Detroit was cool back when it was still minding its own business and making its own music and ideas, free from the commercial outside world. From what I can see the broke ass city that I once knew has become a product that can be sold - exploited- commercialized. There was a time when you were the only one around for miles cause nobody gave a damn about the place.
Artists and Architects from the outside world want to jump on the Detroit bandwagon and make some headlines but will they match the freshness and creativity of the originators or just water it down with their pre-programmed minds?
Obama didn't save shyt!! 14 trillion in debt! Yea the only thing he saved was Detroit not being the only American city to look like a ghost town- coming to YOUR town next!
I visited in mid-2011. The Packard plant was really spectacular, one of the highlights of my trip. I 've been to the Parthenon but the Packard plant was better. The video gives some idea of what it's like, but seeing it in person is much more impressive. It is vast. Some buildings are 6 stories high, with great views from the roof.
@parvlog That would be in America, the great city of Detroit, NOT. It's a horrible city. But it's in the US, in Michigan, about 40 minutes away from me
@vnslykrx Its not a horrible city. I live in mich and have been to detroit many times. Never had any problems. If you go to any major city you will find abandoned buildings. There are just a few more in the D. lol.
I did a photo shoot at the plant last week. I love to see how it was look like 50-60 years ago.. Its an elegant place.. I was keep saying WOAH!! looking around..
it's a shame what has happened to once great industrial town.I;m from macedonia,a country in Europe and I shouldn't be saying this but can't the people of Detroit rebuild their town like it was 20 years ago? It's really bad buildings like the packard plant, studebaker and michigan central station be ruined.I saw about Detroit on youtube and I got intrested in what caused the abandonment problem and I learned that the problem was economy crysis and black people
@adisakoman ...that's funny you say black people. The residents of Detroit Re-Elected mayor Kwame Kilpatrick into a second term, after he was caught spending city funds for personal use. Millions of dollars were stolen, and the mayor was operating a "Pay to Play" government. I agree totally, most black people in Detroit are uneducated, and have a crime driven mentality. That is one major reason Detroit is such bad shape.
@adisakoman Not 20 years ago. It was a mess even then. The city has been in decline since 1961, when a liberal mayor took over. The riots of 1967 and oil crisis of 1973 were the final straw for Detroit
@adisakoman It was a shithole 20 years ago too. The city has been going downhill for 60 years now. You would have to see the city first hand to realize how bad it is. Pretty much the entire city would have to be torn down. Detroit doesn't even have money to make a dent in the 12,000 abandoned homes that need to be demolished. Let alone the buildings and occupied houses that are falling apart.
Doesn't seem like a safe place to go. Seeing how it is in Detroit there are probably bums that live there that really don't have anything to lose and wouldn't hesitate to stab you and take your coat. Also, prolly some gangstas waiting for a couple of white kids from the suburbs to rob :)
I love Historic places but this building is not stable it would cost double to renovated it is better of being torn down would be a great sight for a replica but instead of a factory it should be studios and offices
I have heard all the Tool and Dye equipment was sold to the Soviet Union after the plant closed. It was installed in the Kama River Truck factory and is still in use. I would love to explore this old factory, but I would be terrified some of the predatory animals that roam downtown Detroit would jump me. Perhaps most of them are nocturnal, but still.
that place is so nasty forreal me and my uncle went up there to take pictures inside and theres just so much abandoned stuff there like there was a boat there forreal its very interest tho
@zur2122 It's a beetle. if you want to see the video on how it got there, go to this youtube channel, bagaauwk, scroll down to buy american, you'll see that bug splatter!
@BlueHeavenBound its not the country , its just detroit . if this building had been anywhere else , it would have been torn down immediately after the fire .
Detroit has had a corrupt socialist government since the 60's. They're funding by OUR taxes. While the politicians, city leaders, and the UNIONS line their wallets and promise, WAIT, I mean brainwash an uneducated, unemployed, unemployable, group of people with free everything while they suffer and circle the drain of society. If anyone likes Obamaism, take a GOOD LOOK. This is it! Front and Center. When the money dries up, businesses and working class leave that's what your left with...
Unreal, The more pathetic thing is there's thousands more like this and over a hundred thousand abandoned residential structures. The building hasn't produced anything in over 50 years and the City doesn't even know who owns it.
Is anyone around to comment on working there in the day. Walking down those stairs and past those offices when they were busy? Too darn bad. Question - What was that table set up all about, anyone know? Is that the visitor's center for tours of the plant or what
@poisonapple16 Blame the car making industry for not acting sooner. Blame the Catholics who write the auto magazines and trashed the Protestant owned American cars in favor of the Catholic owned German cars. After all, Germany and Japan, a Catholic lead war, was defeated by a Protestant lead country. Blame it on those who snubbed their noses at the American automobile.
