Sounds like he's defensive about his food -- some cats, not just kittens, are like this, and the noises basically mean: "This is MY food, and if you move an inch closer, I'm gonna slice and dice your face!"

Some cats have this habit of making sound when they eat. I had a domestic house cat, who used to make such noise. Especially, when she's very hungry. It is like a signal "Do Not Disturb". Observe if he makes such noise when he's very hungry.

He's actually making those sounds because you're coming close to his food. He probably doesn't want you near him when he eats. Unless he makes that sound when you're not near the bowl while he's eating. That's just my guess.
