This is very interesting. You don't have to lose a hand for this technology. It demonstrates that you can create a phantom limb - so we should be able to manage multiple extra limbs - like the goddess Kali. What would be useful would be a tool arm, even something as simple as the ability to "lock" a grip in place like a vice would be pretty useful. There is room under our arms for an interface.
In 100 years everybody will take for granted what people are researching into now, they'll laugh at how it took processors the size of a fist to compute movement on a three jointed finger.
Im pretty sure there's some fingers missing. I mean, if you're human and you're looking forward to replace a missing limb. If you're an alien or a giant eagle, its just ok.
Most of the other bionic limbs I've seen have soft white rubber coatings with realistic human-shaped fingers to seem as natural as possible. Naturally Intel's version is a black plastic devil hand.
People believe than size of a company mean quality in their products, small companies are better focused than big multinationals, thats why big trust buys small companies. Ford buying Aston Martin, Volkswagen buying Rolls Royce, Audi buying Lamborgini. I prefer a lot of small specialized enterprises than a few giant and fool monopolies, is better for economy, better for workers, better for technology and for the consumer.
Machines made man in their image because machines valued life. How else can you explain living wires (nerves) and a holographic cpu/storage unit (brain)? Humans are just living machines, everything is very precise, everything has to be perfect or nothing works... explain that. Now Man is making machines in his image... it's a cycle.
just think if we can do this we can save alot of lifes if we can make robots that will fight i know it sounds silly but think about it the people that would die from a grenade or a bullet are saved bye these things and they feel no pain
@RagnarokStudio nah google seems to be well meaning. something evil will come from the military. although google might end up providing the military 'minds' with the means to do it.
AI is surprisingly easy yet perhaps fortunately humans are surprisingly unintelligent and haven't figured it out yet. at least in public.
lets see, a hand made for working in the etremes of tempertures, made to replicate a human grip, problly with some degree of redundcy and failsafes, govenrment sponsered, and costing problly millions of dollars, yes thsts the hand that will meke it to the mainstream
@littlealanbig Intel is a company that researches more of the theoretical intelligence rather than practical intelligence. So robotics is a new field for them. :)

To the negative comments - It's a PROTOTYPE being TESTED & will ADVANCE as it nears becoming a production model. Some are never satisfied.
It's amazing even at this early stage!

Fucking amazing, look at the number of degrees of motion they're able to cram into that thing. Way better than some current prosthetics.
