performed on my neck. i know the pain i was in before the operation.

How do you feel now and who was the surgeon & hospital if I may ask?
zildjianl 3 years ago
my operation was performed by neorosurgeon Dr. Nicholas Thomas at the Blackheath Hospital in the UK. let me know if you need his number. its been over a year now and you wouldnt even know i ever had an operation. i have returned to gym sessions, athletics training and i've even taking on road biking+ countinued my off road XC rides. dont tell nick but i attempted a head stand a while ago, very gingerly thou.................cont'd
black7kilt 3 years ago
cont'd....................... Anyway to conclude, my OP was a major success. Pre OP consultations was so reassurin i was relaxed considering the severity and the post OP consultations was the icing on the cake. really sorry to hear about your back hope you get better soon and possibly return to your drumming. sounds like good fun.
