This has to be my favorite game. I played it so much in the late nineties and i even bought a new version later on. The intro were Gordon is on this metro train going through the base was very good. The enemies and characters were interesting. The different level designs were excellent i can remember looking for the way out so many times. my onel regret is. I never actually finished the game.

@steve5123456789 If you're getting HL for the fun factor, I'd recommend the PC. The game really plays best by far on a computer and isn't really made for a console experience. In additon, on the PC you'll have easily accessible Multiplayer and thousands of mods to choose from :)

definately worth a lot mroe than the 10 bucks it costs.

you didn't play half life during its release, did you? then i'm not sure how you think you can say anything how it was viewed at the time.

the fact is, before half life, most fps games were really arcade-like, like say wolfenstein, doom and duke nukem 3d. none of those games took a serious approach and tried to present itself realistically. they had levels, health & ammo packs scattered throughout the levels. it was just a game. not in anyway trying to simulate realism.

what half life did is, it was a game where you're constantly playing from gordon freeman's perspective. there are no cutscenes, there are no levels. the game is a continuous adventure from start to finish. that was never utilized before to the extend half life did.

also, the game setting was probably the most realistic of any fps yet. the game starts with you going to work. an accident happens etc.. weapons, enemies and the whole setting was belieavable unlike in previous fps.

@avatarion these things are true; and the game was praised for these tweaks. however, it was not groundbreaking or revolutionary by any means, as most FPS continued in the arcade style you mention for several years. only when the gameplay allowed it would shooters take a more 'serious' approach like HL did.

Ofcourse later games drew their inspiration from this game, but there's a difference between revolutionizing the genre and setting a standard.

Little innovation? Before Half-Life, barely any games started off before the incident occurs, had cutscenes that put you in them that you can actually move around and stuff. There was innovation in this game.

I recently got Half Life source, and i love it, the only thing im dissapointed with is the lack of batteries and HEV suit chargers, because it only adds a inessecary level of difficulty to the game. The case with Blue Shift was better where you could pick up armor, I think half life could have been a little better if you could possibly pick up PCV vests for like, 5% suit battery. Overall its a great game

@HolySausage Well in some things i'd admit that but in other aspects i wouldnt, for example S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Dead Space, games that merge action and in the first case ego shooter with role playing elements are heavily influenced by the System Shock franchise, and even Half Life itself is...well kind of influenced by the first System Shock (you can check that on wikipedia and the sources), and since i played that game the riddles in Half Life just seem generic and characters arent as remarkable

I'm sorry, but I disagree with most of your points. The sound mixing was very bad in my opinion, with the sound effects very often muffling dialogue, even with adjustments in the options. Voice acting, great, but overall it was not enjoyable. The difficulty was set way too high, even for medium. If it wasn't for the quick saves, I would have thrown my computer out the window. The AIs had extreme accuracy, especially with grenades and grenade launchers, often killing you a few seconds in-battle.

@ericleb01 I can agree that the sound to the standard of this day is at the very least clunky, they are even saved as .wmv files in the install directory and then activated in-game.

However the AI's point was to kick your arse BADLY to begin with, to give you enemies which matched you and you really felt were top-trained supersoldiers. Each battle often took planning and patience, but they were passable even with 1 health. Glad to have your pespective though!

@HolySausage I tried to make a review of my own after my comment, actually (similar to my Prototype one on my channel), but Fraps isn't working. I'm just glad that the game included a quick save feature, otherwise I would have tossed my computer out of my window.

I mean come on; for the final boss, I turned on god mode and noclip, and it STILL took me fifteen minutes to beat because of the unavoidable teleporting orb it shot out every other second. Medium difficulty should not be so hard.

@ericleb01 the final boss is kind of annoying, i'll give you that. it takes forever to figure out how to beat him. first you'd need to kill those orange crystals which recharges his health, then score hits on the teleport thing in his head. You'd need to take cover from his teleports, though. Shoot them with the rocket launcher to make the teleports explode :)

Valve still hasn't topped this game, in my opinion. Half Life 2 was fantastic, as was Portal, but neither are quite as special as Half-Life. There's something tough to describe about it that puts it on another level.

With miy version, the shot gun and machine gun looks different, mine, its an M16, iwth a grenade launcher, yours is a uzi with a grenade launcher, the shotguns, I don't know how to explain them, but they still are different, same with the medkit thingies attached to the walls and the HEV suit chargers, its kinda weird.

This game is still fun to play after 12 years! I even rather play half life then play any Halo series, any time! This should be compatible for the DS, or PSP too, I want to play it everywhere. I played COD4 on the DS, and the graphics are pretty much like half life.
