@SeedofCreed Gee. Why do you think your voice is too deep? A lotta basses have sung this role. You might not sound like Kiley, but you can put your own stamp on the role:) --
Where are all the delusional old men who venture forth with a decent moral mindset, to help the helpless instead of taking advantage of others misfortune.
I heard this again for the first time a few minutes ago, and I'm once again inspired by the words and remember that I was supposed to still be reaching that unreachable star. Last ounce of courage here.
@jeodpsg The windmills were giants...horrible monsters who threatened the peace and freedom of that good land. Don Quixote fought bravely against those evil foes.
DON QUIXOTE Hear me now Oh thou bleak and unbearable world, Thou art base and debauched as can be; And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee! I am I, Don Quixote, The Lord of La Mancha, þ My destiny calls and I go, And the wild winds of fortune Will carry me onward, Oh whithersoever they blow. Whithersoever they blow, Onward to glory I go!
I saw Kiley in a road company of MLM in Boston, in the 80s. At the end, when he dies, I heard sobbing all around me. Years later, he was in a tv movie. Joanne Woodward plays his wife, a writer with Alzheimers. He reads a speech for her at an award ceremony, because she is unable. Just reading a letter, he delivered a great performance. It must have been from classical training from doing soliloquies.
The great Richard Kiley! The best Don Quixote ever. Although, this version edits out Sancho's part of the song. I've seen a few versions of this on Broadway. Unfortunately the Kiley performance was before my time, but I heard his cd version a thousand time or so and it's the best. Oh and be forewarned. Do not go near the awful movie version starring Peter O'Toole & Sophia Loren. Neither star could sing.
@diddymuck Thank you for saying this. I was appalled by the movie. Why couldn't they have cast Mr. Kiley. He IS Don Quixote. He appeared in many Broadway shows including Kismet, wherein he sang the role of the Caliph.
@fjccommish The reason I didn't like O'Toole was that he couldn't sing. The role of Don Quixote is one of the few Broadway roles designed for someone with a really good singing voice. Many Broadway roles can be sing by non-singers. Lee Marvin's role in the film version of Paint Your Wagon for instance. This is all my humble opinion though. What's important is that you enjoyed O'Toole. He's a great actor, just not a singer.
@TheKenTerry Though drunk you may be, you are correct. Most versions of this musical use Sancho's, "I'm Sancho! Yes, I'm Sancho! I'll follow my master 'til the end! I'll tell all the world proudly, 'I'm his squire; I'm his friend!'"
great video-- i love the painting done in that rustic red with the sunflowers and the long, thin horses. i was hoping you could tell me who the artist is. thanks alot!
I'm quite glad this is uploaded, and I'm rating it a 5, but please do us a courtesy and upload the uncut version, the one that actually involved the Sancho Panza part and didn't end abruptly because you cut in a previous version of the chorus.
I've been looking for this Richard Kiley rendition forever on You Tube. Don't know how I've missed it all this time. Thanks for posting this.
His performance is superb. Excellent voice, just made the part his own. He was also a good actor in non-musical things, too. Really liked him in everthing.
Oh, my God!! I was searching for kiley EVERY day practically on this site too! But no one had the good sense to put this vastly superior performance up until the wonderful officerdibbles. Thank you so much for posting this officerdib. And TheDi, I'm glad some else has the good taste to love Richard Kiley and recognize him as one of the best singers/actors of all time:) XO, Katie
Thank you for putting this up, Kiley is by far my favorite Don Quixote. His voice is one f the most beautiful I've ever heard. Mitchell I like far better in other roles, and even though I heard his version of this first, I've never quite liked him in this specific role.
As much as I like Brian Stokes Mitchell, he wasn't really old enough to play the part (or at least didn't look old enough, even with the stage makeup). He also moved like a younger man trying to play an older man. Richard Kiley, however, inhabited the part, body and soul. It would be terrific to see Stokes Mitchell try this one again in a few years!
is there a way i could use this as a video for part of an mulit media thing i'm doing on Don Quijote for spanish class? It's about how the story inspired a lot of other things. It's due by the end of the week so if i could please get back to me. if i don't hear from you i wont use it. thanks, it's very good.
This mid 1960's production was not filmed as far as I can establish. However, I possess a stereo vinyl recording of it. Believe me every aspect of the production is simply marvellous. You would really love it! Regrettably I haven't the ability to transfer this to CD, neither have I located it on CD. Perhaps you can track CD or even film down. I would be eternally grateful.
Do you have a copy of that production? I would hope that you would share it. It would be very special for those of us who have only had the opportunity to see it on Broadway.
I possess 12 inch vinyl analogue records, am unable to transfer them to CD. Man of La Mancha was produced concurrently on Broadway and in London. It is lamentable fact, the US dislikes similar foreign productions playing at the same time as their own.
NZ is a backwater for such music. I suspect you can locate these CD's of Keith Michel much easier than can I.
This song is really good to appreciate, especially while in a slide show of artistic images, ya, I may only be 14, but I enjoyed the movie a lot, I saw it in Spanish class, I'm the only kid who didn't fall asleep! Hahahaha!
I don't agree. I must Brian Stoke Mitchell was much better for his voice is acknowledgedly better then his with all do with respect to your opinion and to Kiley.
there is only one Man of La Mancha, and its Richard Kiley. though others came after him, and did a good job. only RK is the true Don Quixote De La Mancha....
Maybe with the looks or the acting but not in the vocals. Just because he came first it does not mean he is better. If Brian Stokes Mitchell had come first you would say he was the best which I would agree with.
Mitchell has a fuller singing voice but Richard Kiley had one of the best and most recognizable speaking voices in modern American history. In addition to his 50 year theater, movie and TV career he narrated hundreds of TV shows. I don't know if you were around then but the original Man of La Mancha was a sensation on Broadway. Kiley was a chief reason for that and won the Tony Award. That was one of the first shows I saw and is still one of the best.
Yes but singing was all I was judging them on. I am not a big fan of Kiley and haven't seen him anything but this and that is why I can only judge him upon his singing voice. But maybe he has a great speaking voice. But then again many people have recognizable speaking voices and it becomes a question of opinion on who's the best is. :)
