The song is actually called "Tooryanse" - a Japanese children's rhyme/game much like "London Bridge is Falling Down". The lyric's quite macabre though...
“Pass through, pass through
Here is the underworld’s narrow pathway
It’s the narrow pathway of the demon’s shrine
Please allow me to pass through
Those without a sacrifice shall not pass
To bury this child at age 7, I’ve come to offer my services
Living may be fine, fine, but going back would be scary
I've always found this song incredibly catchy. Is it based off an old Japanese folk song or just made up for the crosswalks? Either way it's gorgeous. All we have here is irritating beeps.
Its a childrens' song called "Tooryanse". Which in English mean "Please let me through". Though I have been unable to find a viable file for download at this time.
Oh gosh, you should have seen me and my older brother singing to the music everytime we crossed a street. We must have really fit the strange and slightly obnoxious American stereotype well.
Yeah actually this song appears in a scary anime that is call: BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM, and it talks about a deathly form who kills students. This song appears so often when people is passing through the streets!! :S SPOOKY!!
i really want this song as an mp3. it's bugged me for a really long time that i can't find it, and like previous comments say it's used frequently in animes. such a haunting melody i can't have T.T
I remember when I first heard this on the second episode of Bleach and I seriously thought it was part of the music for the show. But then I heard it again on Dennou Coil.
There was allot of complaints about the noise these crossing were making late at night so the council had the music turned off. In another part of Japan, I forget where, they have bird noises instead of music.
Much like the English Ring Around the Rosie, Tōryanse is a children's song that carries a darker meaning. It was written at a time when infant mortality rates were high and a celebration was held if a child reached the age of seven.
The first verse of the song is just that: somebody taking a seven year old to the shrine for his or her birthday. The second verse, however, is somebody taking a seven tear old to the underworld to be buried.
would it be weird if I use this music for my phone as a ringtone??

@MayerGartley Yep. It's the common crossing tune. The way Boogiepop Phantom tweaks and warps it makes it sound so ominous. O_o
