The US is always using people like Noriega for their so-called interests and then dump them when they are useless. Other examples are Shah of Iran, Marcos of Philippines, Zia of Pakistan and so on.
The next one in line is the president Karzai of Afghanistan. Shame on those pity leaders and their masters, Uncle Sam!
@Shiore2002 No nation and no political system is perfect, but if you can find a balance between justice and freedom it is better than being a puppet of a one man rule.
Ok, to all of you who do not know what really happened. Noriega killed Torrijos to get into power, then he released a bunch of criminals from prison and gave them guns, the level of crime in Panama went to the roof, he was a drug addict, started a dictatorship, the politicians elected by us the people, requested help from our friends, USA, we then got an INTERVENTION not an invasion like the commies want you to think. Noriega's criminals caused chaos, Noriega was out, end of story.
Have we forgotten that Noriega was a CIA asset? Even if he was a mass murderer the US wouldn't care a crap about Panama and its people if it wasn't for the canal.
@commandoslayer the us are some adbuser , because if they wanted noriega , they should had go nd just get him , not killing all this inocent people life................and they are so bussy getting in others people bussines like wtf , thats why my dad died in the world trade center
USA are the biggest and most powerful criminal organization in the world, with a powerful army to back their objectives up. pablo escobar only dreamed of such an army!
I hope he'll get a slow an painful death as he did for Spadafora. No mercy as he did for Giroldi when this last one decided to spare his life and as soon as he had the power back killed him in the most hideous way.
Justice said he should be freed in 2011? This is indecent. and take all the money back form his daugters and familly they don't deserve drugs' money.
Although the US obviously wasn't purely motivated by protecting freedom and democracy, taking Noriega out of office was beneficial to the Panamanian people. Noriega refused to honor the democratic process in the elections of 1989. He was involved in drug smuggling, racketeering, money-laundering, and murder. His Dignity Battalions suppressed peaceful protests with extreme violence. Noriega was bad for everyone, and anyone thinks that leaving him in power was a better option needs to study more.
@spudmustang Well, it didn't bring much better guys to power afterwards, a bunch pf drug trafficking puppets more likely. Also, U.S. killed 4000+ civilians during the invasion. How hard would it ahve been to send some of those Special force-freaks to capture Noriega? But no, Daddy-Bush had to show his muscle.
@JohnACorp782 At least those leaders were elected by the Panamanian people. And although the number of civilian casualties is still debated, I agree that even the lowest estimated number (under 1,000) is too high to justify. However, it's easy to look back at historical events and criticize the decisions of those involved because we have the advantage of knowing the outcome. Both sides share blame. Noriega was beaten and could have surrendered to save lives, but pride is not unique to Americans.
@spudmustang Well, it didn't bring much better guys to power afterwards, a bunch of drug trafficking puppets more likely. Also, U.S. killed 4000+ civilians during the invasion. @Ortheos2006 I agree that the U.S. government's motives, when it is engaged in international debacles, have less to do with promoting democracy than ensuring pro-American policies. But we're not talking about Chile. Or Vietnam. Or Iraq. We talking about Panama. And the simple fact is that Noriega was bad for individual rights and the democratic process in Panama. Leaving him in power would have been bad for Panamanians as well as the interests of the many nations that do business in Panama.
Noriega was just a pawn of the US Gvt....{its simple they were loosing control over him.......and they took him down, noreaga allowed colombian drug cartels to smuggle drugs from Panama To MEx then To USA or directly to usa...............Fact: There were No Crimes at all in Panama when he was under command, after Him hell broke loose, anyways he was a big bastard
why is Norega not allowed to talk to the public media? It appears the US govt has much to loose if he talks ... he would tell the truth how our Government is corrupt to the bone ... time for full disclosures and real audits of govt agencies to the CIA. If money cannot be found, put govt officals in Jail.

@mavop2000 Noriega was working for the American CIA, because America was the one selling and smuggling the drugs in the first place. I would not be proud that my dad killed 3000 innocent civilians for drug money. Also ask him why he didn't capture anyone in the American government because they were just a guilty as Noriega.
But that bush president said, he had the right to take the racist laws of keeping the niggers seated back in the bus to Panama. USA doesn't deserve to be run by Americans because of this madness.

Why are you guys so proud of the Panama Canal. You guys didn't build it and never took it away. Read the about Torrijos-Carter Treaties. There is two treaties.

"les dimo la patada en el culo y tuvieron que salir de Panamá, con el rabo entre las piernas en el 2000"
Last time I remember, it was a treaty way before the war started.
@chivo1080 You are rite, and after the US loses control of their allies then they want it to seem like they have to do something drastic after they were the ones who created the monsters.
A "Just Cause" le deberían llamar "Just Because"
Banana Republic is not defined by its regime or whether it's in the tropic or not. It's defined by its exports, if a country depends solely on one product (generally a tropical product) and has so much of an influence from an external factor (i.e. the US has financed every political party in the country) that all of its politics are determined by that external factor. In political science, Honduras is the typical example.
Well, I'm sure you are aware of the fact that wheter a country depends primarily on the export of agricultural products is also determined by 1. multinational companies that "invade" countries like Panama and virtually take over hundreds of towns and villages where e.g. bananas grow and 2. the World Bank and the IMF who - by promoting wrong macroeconomic approaches - deter a "Banana Republic's" intention to strenghen industralization and economic diversification.
You're right, except for the fact that Panama depends primarily on agriculture.
Actually, Panama depends on ports, commerce and tertiary sector in general, not solely on agro-exportations. And after 1999, the Canal is the main source of income for the country.
So I think that by stating this fact both of your points are knocked down.
(PART 2). Argentina is a good example here. Panama cannot be compared to Honduras, I agree. Many multinational companies are represented in those huge office towers in Panama City and the Canal has brought more money into the country. But there is no such thing as the "Trickle Down Economics" that Reagean talked about. How many Panamenians do actually benefit from those deals? Go to "Curundú" or to "El Chorrillo" in PTY and you'll see what I mean.
It has never been my intention to compare Panama's economy to Honduras'. And I do know that Panama does not primarily depend on the export of agricultural products such as bananas (even though it did to a much greater extent up till 1999). It's a fact that companies such as Chiquita or Dole (formerly known as the UFC) have been doing dirty business for many many years and it's also a fact that many countries would be better off If they wouldn't have followed the IMF's dogmatic proposals
I agree with you in both your points. However, I feel that blaming the IMF and multinationals solely is the easy way out, and keeps out many other factors that contributes to the inequality of the country. The most evident example is political corruption, and the way privatizations have been made, for instance, exchanging statal monopoly in telecommunications for a corporate monopoly (this is changing, luckily). At the end of the day both monopolies bring the same consequences.
Panama: Central American country Northwest of Colombia and Southeast of Costa Rica.
Banana Republic: A politically unstable tropical nation. Usually centered around a military dictatorship. The Generals wear epaulets as large as bananas.
Last time I checked we returned the Panama canal to the Panamanian people not the Spanish.
And tanks very much USMC for came a proof your new weapons here... and let down Col.Giroldi when he capture Noriega.. he call for help to your corp. and the choppers never come down and later Cara de Piña kill him !!!
Tks for be good friends right !!! Vayan c a la misma verggg tambien !!!
Dude I was there and lived threw it and Noriega was a thug... he had cops and soldiers rapeing and murdering his own people and americans... I was there...
Fuck you asshole am a Panamanian have some respect for my country, what has changed is that our country is full of hawaiian shirt wearing expat gringos.
ur rite, its wrong. i served with the 13th spec ops in panama during just cause, the only true anti terrorest teams the us has is delta and they werent in panama.
The idiots at the CIA were the ones who actually installed Noriega to begin with, and henry Kissinger knew what Noriega was doing but said nothing because it didn't impede on US interests, it was only until he started slaughtering his own people did the CIA try to cover their asses and take him out. Yet another dictator puppet the CIA installed to prevent the communists (just as ruthless) from taking over
yet again, the united states invades a soverign nation. Bush just wanted to show that he had balls after people were calling him a whimp. its too bad panama had to suffer from it.
the panamenian army only had a helicopter... and most of the panamenian army took off their military clothes and ran away... this invasion is a total blasphemy, just part of US's imperialism. OH MY GOD! the use of the super special forces of the US to capture a fucking dictator whose army could only fight against unarmed protesters... besides the city got all fucked up, many civilians were killed by the marines... it wouldve been best to send some few "agents" and arrest the dictator...
the units resisting were people, there were no tanks and most of the people opposing the u.s. were guerrilas such as columbian cartels, and panamanians under the dictator noriega. u.s. should have kidnaped noriega and put out the small ass military noriega had. instead u.s. attacked run down places, poor housing, sick weak and poor people. wtf is that about. i mean panama was no real threat no nukes or super armies or anything like that.
lols ok so im a panamanian and a u.s. soldier in ranger batallion. i think there should have been a better tactical move into panama as they dont show they attacked the poor places people who struggle to live, panamanian citizens did not have corruption because they were afraid from thier dictator manuel noriega the resistance was weak alot of people gave up and were glad the u.s. came to help and put out noriega, but what i dont aprove of was the use of force as if panama had tanks and nukes.
That area was full of people that had been displaced by the invasion and lived in shanties near the towns of Pacora and San Joaquin (sp). Alot of them were using parachutes in front of thier shanties as sun shades. We destroyed alot of infrastucture of the country when we invaded. Alot of the Panamanian police that we patroled with in Tocumen were living together or with friends because their houses were destroyed. I worked with this one guy that had lost his brother during the invasion.
I was there as a dependant in the mid eighties and as a soldier durring promote liberty from Jan to june '90 right after the invasion... I was an MP .. I will agree with usmc721. The Panamanian death toll was pretty huge. If you know anything about Panama Viejo (the hardest hit area) and the population density there, you would know that just in that area, 200 deaths is laughable. That area was totaled pretty good. My unit patroled Tocumen "E" area ..........
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Panamenian soldiers were running for their lives like raped Mexican senoritas after a Mexican gangbang. "Vienen los gringos, vienen los gringos! Quitense el uniforme y corran duro!"
I remember my big brother shooting an ar15 violating the ginebra rights at skidiving soldiers...and when they where lowering down it was like shooting at a sitting duck.kill 8 I will never forget and by the way my dad is american I'm white.and now I work at sdi tactical in the states and magpul so as you say in your post quitense el uniforme....well yeah some of them ran some of them raped the shit out of us ps so..
of course the panamanians put up a resistance. its just that the US doesn't want to admit it. they lost 530 somthing men, but the US says they only lost 20 soldiers, thats bull.
Well, did the Panamanian army put up any resistance whatsoever? Also, how many civilians were ACTUALLY killed? Wikipedia and our government says 300 but I know that's bull.

A "Just Cause" le deberían llamar "Just Because"

JJNEMESIS22 2 years ago 3
Banana Republic is not defined by its regime or whether it's in the tropic or not. It's defined by its exports, if a country depends solely on one product (generally a tropical product) and has so much of an influence from an external factor (i.e. the US has financed every political party in the country) that all of its politics are determined by that external factor. In political science, Honduras is the typical example.
ivdsc1 2 years ago
Well, I'm sure you are aware of the fact that wheter a country depends primarily on the export of agricultural products is also determined by 1. multinational companies that "invade" countries like Panama and virtually take over hundreds of towns and villages where e.g. bananas grow and 2. the World Bank and the IMF who - by promoting wrong macroeconomic approaches - deter a "Banana Republic's" intention to strenghen industralization and economic diversification.
souldoubtvienna1 2 years ago
You're right, except for the fact that Panama depends primarily on agriculture.
Actually, Panama depends on ports, commerce and tertiary sector in general, not solely on agro-exportations. And after 1999, the Canal is the main source of income for the country.
So I think that by stating this fact both of your points are knocked down.
ivdsc1 2 years ago
Go to "Curundú" or to "El Chorrillo" in PTY and you'll see what I mean.
souldoubtvienna1 2 years ago
People should know about the economies and history of countries before posting any comments here, otherwise stereotypes will only strengthen.
The fact is, you cannot compare Panama's economy to Honduras', for instance, which is the prototype of what people call "Banana Republic".
ivdsc1 2 years ago
It has never been my intention to compare Panama's economy to Honduras'. And I do know that Panama does not primarily depend on the export of agricultural products such as bananas (even though it did to a much greater extent up till 1999). It's a fact that companies such as Chiquita or Dole (formerly known as the UFC) have been doing dirty business for many many years and it's also a fact that many countries would be better off If they wouldn't have followed the IMF's dogmatic proposals
souldoubtvienna1 2 years ago
I agree with you in both your points. However, I feel that blaming the IMF and multinationals solely is the easy way out, and keeps out many other factors that contributes to the inequality of the country. The most evident example is political corruption, and the way privatizations have been made, for instance, exchanging statal monopoly in telecommunications for a corporate monopoly (this is changing, luckily). At the end of the day both monopolies bring the same consequences.

He was just another Banana Republic dictator.
ConservativeAthiest 2 years ago
it's obvious that you don't know what you're talking about...
Panama, by definition, is not a banana republic due to its strategic position and the canal (which by the way you paid for, but it's ours now haha)
ivdsc1 2 years ago
Definitions:
Panama: Central American country Northwest of Colombia and Southeast of Costa Rica.
Banana Republic: A politically unstable tropical nation. Usually centered around a military dictatorship. The Generals wear epaulets as large as bananas.
Last time I checked we returned the Panama canal to the Panamanian people not the Spanish.
You are worthless.
ConservativeAthiest 2 years ago
By the way, don't give me lessons about Panama, I'm panamanian, I just live in Spain.
And if you want to know more about my country or want more lessons in politics, just let me know ;)

The idiots at the CIA were the ones who actually installed Noriega to begin with, and henry Kissinger knew what Noriega was doing but said nothing because it didn't impede on US interests, it was only until he started slaughtering his own people did the CIA try to cover their asses and take him out. Yet another dictator puppet the CIA installed to prevent the communists (just as ruthless) from taking over

the panamenian army only had a helicopter... and most of the panamenian army took off their military clothes and ran away... this invasion is a total blasphemy, just part of US's imperialism. OH MY GOD! the use of the super special forces of the US to capture a fucking dictator whose army could only fight against unarmed protesters... besides the city got all fucked up, many civilians were killed by the marines... it wouldve been best to send some few "agents" and arrest the dictator...
jameabeto 3 years ago 4
the units resisting were people, there were no tanks and most of the people opposing the u.s. were guerrilas such as columbian cartels, and panamanians under the dictator noriega. u.s. should have kidnaped noriega and put out the small ass military noriega had. instead u.s. attacked run down places, poor housing, sick weak and poor people. wtf is that about. i mean panama was no real threat no nukes or super armies or anything like that.
hotpapi17 3 years ago 3
lols ok so im a panamanian and a u.s. soldier in ranger batallion. i think there should have been a better tactical move into panama as they dont show they attacked the poor places people who struggle to live, panamanian citizens did not have corruption because they were afraid from thier dictator manuel noriega the resistance was weak alot of people gave up and were glad the u.s. came to help and put out noriega, but what i dont aprove of was the use of force as if panama had tanks and nukes.

I worked with this one guy that had lost his brother during the invasion.
onespeedgreg 3 years ago
I was there as a dependant in the mid eighties and as a soldier durring promote liberty from Jan to june '90 right after the invasion... I was an MP .. I will agree with usmc721. The Panamanian death toll was pretty huge. If you know anything about Panama Viejo (the hardest hit area) and the population density there, you would know that just in that area, 200 deaths is laughable. That area was totaled pretty good. My unit patroled Tocumen "E" area ..........

The Panamenian soldiers were running for their lives like raped Mexican senoritas after a Mexican gangbang. "Vienen los gringos, vienen los gringos! Quitense el uniforme y corran duro!"
I witnessed that myself.
