Gold IS strong. It's soft and strong, as opposed to hard and brittle. You can stretch it into a hair thin sheet. Strong being used here to mean that it hangs together well.
They still use gold, they just bake a layer of porcelain over the top of it. Therefore you get the aestetics of porcelain along with the really good fit from gold.
for molars, I like just plain gold crowns. they last a long time, I have had a couple gold crowns like 13 years now, sometimes the gold is an alloy that makes it stronger
