Her fiance's husband just called off the wedding rather abruptly and Clara thinks it her fault, that there is something wrong with her. Her fiance's husband noticed something she scribbled on her marriage license application and it freaked him out.
Unmelodic isn't really the right term, but I know what you mean. The music doesn't follow standard pop or rock chord progressions like many Bway shows, it's far more akin to the "classical" tradition. Someone else said neoromaticism which I think is spot on. He composed this show with stylistic references from composers like Puccini or Barber ( Anyone else TOTALLY hear Barber?)
But also, Guettel's harmonic language is much larger - he has a bigger vocabulary - than many other writers. They may have it, but perhaps they just don't use it as much as he does in his music.
Interesting interview with Guettel on the new music box (dot org)
Oh boy, Katie's "something is wrong with ME" ... gets me eveyr time. And of course, Vicki owns this song, as she does the role of Margaret in general!
I'm really confused--why did they all leave? :/ It's after Dinner where she had her tirade--did they just get the hell out of there as soon as possible?
It makes more sense if you see the entire play instead of just these songs on Youtube. I was confused too, until I found the play in it's entirety on google videos.
I just had to drop by and say that broadwaypixie1983 made an excellent point oabout Clara's 'condition'. I think the fact that Clara does in fact have the ability to recognise and voice things that others are too blind or too afraid to do/say shows a maturity and capability that can't be denied, so the extent of her 'disability' may well be less than both her doctors and her parents assumed. That's not to say they did the WRONG thing by her, but mabye too much 'killing with kindness'
I am still kinda confused. Did that lady not kiss Fabrizzio? And if she did, why would Clara get wierd looks for getting upset? Is she supposed to be slow, or something?
Clara was kicked in the head by the pony as Margaret describes here. She suffered brain trauma, and is subsequently "off". They don't go into details, but she is child-like in many ways.
Ok, so for Christmas I got the sondtrack to this, and I had never heard of it before. I am kinda confused. So, Clara has a problem, like slight insanity or something? And she is in love with Fabrizzio (I KNOW I didnt spell that right lol) well anyway, so there is also nother couple? How are the 2 realted? Also do Clara and Fab... get together and get married? Thanks!!
there are sort of two other couples who's story line is going on in this. There is the American mother and father and the Italian father, sort of a love hate triangle. And the other couple is the italian brother and sister-in-law, she loves him but he cheats, blah blah. They do get married!!
She's not insane. In another recording, the pony was rented for her 12th birthday. She was kicked in the head and the doctors said she'd continue to develop physically normally, but that mentally she'd never develop past about 12 years old.
One aspect that wasn't mentioned that yes she was kicked in the head but in the play the mother is very protective of Clara, she babys her and doesn't ever treat her the age that she is. So Clara could also just be naive. So in the play it leaves the audience to wonder if getting kicked by the horse really did that much damage or it the mother was the one who created a lot of it herself. Its never really answered but i think the point is people can love each other past their differences.
Keep watching this over and over again! I love it! That note she hits! She Is AMAZING!!!!! <3

@SingSwing17 Wait -- I wrote "her fiance's husband" twice. I meant to say "her fiance's father" both times. Sorry.

you're referring to the use of dissonant versus consonant intervals

@gmr2broadway I completely hear Samuel Barber! Especially in the "Hysteria" scene in Act one.

She was kicked in the head by a horse when she was younger....so she's just a little special. I think they get married.
