once you become advanced in moeller, it looks just like what gene is doing...Its less exaggerated in videos where someone isn't trying to show you how to do it..ya know what im sayin?
ScreamBLoddyGore, if you had any idea what the Moeller technique is you would know that the technique enables you to play rolls with one hand (the Moeller can easily be phrased in triplets and 16ths). He was hitting 4 notes with each hand using the Moeller technique. Once you've mastered it on both hands you can easily apply it to lightning fast rolls.
I recommend you watch Skinny Tiger Fatty Dragon and Enter the Fat Dragon because Sammo does some damage with a pair of sticks that even Gene Hoglan would be impressed with. ;)
He really does kick ass and he's a truly fantastic fight choreographer whose skills of stunt co-ordination are easily on par with Gene Hoglan's drumming.
Sammo is also a genuinely great director and I think he's made films whose cinematic quality is akin to Gene's songwriting.
Interesting piece of trivia: he was originally going to be the action director for the Star Wars prequels since George Lucas is a huge fan of him.

raiderfan, have you ever played on a triggered kit vs. a non triggered? Now, I can only speak for myself, but whenever people threw triggers on my kicks. things such as dynamics mattered less, the sound was consistent no matter how I played, so long as the notes were in time.
I met him in 95, he was much thinner. He's my fave. I like how he doesnt sound so triggered out. I've had enough of "tappy" drummers who sound huge with triggers. Gene can do it for real.
whats the difference, just because they have triggers doesnt mean they're not doing it for real. They're actually moving that fast but when you go fast enough obviously you're going to have to tap, like the drummer from As Blood Runs Black, he taps but he's still godly fucking fast on the pedals.
Wrong. Triggers eliminate the need to play with power. The faster you play the lower the volume, and since most metal drummers use light pedals like Axis' they can't get any power out of their kicks. Instead of using heavier pedals, or using heavy beaters and/or beater weights they trigger the kick so they can get away with barely tapping the drum. Guys like Phil Selway trigger their kick for electronic sounds, but unless you're playing electronic samples with your band triggers are cheating.
even without my counterweights i get plenty of power with my axis pedals. they almost fly back and hit the top of my feet, and you can pretty much get them to feel any way you want.
cheating is such a dirty word.
plus, using triggers makes me hit the bass drum better, by not resting the beaters on the head. the triggers pick up any extra crap. so between playing "softer" and having to clean up footwork a good deal.
I'm betting that my Eliminators and Yamaha direct drives have more power than your Axis pedals. Cheating is violating rules deliberately, hitting softly and triggering a loud sound is just that. Naturally playing super fast will lower your volume, but leaving your kick unmuffled or lightly muffled (with head choice, not pillows) will maximize the volume. And it's much, much harder to play an unmuffled, untriggered kick than a triggered kick with a shitload of pillows in it.
Gene was the one who introduced Nile to George, the two are buddies which is pretty fucking sick and when I saw Nile George was thanking Gene for doing it.

He was hitting 4 notes with each hand using the Moeller technique. Once you've mastered it on both hands you can easily apply it to lightning fast rolls.

Trust me, you'll be hooked onto Sammo.
He really does kick ass and he's a truly fantastic fight choreographer whose skills of stunt co-ordination are easily on par with Gene Hoglan's drumming.
Sammo is also a genuinely great director and I think he's made films whose cinematic quality is akin to Gene's songwriting.
Interesting piece of trivia: he was originally going to be the action director for the Star Wars prequels since George Lucas is a huge fan of him.

Thanks for sharing! Not often you get to see footage of 'Mean Gene the Machine' from back in his Dark Angel days.This would've been on their last tour,for "Time Does Not Heal".By that point,Gene was also writing all their music & lyrics by himself! I saw his clinic a few months back & he has so much power,yet such a laid-back playing technique! One of the most important & respected drummers in metal,& he is truly one of metal's most unique characters!

raiderfan, have you ever played on a triggered kit vs. a non triggered? Now, I can only speak for myself, but whenever people threw triggers on my kicks. things such as dynamics mattered less, the sound was consistent no matter how I played, so long as the notes were in time.

I met him in 95, he was much thinner. He's my fave. I like how he doesnt sound so triggered out. I've had enough of "tappy" drummers who sound huge with triggers. Gene can do it for real.

whats the difference, just because they have triggers doesnt mean they're not doing it for real. They're actually moving that fast but when you go fast enough obviously you're going to have to tap, like the drummer from As Blood Runs Black, he taps but he's still godly fucking fast on the pedals.

Triggers are also necessary past a certain speed with some kits... commonly on the double pedal single drum setups.
The bass drum skin does not rebound before the next pedal hit and so affects the sound majorly, triggers eliminate the need for the skin to rebound.

Wrong. Triggers eliminate the need to play with power. The faster you play the lower the volume, and since most metal drummers use light pedals like Axis' they can't get any power out of their kicks. Instead of using heavier pedals, or using heavy beaters and/or beater weights they trigger the kick so they can get away with barely tapping the drum. Guys like Phil Selway trigger their kick for electronic sounds, but unless you're playing electronic samples with your band triggers are cheating.

even without my counterweights i get plenty of power with my axis pedals. they almost fly back and hit the top of my feet, and you can pretty much get them to feel any way you want.
cheating is such a dirty word.
plus, using triggers makes me hit the bass drum better, by not resting the beaters on the head. the triggers pick up any extra crap. so between playing "softer" and having to clean up footwork a good deal.

I'm betting that my Eliminators and Yamaha direct drives have more power than your Axis pedals. Cheating is violating rules deliberately, hitting softly and triggering a loud sound is just that. Naturally playing super fast will lower your volume, but leaving your kick unmuffled or lightly muffled (with head choice, not pillows) will maximize the volume. And it's much, much harder to play an unmuffled, untriggered kick than a triggered kick with a shitload of pillows in it.
