  • wow what is this on

  • Why have you skipped the amazing 4 CHANNEL music by Jonathan Dunn???

  • i used to bloody love this! just treated myself to a 128k and this game (amongst others) the kids dont seem impressed but im loving it! good times.

  • Always thought those objects in the road you bounce off your bonnet looked like giant coconuts.

  • John 'O Brien is a WIZARD !

  • best version is this +2 one. Amiga/Atari ST are crap! not to mention the c64 one.

  • As usual, a spectrum arcade port which shits all over the commodore 64. For all their amazing at the time capabilities commodore machines always fall flat on their ass when it comes to arcade ports...

  • Most of my emails are larger than this game.

  • Really good version.

  • Spectrum games are just the coolest ever.

  • oh I remember this! ! ! Oh the memories :)

  • Seeing how great the ZX version is I want to smash my C64 ;( !! The chase hq on commodore is slower than my grandma...

  • Man, I loved this game. I remember being awestruck by the engine sound change when you entered a tunnel. Haha... it's the little things in life!

  • still play the speccy version CHQ on my XBOX!!! :))))

  • I miss my Speccy 128k

  • Remember the cheat mode? Select keyboard control & enter the keys as S H O C K E D respectively. Then go back to the menu, choose whichever controls you want & you can start again on any level where you run out of time.

  • As a C=64 owner, I actually almost wanted to buy a ZX Spectrum in those days to get a decent conversion of Chase HQ, but then the amazing Chris Butler created Turbo Charge for System 3 on the Commie: a fast, colorful and magically designed game in the spirit of SCI: Chase HQ 2.. I still got the original disk-version. Btw: SCI is so much better on the Commodore 64 than it's predecessor, and it was produced on cartridge too! :)

  • one of my favorite games )

Well who so steers the wheel that

  • one of my favorite games )

  • Everyone said the spectrum was crap what idiots look at the frame rate compared to the amstrad or c64 I FUCKING LOVE THE SPECTRUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @DAZZYVANDAM Yup, true. The speccy is actually about 8% faster than the Amstrad if you run the assembly. This is because it only has one pen color so the redraw rate is faster even though the res. is higher than the CPC Mode 0. Both CPC and Speccy are based on the Same z80 code with minor differences. The CPC is actually a port of the speccy version with mode 0 graphics. The res. is lower and the frame rate slightly slower and no music but still v good compared to other versions. V colorful.

  • @ogicabp4u Well all the technical stuff aside (coz i'm a bit dim) was a great game which ever way you look at it.

  • @DAZZYVANDAM awesomely talented coders - which ever way you look at it. :)~

  • @ogicabp4u True True lol

  • this was the "need for speed most wnated" of those great times! i still own itand and also own the arcade version of Chase H. Q.

  • the Porsche 928 is one of my fave cars coz of this game

  • not bad !

  • this version of chase hq was by far the best i had ever played the hours went by so fast when i was a kid because of quality gaming like this and so many others on the spectrum next gen consoles dont even get a look RESPECT THE GOLDEN AGE OF GAMING RETRO OR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If I remember right, the Speccy was rated as having the best conversion of Chase HQ, including the 16 bit ones.

    Boggles the mind.

  • Hold on, man!

Fuckin cops are as annoying in this game as in real life... Eat my nitro, pig!!!

  • You are retarded. FACT, do not bitch and complain at me.

  • I haven't got the first clue what you're talking about, but I certainly don't like you

  • You hate the Police, therefore you are an idiot by default.

And you think I give a shit that some random twit on the Internet doesn't like me? Newsflash mate,I stopped caring about that kind of thing several years ago.

  • Bye then

  • Wow this was great to see again, brings back good memories, had this game on the +2

  • me too, i think it's best speccy car game ever programmed

  • @kalateur

still can't believe this runs on a 48k speccy with speed too!! but no sound apart from a blip and a drone for the engine.

  • damn, this brought back memories

  • Let's go Mr Driver!

  • So, why is it called the Spectrum even though the palettes suck? Don't get me wrong, this game looks like a lot of fun to play, despite being ungodly in difficulty, but it doesn't look too smooth. :/

  • was originally called zx 82. (because it was produced in 1982) the 1980 version was called the zx80 and the 1981 version the zx81. Both were black and white. This was the first one the produced with color, hence it was renamed the zx82. It was the very first computer in it's class and price range to be able to produce color output on a screen. It lasted 12 years!!

  • @Purianite

it was originally going to be called the zx82 the the predecessors being the zx80 and zx81 which were black & white computers with no color or sound. Marketing wanted to emphasize that this computer had color! So they called it the zx spectrum... most computers at the time had monochrome graphics..unlike the zx with 8 colors! albeit with crappy color clash!! Not bad for early 1982!

  • 1982, and the thing was supported until 1994, and only had 8 colors? Not bad. I've heard some Spectrum music, it's kickass. Games sound better than they look.

  • @ogicabp4u

"most computers at the time had monochrome graphics .unlike the zx with 8 colors"

wrong. only the zx80&81 were monochrome by that time. and 8 colors was about the worst you could get on the market.

  • @waskoma

the atom was also monochrome...unless of course you wanted to pay 1000's of dollars for a color computer. In 82/83 this was the best most colorful computer around at an affordable price!

the C64 came out in late 83 and the CPC in 84.

  • @ogicabp4u: correct, there were other monochrome computers, but atari 400/800 was under $1000, apple II $1200, VIC20 maybe $300, c64 was out by 82, and there were others too none of them costing thousands & all being better than the speccy. truth is speccy was uk poor man's computer, was designed to be from the very start and it shows. as of what was the best most colorful affordable computer look at the sales: c64 hands down.

  • best speccy racing game indeed

    a.w.e.s.o.m.e.

  • Excellent, it takes me right back. Good skills! I have to say when I first heard the siren in the "attack" section I thought it was awesome and very exciting lol! Those were the days...

  • hahahaha this takes me back!!! but how HARD was this game, i dont think i got past the 2nd level? lol

  • yeah, really hard. At 4th and 5th you have to be a professional driver to finish it :)

  • One of the Top 10 Spectrum games I've ever played! :)

  • the best racing game on spectrum

and one of the best graphics games on spectrum

  • The break sound is funny," bit bit bit " I'm glad cars don't make that sound in real

  • this looks far more playable than the awful amiga version!

  • Actually, along with Amstrad CPC version, is the most playable version

  • @kalateur both were based on the same z80 assembly code by the same programmers (me thinks!). The ZX speccy is slightly smoother and higher res. No music or intro graphics on the Amstrad. However, they didn't do a cheap spectrum port they recoded the graphics in mode 0. Although blocky it was in 16 glorious colors with no color clash. the Amstrad loading screen was a direct port from the speccy!!! Some graphics other graphics were also missing. These coders had some awesome talent. WOW!

  • @kalateur The Spectrum version scored higher than the Amiga and ST conversions in the game reviews at the time. :)

  • @kalateur Do not forget the MSX version which is almost a clone of the ZX Spectrum one. Awesome game, pure action!

  • I have an improved Spectrum clone "Pentagon-1024". Unlike original Spectrums, it has 1 Meg of RAM (using 30-pin SIMM module), 7MHz software controlled turbo mode, Yamaha YM2149F soundchip, TR-DOS and additional video mode 256*192 without screen clashing (I mean 1 color per point)

  • some time ago, i tested a chasehq with that soundchip and it was amazing!!

  • Yes! Collest game I ever seen on Speccy!

It runs soooo much more smooth on 7Mhz =)

  • I think R-Type is the coolest game I've ever seen on the Speccy... but yeah, Chase HQ is very good. How do you mean 7Mhz? do you mean speeded up on an emulator??

  • I have an improved Spectrum clone "Pentagon-1024". Unlike original Spectrums, it has 1 Meg of RAM (using 30-pin SIMM module), 7MHz software controlled turbo mode, Yamaha YM2149F soundchip, TR-DOS and additional video mode 256*192 without screen clashing (I mean 1 color per point)

(sorry for dublicated message :) )

  • RType is a game far superior of speccy's beatemup(i think "forgotten worlds" is closing)

  • Amstrad CPC 6128 was the best version.

  • Incredible technical achievement.

  • Lord have mercy

  • Quality conversion - puts most of the 16-bit versions to shame. Even the Megadrive version wasn't as good as this Speccy classic.

  • yeah, i'm agree you. I play almost all version and i can say second best port is for Amstrad CPC

  • Wow, those are some pretty damn good graphics for the Speccy. I got the gameboy version of this game, and this version looks so much better.

  • I loved this game. Very addictive.

  • lol too much poles at the chicane

  • What a game. One of my favourites, along with the Dizzy games.

  • It is no problem to make 1-bit samples on the ZX Spectrum.

  • with AY chip you can have 5-bit samples, 1-bit sample would be barely audible trough the noise

  • some game like Chase HQ and Robocop have samplers in game

  • No problem and to be fair it's not as if the sound on the spectrum was that clear anyway. By the way which Spectrum did you have? I had the 48k of the first model. (The one with the rubber keys) Then I had the ZX Spectrum +2A with the ZX Printer. Here are my top 5 games not any in order. 1. Robocop

    2. Chase H.Q. 3. Spellbound Dizzy 4. The Untouchables 5. Cabal

  • i had an Spectrum 48k and later Spectrum +2A(broken :( ) . My top 5 are Chase HQ, Robocop, Cabal, Operation Wolf and Skool Daze. Actually i like every game that at first degree u think it was impossible to program on Spectrum like for example Lemmings, Pang, Shadow of the Beast, Narc, etc.

  • It's "HOLD ON MAN!!" not HOW LONG MAN!!!

  • thx for the info!! i'm not english speaker so after 15 years i know the truth ;-) many thanks again!!

  • The great thing about multi loads on the speccy was that once you loaded a part of the game, it stuck in memory so the next time you went to the level, you didn't need to load it, i dont think it applied to all of its games though.

  • There are some games like chq dragonninja batman the movie etc that u can load in 128K and the tape will only "stop" after loading all "levels". Also the sound has some improvements if loaded in 128K mode. Some guru will explain this a lot better than me. But it was really good this way coz if you loose u had to search the tape (by ear) for level one. Ah to do this "complete level loading" u need a 128K.

  • My god i feel like a kid again, this was absolute fav fav fav game we had on the zx, i remember the music too classic.

Im gonna stop watching it no before i cry...

  • one of my favourites too!

  • painful to listen to

  • brilliant conversion for the speccy, the scrolling is smooth and plays very well, nice graphics, i bet this is a multi loader, if only outrun was as fast as this

  • at it's age, i had 128k spectrum. I just loaded it and after 15 minutes(time to do homeworks :D) i played it without any more loads

  • classic

  • LET'S GO MR DRIVER!.

  • HOW LONG MAN!!! :D

Saludos a Kalateur :)

  • Le tengo que echar a un vistazo. Creo que en su momento jugue a una demo pero no llegué a comprarlo. Entre el ChaseHQ y el Cabal estaba muy ocupado!! :D Feliz Año chichuf!!

  • Yay! This is up there with Crazy Cars 3! Somehow we used to really appreciate games like this when we had to wait soooo long for them to load up!

  • yeah, i'm still remember loading this games in my 128k Speccy. many minutes waiting but it was worth it

  • yep, it was a bit strange back then at the beginning of the 8 bit craze, every man and his dog wanted to retail games so you could get them at odd places like chemists. WH Smith had a big section selling hardware now it's down to a few xbox titles.

Going in and programming spectrums to scroll 'fuck off' up the screen was a good pastime

  • Loved the added Miami Vice like character pics to the Speccy version, how did they get away with that?

  • sorry, dont understand what u mean

  • The fact the protagionists look exactly like Tubbs and Crocker from Miami vice.

This was something that only happened in the speccy version.

  • Maybe becuase Ocean at one pont had the licence for Miami Vice and released a game based on the show,i suppose they figured nobody would notice and i guess the TV Network didnt either :P

  • It's a possibility, then again in the arcade the look sorta like them already.

Were the Japanese fans of Miami Vice?

  • The spectrum was rubbish in a cute, likeable way...

  • i think it was pretty good

  • The ZX Spectrum...the computer equivalent of black and white film. It single handedly undermined every other computer going with the bizarre imagination of its games, its humour, its surpises and its accessibility.

  • How dare Ocean put out an appalling version of chase hq on the amiga - and at 25 quid too! What planet were these guys on? And yet they were always blowing their own trumpet about how great they were. Disgraceful i say...

  • Shame about the lamentable Amiga version though...

  • dont play c64 version. it's a real crap

  • you should of seen the st version, think i paid £19.95 for it at the time

  • classic game, it was amazing when the co-driver shouted stuff

  • not bad for a speccy

  • one of the best programmed at its time

  • Great video,i still got this 4 my spectrum +2,now where did i stash it! Pure class.

  • i still have the instructions and sometimes i playe with my emulator. One of my favourites!!

  • yeah, the playable demo was amazing!

  • God, I remember this game, the arcade version at least! I was ADDICTED to it!

  • Man he only used one turbo booster

  • too many years playing ;-)

  • '' Thats ok, at least thats one less cyber criminal on the pixel streets, Hes goin to jail. lol ''

    Amen to that lol.

  • Could have sworn the 128k had speech in the mission screen too. Maybe time has eroded my mind (quite probably).

  • there is even a Easter European version with all the sounds renewed!!

  • even the speech in the st version was cut to "this is nancy at headquaters, we got an emergency here" apparently the amiga said the whole script

  • Actually you're wrong. I have the amiga version and the speech is also cut. In amiga chase hq 2 the whole script was said (interesting fact no. 43587634.5)

  • your right, i got my emulator going a couple of days ago and the amiga only says the first line, just like the st did. That'll teach me to listen to my mates, it was over 17 years ago though.

  • Another stone cold classic to go along with Outrun and Double Dragon

  • the next stage is harder ;-)

  • Speckys Ruled the 80's!

  • 80s, 90s...always rulin'!!! ;-)

  • God, I used to love this game can't believe how primitive it looks now.

  • primitive but still funny!! anyway it's one of the most sophisticated game for Speccy :-)

  • The Spectrum version of CHASE H.Q. was ace! It was possibly one of the best arcade conversions for that platform. Even on 48K there was still some cool stuff in it (no speech, though, and the sound wasn't as good as the 128K version showing here, but the tune on the menu screen was cool).

  • yes i have to give thanks to the programmer who made this Megagame

  • i wanna hear the coooool high score table music again!!!!

  • Oh I feel so old now!!!

  • Its great to see this game again i had it when i was

8 years old, over 20 years ago!!! Long live the Spectrum!

  • One of the few games where even I will admit that the Spectrum version is by far the best of the home computer versions- even the mighty Commodore 64 doesn't do this game as well as the Speccy!

  • Yes, the c64 version looks like a raw "copy/paste" of speccy version. I'm don't understand why Ocean didn't make a better port|game for this platform

  • Me encantó este juego :)

  • Para mi el mejor

  • rofl, giddie up boi!
