What the series fails to mention is that on August 23 some German bombers mistakenly bombed London. The British thought it was deliberate and on August 24 some British bombers attacked Berlin--the first time ever that bombs had fallen on the capital of the Reich. Hitler went ballistic. He immediately ordered the shift from attacks on the airfields to massive bombings of London.
@zooeyhall A fascinating detail, the accidental bombing. Hitler's outrage at a British response is an unlikely cause of a major bombing campaign. Mr. Hitler's being a wretched strategist is bit of a canard. Likely extant was a rationale related to Barbarossa. Remember, Pearl Harbor facilitated Maylasia's conquest by depriving Britain of US naval support..
I love the juxtaposition of pilot A who tried to save the German caught on his wing and pilot B who wanted to kill 'em all. This is such a fantastic series.
When people think of the British, they think of the people for the South East of England. You never hear of Billy Connelley or Charlotte Church being called "British".
Most people think that the pilots of the Battle of Britain were all snobs from London. Many were from places like Scotland, the United States, Palestine and Rhodesia. There were even some from places like Poland and New Zealand.
Actually over 100 Polish Pilots flew, they were bilited in my home town Dundee, after Poland fell. According to the movie "The Battle of Britain", next to British Pilots the Poles were 2nd in number. In 1940 only a few American pilots flew, more Canadians and Aussies in '40.
Unfortunately, the "class" situation did prevail in the RAF. If you went to a public school, you were made an officer. If you didn't, you became a fighter pilot like the officers, but you were only a flight sargeant. You weren't commissioned, and you weren't treated like a commissioned officer. Pretty disgraceful! Fortunately, Britain isn't like that any more.
What the F are you on about "EU concentration camp"? Where's the tyranny? Where's the guards, where is the secret police? Where is the oppression? I can't see it.
People like you just need something to blame or attack.
If it doesn't exist, the make something up!
Yay! EU concentration camp.....
um, my liberty isn't restricted.. oh well. Concentration camp! Yaaaay!!
You said it, Askjiir, some of the people who post on YouTube are mentally deranged.... EU concentration camp! Tell that to any survivors of Auschwitz etc. (Must be a supporter of UKIP.)
To be fair, its 'the British' who are getting credit, not 'the English' or 'the Welsh' - so Scots are implicitly being credited just as much as everyone else in Britain. It was very much an effort by the whole country.
@swanningaround the credit is for the whole of britain we wernt fighting as england or scotland, we were fighting the nazis as the UK, it was the battle of britain, every briton did their bit welsh, irish, english and scotish. what a stupid thing to say
@liampw20 What a lot of bunkem. I suppose that the Poles and New Zealanders did nothing. They were fighting for the UK also. It is typical. the Scot, Dowding and the New Zealander Park fought bravely for England. They were replaced under disgrace by the English aviators Portal and Leigh-Mallory who took all the credit for winning. Later Portal ordered the war crimes against Dresden and other German cities, and tried to blame others like Harris. We all know the English style. It sucks. Really.
@swanningaround are u just a complete idiot, what the fuck is ur problem, do u understand that it was the battle of britain yes, ok gud so yeh the actual fighting was over southern england the pilots wer from all over the UK and yeh i know about the poles kiwis and aussies among others. but shut the fuck up saying the scots deserve SOME credit, they have all the credit as england wales and northern ireland cos ther BRITISH. england has no more credit than any of these, why u do u think so????
@liampw20 British british british. Stop the British rubbish. Everyone was British at the time. The Scots were British. The Australians were British. The Indians were British. None of them were English though. Let's be honest, only the English use the term "British" when they want to take credit for what the Scots did. No English one calls a English hero "British". Victoria Beckham is called English, never British. Lord Nelson said "England expects" not "British expects".
@swanningaround hahaha yeh u r as thick as i thought u wer, thnx mate u've insulted ur own intelligence. anyone who reads ur last input will know how stupid u are, i cant work out if ur stupid or just ignorant, peace bitch
@liampw20 You are the thick one. You can't even speak English. "u wer" is "you were" in English. "ur" is "you are" in English. Now I know just how bad the English education is. I have no idea what "peace bitch" means. It is certainly not American English anyway.
allies lost a more men n planes in bombing german cities compare to the battle of britain.
But due credit should be given 2 fighter command including polish pilots who risk their life to postpone operation sealion indefinitely.

@eus487
This series isn't written that way. Very few mentions of weapon types or unit designations in the entire series.
That's one of the reasons this outstanding series rates so high in the annuls of WWII documentaries.
This is a series about people and events as opposed to later docs that deal with weaponry. It is taken for granted that the viewer knows the weapons.
The interviews are one-of-a-kind. Olivier as narrator was a stroke of brilliancy.
All around one of the very best.

wonder why they didn´t mention the fighter losses from July´40 to October´40 : 631 Hurricane , 610 Bf 109 , 403 Spitfire , 235 Bf 110

@mc0558 It isn't that bad anymore, but the class system is still very much alive in Britain

The Scots should be given some credit. A Scotsman, Hugh Dowding was one of the main men in this battle.
