@FlyingOverTr0ut Oh, but I hate this trailer. What a bastardized version of "Action! Suspense! Hair-raising sunts!" thing that tries to nudge the movie in the direction of looking like every generic movie trailer for an action movie.
@RayWilliamJohansen Actually, France has one of the most illustrious military records in all the world, however since the dawn of the 20th century, they have been of course, less fortunate
As for their dislike for the USA...its probably because they sold half of it for a few cents an acre ;)
@RayWilliamJohansen so Napoleon was never Emperor? They don't hate the US. they just don't feel like taking racist comments like yours. they're not gonna be bullied by the US and they'll tell them frankly when their policies are a load of shit.
One of the best movies I've seen. Absolutely THE best trailer. Gives nothing away, totally makes you want to see this movie. Kudos to the people over at the Criterion Collection- they've got an artist working for them.
@misterpeaky My dad's great grandfather left Alsace for the US after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (as did many from Alsace-Lorraine) and thus didn't have to put up with anymore German hardships on the native population.
You may not have the slightest idea how depressing, scary, dark and sad this movie is. It's like seeing the original "Dawn of The Dead" cheering for the humans but knowing from the beginning that the zombie will win. It's like WWII never ended - eternal darkness. The fact was made in1969 just add to the horror.
It's an incredible film, probably the greatest made about resistance fighters. And before anyone asks, I've seen The Battle of Algiers and Ashes and Diamonds.
As a movie it is good, historically not so much. Phillipe escapes and is helped by a Petainist barber, they use a baron's estate as a base, Jardie in his large bourgeois home is leading their resistance network - all of this is quite a stretch and is why the French laughed at the movie, it is rather ridiculous.
@redhexagon I'm French and I think you should mind what you say a bit. The movie was not well received in my country because it was released in the aftermath of the May 1968 events and was suspected-wrongly-to be a a defense of De Gaulle and his regime, which was under domestic pressure at the time. The events depicted in the movie are entirely credible. The resistance was a multi-faceted movement, with people from all backgrounds and operated as an underground endeavour, hiding in plain sight.
@l3kei Have you read Ginette Vincendeau's book Jean-Pierre Melville: An American in Paris? I highly recommend it.
Melville is my favorite film auteur of the 1960's, and Le Doulos, Le Deuxieme Souffle, Le samouraï, and L'armée des ombres (Army of Shadows) are all masterpieces from that decade in my opinion. And 1956's Bob le Flambeur and 1970's Le cercle rouge are almost as good as his four great films of the 1960's. I hope the Criterion Collection releases a DVD of Leon Morin, Pretre.
@redhexagon the barber is not Petainist, the poster of Pétain was hung in cafés, restaurants, shops, streets... They did not do it as a matter of choice. And indeed some castels were used during the war. Resistance accepted people from all background, and this is particularly well shown in the film.
I'm liking the new Scorsese selects thing on Directv, he recommends so many great classics. This movie could pass as a modern movie, must of been way ahead of it's time.
Superb movie. I TRULY think that communists in the USA inhibited its release in my country because it didn't kiss commie ass in the story. The Cocos DID contribute to the resistance, their role not insignificant, but it wasn't solely theirs. This movie was not released in the United States until 2007. It is a masterpiece.
@yaknbo That's not why it wasn't released. The American film distributors decided not to carry it because of the controversy that surrounded the film in France. It was more of a conservative decision really. The American film board, knowing that the main group of people that would see the movie would be affluent liberals, the same group that sympathized with the resistance movement stirring in France, decided not to release it. It had nothing to do with American communists or socialists
@tehGR1ZZ It's not hard to find, search the internet, NYTimes article database, or even just look up this movie. You look like a moron when you attack educated viewpoints and don't offer any in return.
SagaraGunso ... go do some research buddy. You are talking a load of crap. Who do you think was getting all the information to the british so they could mount the invasion? Who was smugglinf the downed pilot through France and across the Pirranese mountains into neutral spain? You havent got a clue and you make yourself look stupid making uneducated comments like that.
That's partially true. I think the film was more about the non-heroic elements within the resistance. It worked to remove all the romanticized notions about the resistance by drawing from Melville's own experiences of working in the resistance.
That's not partially true. It's true. The film is a not an argument for or against the resistance and thus doesn't argue for or against its effectiveness. This was in response to another message here. Thanks for expanding upon this.
This is great, but the preview is even better on the Rialto site. You still get the influence of the shadows in the scenes, but you can make out the faces and expressions more clearly.
He will choose not to run this time.

What is the piano music that is heard during the credits of the film? The theme can be heard in this trailer from about 0.44-1.05. Its beautiful.

I don't think it was about "the non-heroic elements."
What I mean to say is that the "non-heroic" elements of the character's situations were what made the characters more courageous.
They were ultimately normal people, fighting a losing fight, who did what was necessary to resist the Germans.
