  • I live in the US and Mam is most commonly used when adressing usually an older woman. Say you're at the store and don't know where something is and need to ask. But if say it's a younger lady in her 20s or a little older, you would probably say 'miss' instead.

  • I've never heard of "give sth. a whirl", but it sounds like a good substitute for "give sth. a try". :)
