So Homer was trying to show the futility of war and NOT glamorizing it as heroic? I think that's great because when I was reading Rosemary Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy (I plan to read a text version later) I was really upset how these two great peoples were destroying themselves over honor.
@JonathanTopping How we all came from monkeys instead of ancient human history, ancient Black and Amerind empires (that were actually White), Slavery instead of Early American History, The Holocaust instead of WW2, how to "go green" instead of physics, and reading assignments include "Anne Frank's Diary", The color purple and Heather Has Two Mommies.
@guitarsforever You are totally right, even Menelaus isn't fighting for Helen to some extent, he too is trying to claim kleos, an important part of the heroic code which was followed to some extent by every main character of the epic
I am glad to see you spreading the knowledge of the fabled Trojan War. I'm 17 and I just read The Iliad and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just apprising you of this though, I believe you spelled machicolation erroneously.
Professor Harrison says that the main reason for the Trojan war is Helen (which is what most people believe). But when Menelaus went to his brother Agamemnon for help in attacking Troy for taking his wife, Agamemnon saw this as an opportunity to become a legend (to be spoken about). Apart from Menelaus, no one in this war is fighting for Helen. (At least in the beginning) Achilles is fighting for "kleos" (glory) so that he will be remembered as a great warrior.

Thank you so much for this. This is by so far the best and easiest to follow narrative of The Iliad by so far. Other videos don't use visual depictions or simpler terms as you do. Again thank you so much and peace be with you.
@presbarkeep Actually he is the son of Actors Rex Harrison ( My Fair Lady ) and Lilli Palmer ( author, painter, actress ) and the brother of Noel Harrison ( Girl From UNCLE, writer of Academy Award winning song "The Windmills of Your Mind ). His mother too was quite a genius as is evident in her books and interviews.
ok, i have a doubt, i read the illiad, but it end on hectors rescue, where i can read about the horse or the fall of troy, achilles dead??? thnk you !
i have 3 copies of the illiad, and in one of them it lists how many ships each of the greek rulers brought with them. but i stopped counting after over a thousand ships.
2- embellishments are unavoidable over so many centuries. first Bards sang it for hundreds of years, then it was written down. and therefore, many people added or removed things as it suited them.
my theory:>> As the Mycenaens attempt to take Troys defenses, a short sharp earthquake topples the towers and walls to a great extant. the Mycenaens wait a bit till all the rubble stops falling, then assault whats left and take the remains of Troy! Out of gratitude they erect a (solid) wooden horse in honor of Poseiden. ......the hollow horse version just doesnt make sense, it would have been to risky. the Trojans were not fools!
