I believe the section is actually from left to right, Maurie Harris, Conte Candoli (who is of course in front of the band for this tune), John Audino, and Snooky Young. Maurie is only seen very briefly....it COULD be Jimmy Zito, but I don't think so. Either way, it's a great section.
I wish late night TV had a band with the horsepower and jazz heavies that Doc's band had! The viewing world sure missed a lot of blistering Christlieb solos during commercial break!
Mr. CANDOLI: mon premier choc culturel en matière de jazz j'avais 15 ans ( ce n'est pas hier )style West coast, c'est clean, rien à dire ,ça sonne super bien , merci mille fois pour ce clip!!
without a doubt, Conte was fabulous, a true disciple of Diz settling on the west coast by way of the Kenton Orchestra. Trivia question: Which Maynard Ferguson session did he play on in the 50's?
I had the good fortune to meet Pete and Conte in the early 80's in LA. I saw him perform in Long Beach as well as with the Tonight Show Band, and with a few local big bands.
@selector111 fstrassmann was right, it was the Dimensions album. In fact on earlier versions (like the 10" LP) they couldn't mention Conte's name due to contractual reasons and had to refer to him in the notes as being "an Italian count", I think this was due to his contract with Bethlehem Records...
@selector111 Conte had a contract with Bethlehem records for whom he cut his debut LP in the mid 50's... Maybe it was the liner of notes Maynard's "Octet" LP I'm thinking about that refers to the Italian count because that was 1955.. I have the Dimensions 10" LP with the Burt Goldblatt cover, I'm not as familiar with the 12" LP version of the same...
@selector111 Hi, I believe it was Snooky Young....sorry your question was not answered, perhaps jazzfi didn't understand you were talking about one thing and he was on another riff....:-))...He is a great player and a wonderful man...they just honored him at a tribute a couple of months ago. He was with the Tonight Show Band, I believe, from the 60's to 1992.. Tha
mostly agreed, but dinah had a superband in the 70's.With people like ray pizzi, randy aldcroft..randy writes for the tonight show then and maybe now at times actually.Interchangable players though..with subbing and all, lol.Johnny had a bad ass band though!!!!!!!.Over time, simply the best to be had to the ear!Man,with musicians like Bill rReichenbach,Phil Teele,Tom Peterson, the greats!!!First call musicians,SALUTE!

Count was a real natural--nothing forced, nothing far out, nothing to prove; everything just flowed out of him, seemingly without effort.

@jazzfi I was asking about who was playing lead not about conte's debut album, I don't understand why you are talking to me about this.

@Visionsla John Audino was lead for many years, and then after he died (87) I think it was Snooky.....
