great job on getting the population up! turtles are one of my favorite reptiles, hatchlings are so vulnerable only a small fraction will reach adult hood i hope there are programs like this for all turtles that have declining numbers, i m going to check my area and see if i can get involved!

The pond behind our apartment building has red-eared sliders in it. I think someone just released their pets when they moved. They're fun though, I see them all the time in summer. I wish I could feed them but they always flee when I get too close.

@J10Jaillan .....Do you think they've been hand-fed on a spoon? No. The zoo is more responsible than that. They put food in the water and the turtles grab the food. That's basically what the turtles KEEP doing once they're released.

I just recently picked up a turtle that was size of a quarter while I was mowing grass around my pond and let him ride around with me while mowing and he was really shy kept tucked away.....but after mowing held him in my hand and told him "I better let ya go back in the pond" and he actually stuck his head out then and winked and tried to talk to me!!! I saw his throat move....I just think he said "thank you"......so I'm thinking they can actually understand what we are saying)
