@calfan3 Tankers (both over the road and over rail system) have a vent system in place that is suppose to vent excess gas out of the tank. In the event of an accident or fire the vent sometimes malfunctions causing a build up of air with a fire load causing the explosion.

@Danklin24 From what i can see, the leaked gas could of caught fire and cars have a nasty habit of being quite flammable in the underbelly. Tires, leaked gas, or anything else can catch the fire from the gas, and the car catches fire. Also with recent cheap cars, the have plastic tanks, which can melt, leak gas, and the car catches flame.

I think the cop did a good job. The fire can be seen from my point of view, but eventually can not be seen from the arriving cars, as the smoke goes through the next street. It is always good to have someone in place to direct the firefighters, ambulances where to go....

Although the Officer should not (in my opinion) have directed the apparatus that close to a car fire, they should have parked on the street where they turned in from to stay away from the fumes and such. I wouldnt want to get my $500k apparatus that close. Not only that, most hose lays (speedlays, crosslays included...) are 3 lengths of 50' hose that you have to flake out anyway so why get that close in the first place. Just my opinion...not that it matters.

But yes I believe most hose is 50' lengths, unless it is larger hose then they come in 25' lengths. I guess it all depends on the department SOP.
