Ok, im doing a science project with this, i need to know ALL of the maerials and any information on how to make one, i dont need one MEGA powerful but something with decent power, so if yu can...reply, thanks.
To make a good capacitor bank, you need photo flash or pulse capacitors. They can store up high amperage/voltage, and discharge it all in one short burst.
Photo flash caps run at ~300 volts and are realatively cheap.
Pulse caps run at up to 30 KV (for some) and can cost thousands of dollars.
@coatduck Amperage kills, not voltage. Static electricity can be up to 15 KV, but it's harmless. Camera capacitors run at 300 volts, but have enough amperage to kill multiple people at once.
@lyrison ok, well, lightning is static electricity, and that kills. I have taken 8 of these capacitors across the chest (not something I would recomend) indeed you are correct about the voltage and amperage. but there simply isn't enough power to do any damage, otherwise if you put your fingers on ether side of the battery, you would die. there just isn't enough power. if you start dealing with larger stuff, you may have a point, but think about it, they market these to little kids!
@coatduck Electricity can penetrate dry skin at ~70 volts. So, once you have 70+ volts, amperage makes all of the difference, and camera caps can reach 300 volts at enough amperage to KILL.
hey buddy I subscribed. I'm also trying to buid one and I started making the rails also the design is not simple but i will look really nice prototype all I need some help is with electronics. Maybe we can work together. hit me up a pm so we can talk. I haven't made a video but I can email you some pics
watch my video on how to make a 400v charger circuit which is a shrunken down version made from just four components. it is called ' how to make the 400v charger circuit / module '
I took apart my camera and i didn't listen to you about the capacitor... luckily the knife i was using had a plastic handle... It put two holes straight the the knife!!!
no ur the dumbass cuz if u did then u would no this kid knows nothing..... and also by my statement u can not assume i do not have an "electronic background" maybe i did not learn anything because i already know it. u stupid prick, two ur calling people dumbass behind a fucking screen
@deathcorepyro I'm with you man. Calling someone a dumbass behind a screen when they didn't do anything wrong is just plain stupid. Of course, you are an exception since n00bcr3w had it coming.
@biggarlo haha for one, its "sodder" and im guessing your from europe because the only people that have inquired abut the railgun so far have been from the E.U.
soo anyway, if yall have hardware or pluming stores they should sell it there, also radio shack and other electronic stores carry it.
@zombizFTW na im not European, well the family hasn't for a bout 150 years, but anyway i guess i can let it slide the French invented it and it would have been pronounced that way in French a few hundred years ago and probably pronounced that way in English too while the French were showing the Poms how to do it. just a question because silver is mined in places like Australia Europe and china who all spell it solder. how is it spelled on the label of the stuff on ur workbench?
@zombizFTW lol mk. what confuses me is where the wires go and what they connect to. like the order of how they connect. like from the battery where will it go to first and where the wires stringing the capacitors together connect to and so on. like in general where the wires connect to. idk exactly how to describe it...sorry
I viewed a lot of videos on youtube about how to make a railgun, but i always got stuck at the capacitor bank. After I watched your video I understand how it works. Can you just say what voltage will you use to fire the projectile when you are done? & How many Farads will all the capacitors have together?
well to start how big of a railgun are you doing? like the average DIY size, eg- 6 in?
well volts are not a really big deal with railguns its amps that make the projectile go. so put it through a transformer and aim for somewhere around like 20v and upwards of 10+ amps. also it matters how many capacitors i have; and more farads mean more amps, the more amps the faster my projectile goes :) if this comment is confusing or you need any other help, comment back.
can I do this with a bread board?

question can you use a taser to get you started to make a rail gun?

those capacitors are electrolytic capacitors don't charge them backwards. The can explode if they are charge from a reverse current

@zombiezFTW, solder is lead and tin. Since lead is toxic they add tin. When you buy it you can choose the ratio of lead and tin, I prefer 60-40
