Um, this is basic police training. You use plastic riot rounds or wooden 'flat' rounds (same you use when you have your training attachment for your rifle) for this. This training is also very common in military police around the world, particularly in nordic countries. It's your basic combat course with some goofing off. No live rounds.

This is a perfect lesson on what NOT to do on an action range. Go watch an IDPA, IPSC or Tac 3-Gun competition (or participate in one) to see truly safe, practical, not "tacticool" firearm management.

This must have been tightly choreographic-ed walk-through rehearsed and staged sequences in order to prevent mishaps. Or the luckest group of people ever. It's practise. If your "fully loaded" rifle becomes an empty rifle with no more rounds available you transition. Or you may realise a malfunction will take longer to fix than transitioning to your secondary. Knives = third option. Goofy as it may have looked I'd put that shooters rifle, pistol, and knife skill against the best.

The Changing "full" rifle to pistol is to practice for malfunctions, running out of ammo etc. My rifle once jammed and thanks to this kind of training, I could react and pull out my pistol quickly.

Checking your surroundings for enemy, friendlies, or anything else that might have an impact on the fight is always a good idea. A lot of people will loose situational awareness because of the stress, and forcing yourself to check your surroundings can go a long way towards knowing what's going on around you.
