such a beautiful little interpretation. but my teacher said "don't mind Gould - he was allowed to play whatever he liked - but not you!" so maybe I can't really follow his way exactly...
What's the argument here? The inventions were written as technical exercises for Bach's students... so playing them technically is the goal here, it wasn't necessarily written with soul. Gould FTW
I really like this interpretation. Not too fast. I can savor the counterpoint and pick out each entry. I also like the deliberate bit of mischief here when Gould ignores the traditional "detache" eight notes and renders them legato.
I often get the feeling that Gould is having fun with us ... he was obviously aware of the Baroque tradition which allowed the perfomer great latitude in tempi and in adding .. or subtracting ornaments. The perfomer shared in the composer's creations.
@nikkitytom I totally agree with you, he brought a great sense of fun, even childish innocence to pieces that unfortunately, have become ponderously interpreted by boring so called purists.
@TRENDYPLACEBO How silly. I don't have to be better than Gould to be able to recognize that others have done a better job at interpreting this music.
As a listener I have the right to make that judgement. To my ear his playing is soulless, compared to others I have heard. His technique is unsurpassed, there is no arguing that. But sometimes technique isn't all there is to it and I think he lost sight of the fact that just because you can play something super fast doesn't mean you should.
Bach is a funny dude, i remember when my teacher gave me this song, i sort of laughed because the notes were too easy, but it took me a whole month to create the dynamics
its amazing, the articulation on the scale parts.. just omg..
If i analize it, in the first part, he uses a lot of stacatto on the chord notes, even in the 5 and 6 measures, with a really good voicing on 9, 10 and 11 measures.
Then in the re-exposure he uses legato on the chord notes, and he creates and unexpected enviroment that blows my mind. hes just the greatest pianist interpretating bach!
it nice to finaly find the source of that tone .. and when you think of it, alot of tones used today in alot of different ways (alarm clocks, movies, toys and lots of other stuff) or even most of them, are actually classical symphonies like bach , mozart, beethoven and so on.. so they still have a very significant impact on the sounds we hear today, not only those of us who like to listen to classical music.. but everyone
what I think what is very funny is that my piano teacher told me I have to play the 16th notes legato and the 8ths notes staccato and that should be the traditionaly way, but glenn gould does it the other way around :p
his playing is slower than some other versions so I came to check the speed. ranges between 96-104. that's still very fast compared to the speed I got myself up to right now :( i hope if I can get up to Gould's speed then the examiners won't think it's too slow. need more practice!!!
hmm.. I really like his interpretation but I listened to this (which I just recently finished) and 4 (which I'm just now learning) and his tempo is backwards of what my teacher told me to do, he played 4 quite fast and 8 slower, hmm...
Oh you are a genius!!! You had 12 and learned this in 1 month??? WOW!!!! I can't believe it!
...
Now, back to the reality: Serious,This is a very easy piece, and is required when teaching children, i can't believe you took so much time learning this, when is a very easy piece, 1 month?, I believe to thegooddescomposer, because i learned this in 1 day, too, but i'm not like you "Oh look at me 1 month, 12..." There is already a wonderful film in existence called 'Thirty Two Short Films about Glenn Gould' (1993) with Colm Feore in the title role - he is excellent. Would like to keep Jim Carrey, as anyone who loves and values Gould would do, from ever playing Gould - away altogether - in another galaxy perhaps - far far away.
that chair is the only chair Gould would sit on at the piano, he took it everywhere with him and used it well after the very seat cushion was worn off. His father made it for him by cutting off nearly half the length of the legs and rigging up little adjustable rubber tips. Genius like Gould. Just Google the words Glenn Gould's chair and see what comes up but it's better to read one of the biographies. He was fascinating.
I am playing this piece and won using the piece Glenn Gould did. It is a role model for people that are learning this. I am going to Cornegie Hall to peform just because of listening to this, I won. I love this.
