However, I think it would have gotten a better response if a better orchestra performed it. Hopefully, Durand at least learned he needs to have complex pieces like Athanor performed by only high quality professional orchestras.
I just watched this live at UW. Though this recording is better than the performance I attended I have to wonder why modern composers feel they need to have a "cool" idea that not only supports the piece but also tries to justify its existence. The idea of "Athanor" is cool. The music... uh... not so much. It has some nice moments but overall it's extremely painful. At the end of the performance tonight someone in the audience actually said, "That was horrible!" Many people chose not to clap.
@kjm777777 People like you are the reason classical music is in decline. There is no need to "justify" the existence of a piece of music - particularly a beautiful one! A poetic title or program makes the experience even more beautiful. Just because a handful of idiots decided not to applaud a performance of a bunch of 2nd-rate students does not mean that the piece is lacking.
@entechoi The decline of classical music is hardly at risk here unless, of course, Athanor is considered to be a part of it. Athanor is intelligent music and belongs to a more academic side of contemporary music without a doubt but beautiful? The first half of the piece is like nails sliding down a chalkboard. There are some really nice moments as I stated earlier but the idea of "Athanor" doesn't appeal to me and certainly didn't appeal to most everyone else who attended the concert at UW.
The current post is a semblance of what goes on in my mind much of the time. I'm amazed you captured such a private moment! You aren't reading my brain-waves are you?

The lush and mysterious orchestration is incredibly gorgeous. I give 5 stars without any hesitation.

It's a fascinating piece nonetheless.
Keep up the good work!

I found that book on google. !!OMG!! It is indeed a brain sizzler, to the extent that I probably won't even bother reading it
(or understanding it, at the least)

Duh. Just type in "Durand athanor", it's like the fourth result. If I found it easily, you should too. Google books

This is the best orchestral piece I've heard since... hmmm, perhaps since having heard something by Kabeláč.

I didn't want to believe the description before listening to this, but it gets 5 stars easily. Good piece.
