  • The Byrds take on Tamborine Man was Dylan's first #1 song. Even Blowin in the Wind never reached #1. It was the first #1 song by an American Group (almost a year after the Beatles hit in February of 1964) after the Beatles and other Brittish groups dominated the Charts. It was the biggest break for Dylan up to this point in Dylan's life, and every group wanted to play Dylan's songs after that. McGuinns arrangement was far superior to Dylans', but credit should go to both.

  • magic what? Yes. I agree we shoudl go wondering. Hey Mr.....

  • To kingrunnisfilms: The Preachers were a short-lived Los Angeles garage band who happened to be in the right place at the right time to get this appearance on Shivaree. They cut four singles total before breaking up.

  • To balinwire: Carol Crane was a British singer who had a somewhat decent song called "What else do you do for kicks." Can be seen on youtube.

  • I wonder how they avoided the draft.

  • It's been quite a long, long time...:-) Google me, Debbie Tomko and VOTE for my first music video....:-)

  • Wow, I had--gosh--I had not recalled. The Preachers! What ever happened to them? Did they really exist?

  • If this isn't profound nothing is!!!

  • Gotta love The Preachers *who the hell are they?*

  • These guys look cool even now, while the rest are squares! Seems like they from a different time to those around them....

  • wow....they are cleary...very, very STONED...GREAT STUFF

  • playback?

  • Thanks for the post.

  • I grew up in the early 80s and The Byrds are an enormous influence on British alternative music. The "jingle jangle" sound is there from The Smiths to the Stone Roses to Teenage Fanclub. I discovered them via The Smiths and at the time it was jaw dropping. These were the masters. I can't understand the nasty comments. This may be controversial, but The Byrds easily trump The Beatles who were always hideously overrated IMHO.

  • This is probably the worst ripoff of a Bob Dylan song I've heard. Way to ruin the essence of the songs, brahs. I remember my mom showed me this single once and said it was a great song. I slapped her with my record of Bringing It All Back Home.

  • @TheBestCommenterEVER ...they made this song a #1 hit for Dylan, so I'm sure Dylan had no problem with their version.

  • @TheBestCommenterEVER bob dylan wrote a great song. shame he put 0 effort into it. the byrds took what was ugly and cold and made it beautiful and warm. your comment is a joke so is your musical taste.

  • @kjah187 negro please. bob dylan wrote a classic and the byrds had to gay it up with their run of the mill poppy sound that of course went on to sell millions because the lyrics were mysterious and the music was so simple even your mom could appreciate it. and you, quite obviously.

  • The la Drang campaign is looming ...November 1965

  • @ahab345 ya - McGuinn could easily have played in the Zombies!!

  • jim was tripping BAAALLLSS

  • the byrds un buen conjunto de los 60 buena epoca Nelson Lostaunau DE PERU

  • The drummer looked like Brian Jones

  • it's good, but i prefer bob dylan

  • mannomann, was hatten wir für geile musik damals. die heutigen kinder kann man nicht beneiden um das, was ihnen da vorgesetzt wird.

  • I saw this....

  • Thank you for this raw cut. An earlier Bobby Fuller Four raw cut of Shivaree has disappeared. Keep this up as long as you can! Pass it on to others if you have to!

  • Best lead break in middle....Woul liked song to be longer

  • Shivaree seems to be a show that had terrific energy ~ the girls are dancing before the music starts! Hold on! they stopped when the music started??? ~ Wow that's alternative!

  • David Crosby looks like a 12 year old kid

  • @MrToits

No he didn't. He was going bald even then. Check out his performance at Monterey Pop Festival. He was wearing a freakin fur cap in California?? Dude was completely bald by 1967. Put him in the fur cap and that stupid cape he was wearing and that's a fashion statement!! No wonder he was drining heavily. Remember this, Menundo was the greatest American band since the Beatles. SQUARES all of you.

  • oh my god. mcguinn is TERRIFYING

  • what a lively audience, they were there to PARTY

  • This song is for stoners

  • @realhxq Yeah, Duh!

  • singing out against the illuminatti 45 years ago....boy have we gone backwards

  • Even good old Glenn Campbell was there...........regards.

  • I question this being the Byrds first TV performance I remember seeing them in mid to late April 65 on the NBC show "Hullabaloo" Which aired on Monday nights It was WILD that night. The audience went wild over Tamborine Man and they had to play it 3 times The show host had lost control of the crowd and they ended the show with the Byrds playing the song for the 3th time instead of closing with the shows theme The audience had jumped on stage and was dancing to the song Wish the tape was around.

  • I think they did pretty darn good considering its it was 1965 and that my friend was 45 years ago

  • It really had little to do with their ability. Almost all performances had to be lip-synced in those days as they couldn't get quality sound in a TV studio.

  • @TheFiatLux I saw them live twice in the 60's. You don't have a clue.

  • @dougalmac54 A clue about what? Be more specific.

  • it´s wonderfull mr.T man.Tito

  • great find :)))))))) worth the search, thanks !

  • how do they make such great music i can listen to it all day long

  • beautiful

  • 1:17 McGuinn reminds me of a marionette from the Thunderbirds.

  • Great times...

    Great tunes...

  • Whoa, that's a lot of famous guests. I forgot how old Glen is.

  • Comment removed

  • Man, I love the Byrds!

  • Question on Carol Crane, I believe he was trying to say Carol King.

  • This was before we got use to Bob Dylan singing his own songs!!!!! Oh yes....

  • Who was James Darren screwin' that he got on ALL of these mid-60s rock and roll shows?

  • This is a blast from the past; brillant. The only two bands I can think of that compairs are 'the jesus and mary chain' and 'the Stone Roses'. Four decades later the byrds passed the most important test; TIME. brillant.

  • Not to mention... Who is that "Carol Crane" she looks super hot. I 'youtubed' her and got nothing. And, what is the name of this show?

  • I think your all wrong - except for the guy that said Roger McGuinn looks dosed! - His performance is totally haunting. More research must be done!

  • His square glasses helped a bit!

  • the byrds are awesome! I never get tired of listening this band!

im from Argentina y im 20 years old but most of the times I listen the 60's bands like the byrds, the turtles, the animals, the vogues, the casuals,etc..nothing compares to the horrible music of our days!

    great video!

  • Listening to songs like this reminds me how much I miss the 60's - this was one of my all time favourites!

  • Fantastic days of Rock, Nothing compares today!!!!!!!!!

  • just geat

  • If you're trying to compare early 60's t.v. with todays hi-tech version, you're making a mistake. That was then, just a forum for promoting your songs.Sometimes they were done live, others, due to logistical reasons, were lip-syched.Instead of nitpicking,at least just sit back and enjoy the music.

  • Mc Guinn!!! Please put your glasses on!!

  • @ahab345 ought to put some talent on he's a self obsessed person who thinks that they invented the Jingle Jangle sound WHAT A COP OUT it was and is known to any one who knows anything about 60's pop music it is The Searchers from Liverpool.Put that in your glasses Mr McGuinn.

  • Way to go Einstein.

  • Of course it's "fake". At the time TV was a new and revolutionary way for an artist to get exposure. There were only three basic networks and the pioneers who brought us these shows were experimenting with an untested formula. But if you are really concerned about "FAKE", the auto-toned, American Idolized crap that is being massed produced today is what is truly fake. And, by the way,"truly fake" is a perfect example of an oxymoron.

  • @coachpill

I feel your pain. Did you see other live performances with Crosby in a freakin cape? What the hell was he thinkin? You wanna see some real freaks? Check out The Young Rascals on the Ed Sullivan Show. This one dude is dressed like Carmen Miranda playing the miraccas or something. He actually hought he was cool. What a maroon. Everyone know Boys to Men were the real American Beatles. You can't hide what's inside, you square.

  • @ggchokee1

LOL! Crosby was a fat kid so they used the cape and poncho to hide him. The FUGLY member of The Byrds. Sad cause the rest of the band were the hippest looking and sounding American group at the time. The rest looked like band wagon jumpers trying to be part of the British Invasion.

Crosby voice and harmonies were not that great. Rog/Jim is awesome but he creeps me out a bit in this video. Looks like he could be a Manson helper or something.

  • @Franzko787

I am so ashamed (not really) but I didn't know he was the fat kid (actually the PC term is chubby.) He should have embraced his fat self, like the fat guy with the beard from Canned Heat, or Leslie West from Mountain. Hey Franzko787, thanks for setting the record straight. My jokes and comments are drawing some heat on other videos. At least you got a sence of humor. Thanks again. ROCK ON

  • @Franzko787

McGuinn looks rather creepy in a fair number of videos, I am afraid. His look is emblematic of the 60s however. Don't know if I wholly agree about Crosby. I understand a lot of chicks thought he was cute

  • @LTF6161

Yeah but Roger is a good guy. I think here the close up was too tight, the lighting was bad and the film/video is old and distorted. I give him credit for still being alive. Sad that some of the guys in Byrds and Beach Boys are gone. I am amazed Crosby is still around.

As far as chicks digging Crosby - I "heard" that some chicks took lots of drugs back in the 60s' ;-)

  • @Franzko787 Disagree with Crosby's voice. He wasnt a great lead vocalist but his backups were flawless. Those soaring high harmonies were McCartney-like.

  • Almost certainly the finest thing Dylan ever wrote and very possibly the greatest piece of rock music released during the 60's.And that's sayin' somethin'!

  • Back then they didn't perform live music, it was all lips synch.

  • How far we come, now we just don't have any good music/variety shows on TV.

  • So true i wish modern music could move me like byrds version of tambourine man does.

  • Its odd. In the early 1950s it was all done live. Then it moved to lip syching and now its mostly live again. (except for promotional videos of course). Shindig however was live. Just one reason that it was the best rock and roll show ever.

  • Check out Second Flyte. A great Byrds tribute band, Chris Hillman endorsed them. Playing in VA April 26 2009.

  • lol at 1:30 he looks consterpated

  • It looks to me like he's dosed.

  • actually hes uncomfortable about the lypsinc

  • playback

  • SHHHEEEESHHHH.....just discovered that Roger McGuinn played banjo behind the Chad Mitchell trio, therefore the (connection) w/John Denver. 'Freakin interesting.

  • Rog's banjo picking style on the Rick 12-string gave them their sound. Crosby was a fat as a kid too. LOL! They should have brought the bass player up and moved Crosby back.

  • Is there any truth to the (speculation) that the late, great John Denver was w/them in their (formative) yrs?

  • No microphones... Hmmm

  • Does anyone have video of the "special guests" The Preachers?? Mr. Tambourine Man- This song was #1 in 1965- pretty amazing considering how many great songs The Beatles had at this time!

  • And when anyone is putting videos or even thinking about you 44 years from now, you might not seem like such a douchebag.

  • WOW!

  • Parece un grupo de hoy dia!

  • Those dumbass twitchy go-go dancers on the elevated platforms always irritated me even then. This kind of TV show was looooong on hype, man.

That said, The Byrds were always worth seeing any time, anywhere.

  • How quaint!

  • Kinda makes you wonder what ever happened to The Preachers.

  • There's another video on the net where Michael Clarke tells about him being an alcoholic and that he was drunk most of the time on stage. He was probably drunk here. I guess thats why he looks bored stiff most of the time.

  • see the genius of divine destiny/fate ahead of time? all of the mob (naive loving people, but basically dumb behind their time) repeating itself in history over and over again ???

  • McGuinn looks like he's stoned out of his gourd here.

  • Great song, one of the all-time best.

Roger McGuinn was one dude that knew how to "work the camera".

    Good for him.

  • this song still sends chills up my spine terric tosee this again

  • Never seen this one before. What a close up on McGuinn! Thanks for posting. The Byrds rule!

  • Yes. They owned folk rock.
