I practise wing chun under Sifu Jim fung tsu shong tin lineage in Australia and we use very similar looking techniques in our char chong ( breaking the guard) drills looks very similar and very effective great work
they say that wing chun is heavely influenced by muay thai.Till now I couldn't see that similarity, now that I saw your videos it's obviously similar with osmt...however wing chun has denegerated over the years, especially the "european" branch.Your videos really helped to "unlock" some moves that are hidden in the forms.....thx
Hey Donnie, I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time for putting these vids on the web man. I quit smoking back in 06 and started packing on the pounds. I was about 190 when I quit and a month ago I weighed in at 330. I came across your vids and started doing several of the shadow kicks and a few other techniques you have on here. I gotta say man I weighed in about 6 hours ago. I'm down to 295. It wasnt that hard either. I tried a couple other vids "Not Yours" and nearly passed out.
good work on showing "bong" block "bid" closing "bud" pushing away "burd" opening. This is some of the basic blocking techniques of muay boran. keep up the good work :)
I'm glad to see someone else respect the elbows. I think that because most martial arts styles don't permit their use in sparring they are neglected. I learned something quite similar to what you are doing in your videos in China. My teacher trained in Sanda (like Muay Thai but more heavily focused on throwing) and cross-trained in boxing and Muay Thai at some point. I loved what I was learning so much that I base my own "style" almost completely on stand-up grappling and elbows.
I see a wing chun "bong sao" in there. I see a lot of relations and similarities from all types of martial arts, making me wonder about what influenced what.
My question is why even try and get in close like that? Seems more logical to just gunt an arm, aim for the fists, and forearm muscles. Using the radius and ulnar bones, from the elbow joints up to the wrists, to destroy the opponents weapons. Land a good elbow strike to any of the bones of the hand and that's a broken bone. Just seems like there's not reason to specifically close in to the opponent unless the fight just ends up there de facto.
@landgabriel I guess what his trying to say is use it when your are happen to be that close. You can't throw a kick, or possibly a punch so, only left to do is a knee but in this case he used an elbow. Your are not trying to go close just so you could do that technique. Just in a certain point in a fight.
This looks very much like wing chun. We call that technique a bong sao, though we use it differently. I like the potential of integrating kung fu and muay thai. The fact that the gap is bridged does help neutralize the boxer though, and that plays to our strength of knees and elbows.
@hitchikingalaxy yes it looks very much like wing chun. BUT the "Bong sao" here, he's holding the other guy's hand. The opening flower technique is similar to wing chun's tan sao, my favorite technique :)
Why does the two martial art styles look so similar? They were invented by great people, and great mind think alike.
What can I say, I can't speak.... the .goom thing is a nod to an inside joke among some friends, But my tongue-tied bit there at 1:30, I have no excuse. I just couldn't form the words. And that, my friend, is why I'll never be a news anchor.
Of all the bullshit videos floating around on youtube, I have finally found someone that has some decent knowledge and is actually interesting to watch. Good work.
your technique SUX !!!!! you are to close to your oponents first fist !! if you came to me so close i WILL punch you as much as i can.. THIS IS NOT GOOD TECHNIQUE !! you should to think about how to attack from bigger distance ;-) this is not good !! i can hit with me knee if you will be so close ;-) think about it man
so muay thai CAN be praticed not objectifying competition, but can be approached with a deeper, self defense means. I liked it. I´m starting my classes!
nice vid. enjoyed watching. question though.. how would this work against an ace southpaw orthodox who has excellent speed and timing all day, who can load up with a 1-2 that doesn't rest.
Possibly in a sport context, but this strategy (and the close proximity) is ideal for high risk operators, EP profs, someone is in your face in a bar.
that video was great! I got a question for you.......
How do you get past the reach of someone who is taller than you and knows how to use it(his reach)
I was sparring this guy from another gym and he kept hitting me as I tried to get past his guard and reach! What do you suggest i do next time? is there any technique in particular I can use?
Thanks a lot and keep doing these vids I appreciate them.........peace!
try and time your counter attacks cos if he misses its gonna take him longer to regain a staionay position ro whatever if they go for like a round house move back as qucik as u can if he misses as he's bringing his leg back rush him and try to catch him off guard if that dosnt work try to go for low attacks and take away his legs thats what i would do
Develop a fast front kick, not only to be able to use it in the scenario you describe - I will tell you what I mean. Generally whatever you do, do it fast, but NOT at the expense of technique.
You can use a fast front kick simultaneously with your block. If you try to approach a taller opponent, your guard must be up. If the taller guy punches you, then as you block kick him since his arm will be stretched to punch you. That means one shield less...
These techniques are similar in nature to wing chun (and jkd), however, where wing chung drives straight forward, when going to the outside I drive in at a 45 degree angle instead of stepping straight in. Almost all highly effective fighting techniques are universal, not exclusive to any one style.
This type of clinch range fighting is also called trapping and is a foundation of another popular style - Wing Chun. In fact, Wing Chun and Muay Thai clinching go hand in hand very nicely.
i've seen lots other vids for defense with different martial arts styles but the old school muay thai/boran is by far one of the most effective and practical i've seen. nice vids
So you're saying that its beter to stay arms length from an opponent with a longer reach than you? I'd much rather get deep inside his range where the advantage of his reach is negated. Also - the these techniques are meant to help end a fight as fast as possible, not to square off and box it out with someone, but shit away if you feel the need.
effective technique... but someting to take note of here. Good boxer would never guard with his hands in a position like tat. Instead, his hands would be much closer to his body... so its gonna be quite difficult to perform the techniques shown in this vid. Not saying the tech is not good, it is extremely effective against noobish fighters, juz tat it cant be used in all circumstances.
This technique is more effective in a street fight situation where you realize that you're going to have to fight the guy. It's a great first strike and much more effective than you may think, but i agree with you in respect to using this against a boxer in competition.
You can use it against a boxer who guards close to his body. The difference is, instead of jerking open his guard, you check it against his body using one hand so his punch is jammed while your elbow slashes across his face.
Great video im studying Muay Thai Boran, and it is alot different from the usual stuff on youtube e.g the sport side. Its nice to watch an old style muay thay video =]
this is that traditional, made for killin shit! this is the good shit, hard to find someone that will train it though...fuckin lethal man! i wish i could find someone that would be willing to train me and acctually knows the old school stuff
Seems good, but a fast kicker (can't imagine a knee there, when you do that, ouch!! :-) )or someone who moves well can stop it, it seems to me.
But give me your opinion...
You think it should be used more often to speed up the KO when facing an inferior opponent? Equally good or better fighters may use it against you, from a point of view. Of course, the faster and more accurate you are, the better it is.
I have a feel it will work better if it is not your 1st move...
