Watching this I'm reminded why the man had such an impact on me back then, when I first watched this. It's classic Simon. Bless him.
Anyone out there (forgive me) who knows what I mean will also understand the idea that there were some of us who viewed this man and his band as a sort of religion. It went beyond simple Duranie-ism..Simon's word, in particular for me, were gospel. And I agree with you caclasch. God bless the internet.

Wow, can Simon read poetry or what?! He makes me melt!! I remember this happening and became intensely enthralled with yachting afterward. I'm so thankful that he and the rest of the crew were rescued.
I know what he means about the seduction of the sea; I almost drowned as a toddler in Florida leaving me terrified of deep water but yet I still crave the ocean - to have the wind, sun and mist carry you onward...
Thanks for confirming my memories. I remember watching this when it originally aired and becoming very excited about the opening of "The Living Seas" at Epcot. (Was interested in becoming an oceanographer at the time.) I specifically recall Simon talking about the trapped shipmate and how they had to free him. I think that gave me a new respect for him; along with the fact that he came across like the cool English teacher that we all wished we had.
Being a huge Simon fan from a million years ago, I remember when this was first aired. I remember it, because I missed it when it aired. My mom told me she saw Simon on t.v. reciting the "I must go down to the seas again" poem. Of course she couldn't remember anything else about it, let alone the name of the show. Oh well, I thought, I'll never know what that was about.... But here it is! God bless the internet. And thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you for posting this. Wonderful! I used to love John Taylor when I was young, but in the later days, I found Simon is very charming. He can sing and he can write poems. He should be a very interesting man.
This is the only time where I have seen Simon talking in depth about that incredibly frightening time in his life. I'm sure it changed him in some very profound ways. I am such a fan of the band and am so happy they have reunited. Long live Duran Duran!
I'm sure we will never forget the day we all heard the news of Simon's boat capsizing. We'll remember where we were and what we were doing.

What a voice for poetry! So soothing and captivating. Would be good at narrating or theatre.

Thank you for sharing this. I wonder if Simon wrote the song "Land" after this encounter?
It is really interesting to hear Simon's perspective and how he is still in love with the sea which almost took his life.
