Horses have an extra ssense gland for smell under their top lip. when they curl the lip up they're trying to smell more. My pony does this a lot, particularly around food! Very Cute

It is called Flhemans(sp)response. Stallions do it to get a better scent of the mare or if they are just smelling something unfamiliar and trying to see what it is.

She's a nice horse. What she is doing is perfectly normal, it's called the flehmen response. She has smelt something that she has found interesting and by curling her lip up she is closing her nostrils to isolate the smell and examine it in more detail.

I went to a stable recently... each of the horses were in their nice stalls tucked away with their heads peeking out.... in the hall there were bags & bags of carrots... I went to go & give 1 of the horses a carrot, and all the others started doing their own individual & creative mouth gesture to get my attention to come over to them... smacking their lips, or smiling, or playing with their tongue & making funny noises with it. Horses are soo smart & so funny! I love them!!!
