I absolutely agree, much more is needed than just core work for back pain. The strengthening component is only one aspect of the recovery process.
I also agree that stiffening or hardening an area does not constitute healing and growth.
It's not meant to.
It's meant to stimulate and enable your body to work the way it was designed to work using anatomy to buttress against various potentially damaging forces.
Healing is actually a sub-cellular physiological action.
In once sense, yes, you could get a similar effect from push ups. However, while holding the isometric position on the front plank, the duration that you're challenging those specific core muscles is greater than when you're moving through push ups. In a very basic sense, think of it as taking momentum away.
Not bad but definitely not the best exercise for low back injury and/or pain.
Much more is needed than what these days is referred to as the "core", but a reasonable start.
Until prioper strengthening exercise is understood and performed little or nothing will change.
