I am African American, and I was very proud that Nandita Das mentioned Dr. Martin Luther King in her interview. He was truly a great man and activist. He stood for all minorities, not just African Americans. I think being a minority influences humbleness. I love Nandita and Shabana. I admire the fact that religion, politics, and culture wasn't an influence on the roles they accepted. These are two special ladies!
this is pure middle class whoredom that Nandita Das represents. You will never find these hypocrite coward talk about Talibans whipping girls in swat or Islamic fanatics imposing Jizya on the few remaining Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan..India today is full of such wannabe great souls who deep down lack basic courage.
perhaps Nandita needs to do some homework before working on social concerns. She did an advaert for Teach for India, the Indian variation of Teach for America. Teach for America was the creation of Union Carbide after the Bhopal disaster. Union Carbide tried to avoid responsibility in India but sponsored Teach for America to repair it's image in the United States.
Where she talks about the reasoning behind why she chose Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas to replace Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi.
I found her reason why she replaced Nandita with Lisa kind of ridiculous. I think Nandita Das is fully capable of playing a "fragile" individual. If you look at most of her work...she is so versatile in her acting skills...so I believe she would've owned that role of Kalyani!
I finally got time to watch "EARTH" and fell in love with this actress, she is beautiful and talented. Some of her facial expressions reminded me of a young Nastassja Kinsky.
I watched Fire and would like to know other films of her. She acts in other movies as the traditionnal bollywood movies. I would love to seemore inde inidan movies. could u tell me some titles that are worth it to watch.
Deepa Mehta needs to get off her high horse. She's made quite a fuss on the lack of quality in cinema that results from the oppression by the culture cops in India.
Once she found a way to make 'Water' elsewhere, she dumped this bright, talented actress and cast two models for the main leads.
Is there a limit to the hypocrisy? Lisa Ray isn't even a native Indian.
Actually the ONLY reason why the director Deepa redid Water elsewhere was because the 'culture cops' (by which I'm sure you mean religion cops) wouldn't allow Nandita Das or Shabana Azmi to do the film, with various death threats being issued against Deepa.. thats why Lisa Ray got the part! No hypocricy.. it was just out of necessity.. Deepa couldn't have made a film with the Earth and Fire stars because she'd have been attacked..
Thank you for the info. I think it stinks that people are allowed to get away with threats to others due to religious belief. Everyone should be entitled to their own opinion and their point of view without being bullied. Nandita Das is by far one of the most talented actresses in India.

Its amazing how "ugly" Nandita Das is, by traditional Indian standards. And yet she has this irresistible sexual power that drives me nuts.
