You can use the Stero Imagery\Center chanel extractor to remove the vocals off one track to use as your instrumental. However if you've got tight snares and high hats or even 1khz syths plays your unliklry to be able to remove them. I've put in 4 hours tryin to make this work on a track and decidedits not possible on my current project.

Good one. BTW it's called phase cancellation. When two same frequencies are 180 degrees out of phase with each other they cancel one another if combined. Thus inverted instrumental part cancels its twin in the track with vocals leaving them out.

You'd need a perfect acapella and a perfect normal version of the song.. Line the vocals up perfectly and invert one of them..

Yeah it's now called Adobe Audition..

I'm still using Cool Edit pro 2.0 though, I aint changing something that works perfectly fine the way it is :D

The best I've got from this trick is crystal clear vocals (obviously) and tinny sounding music, because the sound waves aren't exactly the same. You can tell if they are the same by zooming right in & scrolling along. It's soo damn hard finding an instrumental that's exactly the same the same as the original. Almost impossible..

Excellent!! For those who don't believe this works, simply copy one track to a new one (highlight the track and Copy To New) so you have two of the exact same tracks, lined up perfectly, then invert one of them, and play them both in the multitrack.. You'll hear nothing, because it reallt does work..

@transparent91, it works - the properties of sound state this to be a truth. Digital audio, being an analogous representation of real sound.

If you reverse the polarity of any waveform, and put the EXACT mirror image (visually) of this waveform over top of itself, then the peaks and troughs (valleys) of the rarefactions and compressions of the digital wave will cancel each other out.

It's just real world physics replicated on your computer, and it's a crapload easier than replicating in life

As previous stated since most vocals are recorded in the center, this method cancels out much of the vocal. Now you should have a fairly clean version. Fiinsh up using Equalize to bring out the frequencies you want or your software supports it use parametric function. REMEMBER you have to select the whole file and apply the reverse, invert effect or whatever your software calls it. You know it did if one of the channels has reverse peaks in the waveform.

Neither the file type or software you use matters. In fact a free program called Audacity works well. Launch your audio editor and load the song. Next either open two editing windows or split the left and right channel. Now use Invert polarity function on one of the channels. Depending on software it might be called something else. As this video shows one of the wave forms is now reversed as far as peaks and valleys. This is called "center channel canceling".

How well this works, if it works depends on how the song was originally recorded. You don't need two versions of the song. You simply need to understand the process. When a song is recorded in a studio many, but not all vocals are recorded to a mike that is central, meaning neither favoring bass or trebel. The music portion often is split into multiple channels with some instruments favoring bass, others trebel that when mixed creates a pleasing stereo effect.
