What's the program you use? I've used Paint Shop Pro 7 since I was 13 but have not gotten any better at art, but other people can do this it's amazing!!
that was GREAT...the feet and hands could use a little work...mainly the fingers looked a little short...please take this as constructive critisism not someone who knows nothing about art telling you negative things for no reason...you are a great artist and I personally get a little annoyed when people tell me about problems with my work...but in the long run it always helps me grow as an artist...
If you're working from a color photograph like I am in this video, I suggest to not use the burn and instead use the color picker to assist you in choosing the right color and value. In this demo, my aim was to train my eye to see and properly recreate shapes. If I wanted to do a value or color study, I would approach things a bit differently. Try to use the burn and dodge tool sparingly. I usually use them to add final adjustments at the end of a finished piece. Good luck! - Joel
wush17 ... dont you realise the old masters used to project an image onto a wall and paint what they saw ans copied the colors ? for someone who waffles a lot you dontknow nothing ... also ... try to do this painting here the same way - without cloning ... you couldnt do it ... get a life .
This is called bargue drawing (minus the color picking), it's not a paint over.
Anyways, it's a well know exercise that trains the eye, the focus and allows you to practice tones.
Other drawing exercises include: blind drawing, mass/volume shaping, dummy posing, light painting and no curve sketching. All of these are meant to break the ice and train your skills.
It's a little like a body builder doing some stretches before lifting the heavy weights.
Rockwell did indeed use models in his studio, most from his own town, but he also used photos MANY times as referecne. He projected these images on to the canvas sometimes. Nobody cares how you do something, as long as it looks good.
Not saying this video is anything Rockwelling or something, but don't just disregard it because it's a direct copy. It's not supposed ot be an illustration, it's a study. Copying things as close as possible makes you better, no matter how you do it.
When you are copying like this what is it actually that you are studying, and what is learned? Now take the photograph and use it as reference to draw something in a varied pose.
This is not a figure study. Its just copying from a photograph. Is this the future of art? Copying from photographs as realistically as possible? What's the point? Might as well take a picture. Oh wait, you already did.
Forgive me if my comment suggest that I detest using photo references. I have nothing against using reference, but to copy it "verbatim" (lack of a better word) is pointless. You're just regurgitating what everybody else sees. Its like you're copying directly from a phone book, and you're learning nothing from it. Guys like Rockwell and Alex Ross use photos, and models as reference, but their work is admired for their style and ideals. I agree that if it looks good nobody cares, but...
but if its obvious that you just copied something and contributed nothing to it, I'm gonna point it out. BTW, a study is one's mind making sense of whatever it is he's trying to understand by breaking complex forms down to its most basic, structural form. All I see is copying here.
I agree it's not very creative but the artist does learn from it. I mean, if you're bad at anatomy, or just painting in general, copying things can make you improve your skills. Being creative in artworks is a later stage of the process, and clearly this artist is just working on his or her skills.
I couldn't have put it better myself. I think a lot of the confusion behind this kind of work is that most entry level figurative artists aren't aware that these are exercises and not a complete work of art. Its no different than sitting in a room with a live model... essentially your trying to recreate what you see in front of you. Thats all. Yes Photoshop does make it easier to correct mistakes but no more than properly using traditional methods if your skill set is high. Thanks Karen - Joel
hey, I have a question regarding what software would be the best to speed up this kind of movies? I have a photoshop presentation to do, and I have about 2h of my photoshop recordings [original .avi file then converted into .mov file] which I would like to quicken into about 5 minutes. Therefore I'll be greatly thankful for any advice!
heh, to me your painting looks better than the original picture! :D Too bad I can only draw and paint with brushes, though I've never tried to paind ot draw in photoshop.
good drawing skills. cutout is good for blocking out lights and shadows but it eats up the color and it makes it almost monochromatic you might wanna try turning your ref back to normal once you have the basic blocks of lights and shadows ;)
Thanks for the comment. Actually if you take look at the entire video, I revert back to the original reference. I only use the cutout filter as a starting point for viewing shadow shapes and a generic color palette to start sketching with. Cheers - J
i am looking for a pen tablet that best suits my needs, can you help me? i use flash, photoshop retouching photos and i'd like to start digi. painting, any tips on what kind of tablet i should consider buying>? i was on the wacom website, and its all too confusing, i heard , the smaller the more precise but what type of tablet please help???!!!
Try the Intuos 9x12. The smaller the LESS precise. Also, the smaller, the more the hand strain. That's bad, by the way. If you're really into digital art, get a Cintiq; they're tablet monitors that allow you to work right on the screen. They start at 1000 and go to 2500 dollars.
WOW. That was absolutely incredible. It takes a very HARD look or detailed eye to spot the differences - one being that your version is a little more "fit" than the original. She shed a few pounds lol. Nice nice work I hope you make money from this talent if not you are very humble.
That's amazing ! :) The most thing I like about digital painting is that it looks much more real and artistic than original photo ! I see that a really nice work was done here :)I also do similar dig. painting and I know how much time does it worth...I really like your work!:)
In the past, when cameras were either non-existent or very primitive, art was meant to be the camera. Today, we have cameras, so art doesn't necessarily have to serve that function anymore. I get that.
But what's wrong with striving for realism in your art and trying to recreate what you see? The great thing about art is that each artist has his own style and each piece is unique. There may be this movement toward the abstract and "meaningful," but who's to say this art is pointless?
As graphic designers we must embrace new tecnology in order to be able to explore new potencials, anyway this is the old discussion about shape vs funtion (or now technic vs funtion). I believe in both but i really dont believe in a designer who is far behind in the potencial of his own job
Wow a REAL artist! As opposed to people like me who spend hours tweaking a bazillion layers to approximate what you can do in one or two. ;-) Fabulous eye!
