This only strengthens my case that in order to learn any musical instrument well one has to first master the fundamentals. The rest falls into place eventually after putting in the hours of practice.
Your instruction is practical, succinct and most importantly intuitive.
I prefer the no-frills approach here to overwhelming me with too much info.
Agreed. Learning music is learning a language. Children need to speak one and two word utterances and to pronounce them correctly before writing novels.
thanks for posting this video, it's the very first thing i learned =)...you should definitly post more vids like this.. It really helped hearing the beat alone, and then matching it up with the music!
Thanx, I like how you show the rhythm, and then how it goes with the music... would you normally keep the steady beat going in this style, or add more flavor later?
this was awesome...i was looking for something like this for quite a while. like a year ago i couldnt find much at all. this was very easy to pick up. i dont have any drums at this time but just playing on the couch is working just fine. thanks for the easy to follow lessons
Your story about playing "bongo" on the couch reminds me that many many moons ago I used to play "bongo" on my legs, my calves actually, sitting cross legged. One morning I woke up and looked and my calves were black and blue. I was all worried, just a young kid. Thought maybe I had cancer or something, I didn't know what was wrong or how it happened.
They were black and blue from playing "bongo" on them the night before..... I bought my first pair shortly thereafter!
I just posted a comment on your samba video earlier, so I already have the answer on my left-hander question!
Are these videos available for purchase at a music store or via the 'Net? You're probably the best bongo player I've seen on YouTube--and definitely one of the best teachers.
Well thanks for the nice comments Charlie, much appreciated!
Have you seen the "Cookin' With the Martillo" video I did? Because a buddy of mine posted it, some people overlook it. I had a lot of fun with that also.
My gig with the bongo has been to pretty much do everything for free.... for the good of the instrument....

Thanks Ursus! These are very affordable LP Matador bongos. However, I played many pairs of this brand at the music store, most of which were mediocre, before purchasing this set. Moral of the story: try several pairs of the same model before you buy! There is wide variation within each model.

Matt,
Thank you for the lesson. I was a drum set player for many years, and many gigs.
Now, I want to get in hand drumming. I am left handed, so it was good to see your video.
I hope you make more for the love of music.
peace.

really cool! Crispy sound... I'm always afraid to tune my bongos to that point =(

That's OK. Start with higher quality skins, bring them up high with your tuning, then lower them after playing.
It's a good time...

Hello Aetherus, thanks!
It would depend strictly on the piece. You always have to play what the individual and particular song requires.
