@MrHoppers002 He tried many weaves before and after the Original Series. There's a blog dedicated to the history of Bill's head furniture. GOOGLE for "Shatner's Toupee"...
Everyone does realize that this one was directed by a guy named "Paul Stanley", right? Not teh KISS Paul Stanley though, he'd have been in his early twenties when this one came out!
shtaners isnt just doing a kirk. if you watch TOS the character of kirk is alot more easy going and definately would not talk about his past so casualy (although this newbie trekie may be wrong)
Followup to Vernon Moore: It's likely his remains were discovered (and subsequently buried) by what I think was a British Army Expedition through that area (1953).
So he would have been buried in something of a "John Doe" fashion--"We don't know who he is, or how he came to be here, but we will give him a Christian Burial," etc....
The wreckage of the "Lady Be Good" was only found about xix years later (1959)--and so no one had made the right connection back in 1953.
IMO, the best moment in the film comes when the ghost crew are all sitting together, thinking they had been left behind after all (the "living" military had just concluded their investigation and had departed the scene of the wreck)...and then Brad David (Elmo) suddenly rears up with a look of surprise and horror and says: "they're...TOUCHING me!
They had just discovered his body and were reclaiming him--putting him into a body bag....
A wonderful performance...that scared the **** out of me!
FYI, this film is available from "Robert's Hard to Find Videos" on DVD for $25 US.
The inspiration for the missing "crewman under lying under the tail" at the end of the film came from the fact that Sgt. Vernon L. Moore's remains (alone) had still not been discovered when this film was made.
It turns out his body probably WAS recovered (and laid to rest) by a British expedition some years beforehand, except that no one knew who he was, or how he had come to be in that remote desert location.
This haunting film was based on the VERY TRUE story of the American WWII B-24 bomber "Lady Be Good." It's the investigation of the wreckage (and the ghosts who populate it) which is the focus of the film, and it was very much a film which was "made in it's own time" in this regard: The ending focuses on one "lost" crewman (who might or might not have been found--the film leaves this to your imagination).
I believe the missing crewman probably WAS found (and laid to rest) after all.
it's no surprise that some people say he looks cheesy and hammy, probably all the pizzas he lived on during his time living in a pick up truck with his dog in 69/70. I'm glad fortunes changed for him.
this is awesome! i found this b/c i'm looking for this movie online. this is one of the great forgotten tv movies of all time!! a sort of trippy concept of dead soldiers who don't know their really dead and a survivor who wants to cover up how they really died. does anyone know if there's more of this out there?
shatner should've kept the jim kirk toupee.

what I never understood how that boring languid Vince Edwards became the lead in a prime time series. I would vote for Kildare anytime over Ben Casey

Wow, I have always defended Shatner against those who constantly call him cheesy and hammy. But the ham and cheese is sure cooking in this one.
7beers 4 years ago
it's not cheesy and hammy it's just the most hilarious acting style ever invented by a sentient being I could watch him for 24 hours a day
