Would this film get made today? In my humble view, Lonely Are the Brave is as much about the end of the American frontier as it is about a loner's search to live his individual life as he sees fit; the tensions between individual freedom and the common good. Question is: can that tension be resolved. If so, does the individual fare better than the collective or vice versa? The ambiguous ending reflects the open-ended nature of the question.
I stumbled onto this movie last Sunday moring on AMC. I truly thought Eastwood made the best Westerns. But this d'm movie moved me like none other. I am astonished I have never seen it before. This is my favorite "Western". AndI use quotes because it is NOT a classic Western. My God...Go watch it.
I saw this movie in the middle 60s when I was about 10....It was then and is now my favorite movie since....Kirk Douglas is truly and simply a marvelous individual...which makes him truly and simply a marvelous actor........
It's one of MY fav. movies too; so many thanks gentleman Kirk!
