Hi Burt, What are your thoughts on QRP contests? They tend to send 'true' RS(T) reports. The (usually) false 59(9) reports seem to be your main beef. Also us QRP guys don't clog the bands too much. I've been QRP only for about a year now with lots of field operation trips on bicycle. 73 AA1TH.
@badger5th I am not into contests but QRP makes more sense than most. I do QRP and I have found CW reports to be accurate. I have gone to salt water beaches and that really gives a boost
@burt2481 Is putting any of the ground radials in the salt water necessary or is it just being right next to the water all that's required? I imagine along the Cape Cod rail trail there are many areas where you could just pull off the bike path right next to salt water. There is a place in East Boston (Belle Isle Inlet marsh) that I might try. 73 AA1TH
Bert, I do have to agree with you on the dislike of contests. I do most of my operating on weekends. The problem is that is when all the contests happen. I am a CW guy mostly, and when there is a big contest on the main bands, they are pretty much shut down to regular QSO traffic. This weekend was the ARRL's RTTY contest, and significant portions of 80, 40, AND 20 were taken up with RTTY traffic. I just wish that contests were FEWER and FAR BETWEEN so we could enjoy COMMUNICATING. 73!
@burt2481 I only called you an ass not an asswipe get it right and hell I would say it to your face if I were closer. You make some valid points but don't condemn the entire contest community for the actions of a few. Do you enjoy being a ham or not? All you seem to do is put them down.
@barett1962 Most of my ham videos are positive if you care to look, now here is what you said re:asswipe
barett1962 has made a comment on Truth revealed about ham radio:

You keep on agreeing with me when I point out your false arguments. @k4xs I agree it was a stupid comparison. Contesters are merely pigs and liars whereas the Nazis were brutal murderers. But why do contesters have a Nazi contest? (CQ SS)
You bet cheating was the wrong word. One is easily DQed for cheating in a contest, whether it is a state QSO party, ARRL or CQ sponsored. So we have settled that item. Sponsors have no problem with 59 as a report, so I guess 100,000 contesters are wrong and you are right. Uh, not likely. The ARRL as well as other members of the IARU decreed no contesting in WARC bands, so I suppose all 100+ organizations are in a huge conspiracy for contesters. Can you say paranoia?
In a contest such as the one you are in people give a report. It is not "cheating" to give a 59001. One is free to give any report they wish. I have gotten 48, 57 and many other signal reports in a contest and log them as such. In the NAQP the exchange is simply name and state. I suppose you think it's cheating to give a nickname or a name that you made up for the contest. Been a ham for 49 years and the ARRL, not contesters designated WARC as non-contest bands. Complain to them. 73, XS
@k4xs Cheating was the wrong word, esspecially since all contesters "cheat" it is not really cheating. Contesters lie. I have been a ham 52 years. Saying the ARRL did it, not completely accurate, the ARRL is beholding to the contesters, so the ARRL did what they were told to.
You don't like contests...don't do them. You don't like a certain contest format, make up your own. WARC bands were expressly designated as non contest bands, that's why there are no contests on WARC bands.
@k4xs I don't like people who cheat, so I do not associate with them. But contesters INVADE who band segments pushing out everyone else. If the WARC bands are so damn good put the contesters on them. Again great video Burt, really enjoyed it. As you can see, also contesters are just people, just like volleyball players. I was wondering, when you're playing volleyball, do you want to get to know the people in the other team by name and their backgrounds or just play a nice game of volleyball and probably score some points. When bands get crowded, I agree people who don't attend should have some bandwith as well but come om Burt, there's plenty of space (also for volleyball players) ;-)
@bugabootang I played today, frequently afterwards we go out to lunch and SEE each other face to face, WE SOCIALIZE. It is not like contesters where they JUST score points. There is not plenty of space on weekends. When we play we take half the gym, leaving room for others.
@burt2481 That's what contest clubs/groups do as well here (PA). Enjoy a meal together, put up/climb towers, chit chat, test new antennes etc. It's a social happening. I don't like the people you describe, regardless if they're contesters. For every well trained volleyballplayer (they are all rubbish I'm sure), I'll show you a well trained social radio amateur that does enjoy a contest now and then and is interested in people and culture. That's (I think) the point you should be making.
I must say though, too many people have taken your comments to heart and have overreacted in a way that emotionally drains them.
I personally think they should harden up, but at the end of the day, they don't have a right telling you what is "correct", as much as you preaching to them what is "correct".
What have I thought about your views? I'm seldom. Some are right on the money, others are way left field.
k10Ik you are a waste of fkn human being ,, Jesus ,., so many people are starving on this planet and all you do is bitch bicth bicth ,,,,,,,,,,, holy Jesus ..you make my mother inlaw look like an angel .. what you are doing to this hobby G. W. Bush did to the USA .. shut the &*&$ up cant you say or teach something positive other than being such a fkn HEMORRHOID ?
at least i say it like it is ,,, yes i did judge you, cause you do the same but in a NEGATIVE way the world is FkDup cause og morons like you I dont even know why i waste my time > do something positive for the human race Anyways you are a waste you think you are GODS gift to the Ham radio world ,,, please go see a shrink
@Conde61 Your vocabulary is so limited, can you not use the F-word? In the real word I am quite average but yes among the social losers called hams I am king.
i agree, youre not a loser ,, you are a moron .. sorry if i offended any losers that agree with you The problem with you is that you never ever once left the USA you consider yourself an American and yet you never filled the boots of a soldier you never fought a war . you are all talk and no action yeap like you said in one of your videos they are all Heros behind a mike yeap you are my hero IM PROUD OF SERVINF MY COUNTRY for LOSERS LIKE YOU ... moron
@Conde61 a person of subnormal intelligence is a moron, so as a retired teacher, an amateur extra, holder of A+ and Net+ certifications, FCC 1st Class Radio Telephone, college graduate, you say I am the moron?
What words are "SERVINF ", youre ", "yeap"?
I was in the USAF. I have been to 10 countries and Canada
You said, "i agree, youre not a loser " then said, "LOSERS LIKE YOU ... moron"
Which is it?
A reader here would wonder who is the loser and/or moron.
i agree, youre not a loser ,, you are a moron .. sorry if i offended any losers that agree with you The problem with you is that you never ever once left the USA you consider yourself an American and yet you never filled the boots of a soldier you never fought a war . you are all talk and no action yeap like you said in one of your videos they are all Heros behind a mike yeap you are my hero IM PROUD OF SERVING MY COUNTRY for LOSERS LIKE YOU ... moron
@Conde61 My call is not k10ik, it is K1OIK. You say I bitch? What do you think you are doing? I have far more POSITIVE ham radio videos than negative, IF YOU DID NOT OPEN MOUTH FIRST and bother to look. Check Beauty in ham radio, Nearfests, Field day etc. then see if you can be FAIR.
Pat and Bill have great great skills in patience. You have an axe to grind. I would suggest you sell your equipment and make videos about the pointless aspects of something else that you don't like.
You run QRP, many contest ops are running legal limit. They walk all over you and you feel like you don't stand a chance. Isn't that what really drives you to despise contesting?
Incidentally, I despise QRP ops. They feel they must let everyone know they are running QRP, as if it were really relevant. They also feel they should get some priority during a pileoup.
@mbtjr Your comments are good. I depise contester because most are pigs, stomping all over the band segments.
I do feel when I run QRP I must tell everyone. Someone using the minimum does deserve some priority. I take QRP to the beach, try running 1500 watts from what you carry in a backpack.
@burt2481 I understand being proud of your QRP signal being heard across the world. When a QRPer signs /QRP, they are tooting their own horns. Blowhards [whether they be QRPers or contesters [of which I am one] are not tolerated here. I'm a modest guy, mostly ouf of necessity since I have a modest setup. But even if I had stacked 6s on 10/15/20 and was running full legal limit, I just wouldn't brag about it.
@mbtjr It is common as a QRPer to receive reports ranging from 339-559, while the other station is getting a 599 from me, telling him I am running 5 watts explains the situation. It also tells him his receiver is OK and finally I do like to brag that I can do more with less. Having had stacked 6s on 10/15/20 and running full legal limit, merely says you can spend money.
Blowhard is a person who brags with nothing behind it.
@burt2481 Also, please do consider the fact that if you were a contester, you would be shown preferential treatment in scoring since the vast majority of contests have a category for QRP. You should really try it.
I'm not here to generate ill will though. As I mentioned in another reply, I enjoy your videos [and appreciate them]. I don't agree with everything you say, by a longshot... but I like what you have offered up. Mike/aa8ia
@burt2481 I'd wonder if we made an exchange during hte NAQP, but with you running QRP and me using an inferior antenna system I would doubt it. I do like the name exchange in the NAQP though. At least when I'd return with my report I could say "thanks bob, I'm Mike in Ohio." That's as personal as it's going to get in contesting to be sure. Of course, during the NAQP CW all sorts of "other" names were used. I didn't hear anybody on SSB claim they were "Moo" though.
YUP, he voted for Obama. ...... He cant play the game well enough to compete so he thinks there should not be a game. ... An Obama supporter for sure!
@kd5gua When I walk into school I have many kids running up to hug me, you need to look at a retirement video kids made for me posted on You Tube. After I retired I now sub and one teacher recently got mad at me because she thought I was not going to sub for her, she said she promised her kids I would come, so I changed my plans.
Why do you continue to projevct your failings on to me?
You seem to have an issue with everything and everyone who doesn't see ham radio the way YOU see it. Good luck trying to make the hobby evolve into what you want and the people to be who you want them to be. Or, maybe you should find a new hobby, as all your video's just complain about every part of it. Either way you are just a complainer.
I'm afraid you did all the anointing. Anyone who watches or even listens to your video's knows precisely what type of person you are. All the complaining about absolutely everything gets old very quickly. One video would be one thing but ALL your video's are one big complaint fest. And what about those people who are overweight but can't help it? Do you even care about what you say on here? Talking in private is one thing but to PUBLICLY tell people they are FAT like this is bad.
I like what you are saying and the community should relate to it realistically. I have been a radioman for 26 years in the Navy, now spectrum manager, soon will go after a license, but really, I can understand much of what you are saying. Purpose. What is the purpose of ham radio if you are not communicating? Flip the coin and I can understand the use of contesting to use the band... know this, uncle sugar is taking away band space and selling it off for capitol gain.
@w5txrmark He may be a yankee. I'll admit I don't think too much of yankees but have you ever actually listened to what he has to say and then scanned the band? He is exactly right and more importantly, like myself, he has the balls to tell it like it is. Sure some people may be soured from the hobby from his videos and sure he has a nack for pissing people off but if you get pissed off by what he says then that kinda makes it true doesn't it? Oh before you call me a yankee look at my call W6CSA
Hello Burt, these particular contesters seem like a motivated, sincere group of people. In addition, being this type of person, they quickly swung into action and provided resources for a needy cause. In other words, they are "doers" not whiners. It is always possible to point to specific crowding events on a particular band. But, as is obvious, although I am a rag chewer, contests are a chance to watch a good portion of the world parade the ham bands in a weekend. For you Burt - 73s es tnx hi
Where does he find all these unused freqs ? On 80 meters alone, there are probably 15 different groups of people that are on the air every night, that I can hear from Red Bluff. Were quickly running out of freqs for new groups to operate. When a contest starts up, it is total mayhem on 80. There's not enough room for everyone. I say let all contest take place on 11 meters :>)
Burt, with all due respect, many Hams engage in BOTH contesting and 'rag chewing'. Please understand that someone like me, who is a full time, stay at home caretaker for an Autistic girl, doesn't always have the time to 'rag chew', so to be able to make some quick DX contacts is thrilling to an extent. It still allows some of us to use our rigs, and frankly, it's FUN!
I have to agree with some aspects. I think that contesting is silly to some extent. I mean, what is the point of just getting your name and call sign and then moving to the next person. Seems like a waste of a day to me. I would rather have a handful of DXer's that I actually know and can talk aobut things with. I don't think all contesters are low lifes though. I think during contests some parts of the band should be free though for users who don't contest.
most of the internet probably 99.9% need to see this video and learn that people can argue and have opposing views and not talk like a moron or put each other down every 2 second
Had a friend who downed a six-pack of Bud in short order and got into a wild arguement with the Voice of America broadcasting in special English with 250KW during some world wide contest on 40 Meters once.
When the contesters are hogging the bands they need to realize that others don't contest. Contesting is so impersonal, I don't do it, I did some in the past but found it boring with flea power. All the power in the world, just to get 59 every time? I don't think so. I would rather know your likes and dislikes rather than a 5 second contact in a contest.
So is this them people i made my new videyo about? I turned on my radio with all them extra chanels an heard a bunch of people callin 'cq corntest'. go watch my new video since you seem like you know about these corntest people.
I like contests that have cash prizes. Let us have a contest that demonstrats skill, or talent. I am skilled at holding my breath after taking in a 10 second bong hit. I challenge every radio amateur to take a bong hit, hold in the smoke while the other station talks in a qso. This will make most qsos shorter, and give more meaning. maybe we could discuss quantum physics instead of "what a hassle I went through to get my license". Burt, you are a trip. I remember you from usenet. Stay coo,l N8TB
QUESTION for you, Burt. If we agree to stay in a certian portion of the band, will non-contesters also agree to STAY OUT of "our" portion? Nets, DX=peditions, ragchews, ect.? Answer please.
So, if we were to stay, maybe 3900 - 4000 Khz on 75 m ssb, you will have no problem telling the 3905 Century Club boys, they are no longer able operate their net on that freq.? Suuuure. tell me another. Burt, get used to this. We aren't leaving. No matter how much you cry.
Ah, so now you resort to name calling, huh Burt? Well, I have one for you. I'm a pig, but you are an asshole. How's that? I earned 100% of my ham ticket, and there is no way I'm going to be limited to 75% of the band. How do you propose to enforce this? Burt, you are a true e-penis. AN e-penis is a penis that rises up, via the internet. Pigs..wow, you a true jackoff.
I merely called contesters pigs. Of course there are exceptions, clearly not you as I now see as you compare the word pig which may not have applied to you to the many REPEATED profanities you use on me. There more you do it the more you defame yourself and the contesters you represent. I could block you or remove your comments but I want others to see how contesters are
There are only 3, maybe 4 weekends a year that the SSB protion of the bands are overloaded with contesters. So, 8 days out of 365 day a year, contesters overwhelm the bands. That gives 357 days a year to talk about you latest surgery, WX, or politics. Seems a bit one sided, doesn't it Burt? Hence, my WARC comment. Just use CW, or WARC during those weekends, and let the contesters have some fun. Look, there are poor contesters, but, trust me, there just as many poor NON contesters out there.
Contesters are pigs, they infiltrate all parts of a band segment. I am fine with them having 75% of the band segment. In a CW contest you find their droppings right through the digital sections. Cut the crap about 3 or 4 weekends. Look at the ARRL contest schedule.
During the IARU contest a couple weeks ago, there were actually signals on 10 and 15 meters. Take a tune right now...tell me how many signals you hear. In my opinion, contester are actually SAVING the hobby, by actually USING our spectrum.
Burt, I must say that this video was done in good taste and contains meaningful conversation. Unlike the other videos you have posted. I knew in reality you were are good guy with good common sense. You just like to rattle peoples cages.
Once again, your videos prove to be the elixir we all need more of. After all, if we can't laugh at ourselves, then we're really in trouble. I'm hoping to chat with you on 80 or 75 sometime.
Unfortunately some Amateurs are not as reasonable as these people. Much of the dissension on the bands is merely a reflection of society, as we have become less tolerant and civil toward each other. I'd like to see more details exchanged in contests to make it more challenging and interesting. Usually there is plenty of spectrum available if I take the time to search. Sometimes, however, I just have to turn the radio off and take my telescope out to look at the stars or go for a bike ride.
73 AA1TH.

I'm seldom. Some are right on the money, others are way left field.

burt2481 1 year ago
You run QRP, many contest ops are running legal limit. They walk all over you and you feel like you don't stand a chance. Isn't that what really drives you to despise contesting?
Incidentally, I despise QRP ops. They feel they must let everyone know they are running QRP, as if it were really relevant. They also feel they should get some priority during a pileoup.
mbtjr 1 year ago
@mbtjr Your comments are good. I depise contester because most are pigs, stomping all over the band segments.
I do feel when I run QRP I must tell everyone. Someone using the minimum does deserve some priority. I take QRP to the beach, try running 1500 watts from what you carry in a backpack.
burt2481 1 year ago
@burt2481 I understand being proud of your QRP signal being heard across the world. When a QRPer signs /QRP, they are tooting their own horns. Blowhards [whether they be QRPers or contesters [of which I am one] are not tolerated here. I'm a modest guy, mostly ouf of necessity since I have a modest setup. But even if I had stacked 6s on 10/15/20 and was running full legal limit, I just wouldn't brag about it.
mbtjr 1 year ago
@mbtjr It is common as a QRPer to receive reports ranging from 339-559, while the other station is getting a 599 from me, telling him I am running 5 watts explains the situation. It also tells him his receiver is OK and finally I do like to brag that I can do more with less. Having had stacked 6s on 10/15/20 and running full legal limit, merely says you can spend money.
Blowhard is a person who brags with nothing behind it.
burt2481 1 year ago
@burt2481 Also, please do consider the fact that if you were a contester, you would be shown preferential treatment in scoring since the vast majority of contests have a category for QRP. You should really try it.
I'm not here to generate ill will though. As I mentioned in another reply, I enjoy your videos [and appreciate them]. I don't agree with everything you say, by a longshot... but I like what you have offered up. Mike/aa8ia

@mbtjr I accidently participated in this weekends NA QSO Party as I was testing out my 1500, see my review on the Flex 1500
It was a simple exchange and was useful to test. I did not care about "points."
You are NOT generating anything but good will with me.
burt2481 1 year ago
@burt2481 I'd wonder if we made an exchange during hte NAQP, but with you running QRP and me using an inferior antenna system I would doubt it. I do like the name exchange in the NAQP though. At least when I'd return with my report I could say "thanks bob, I'm Mike in Ohio." That's as personal as it's going to get in contesting to be sure. Of course, during the NAQP CW all sorts of "other" names were used. I didn't hear anybody on SSB claim they were "Moo" though.

AudiophileTubes 2 years ago
I have to agree with some aspects. I think that contesting is silly to some extent. I mean, what is the point of just getting your name and call sign and then moving to the next person. Seems like a waste of a day to me. I would rather have a handful of DXer's that I actually know and can talk aobut things with. I don't think all contesters are low lifes though. I think during contests some parts of the band should be free though for users who don't contest.

Answer please.

burt2481 2 years ago
So, if we were to stay, maybe 3900 - 4000 Khz on 75 m ssb, you will have no problem telling the 3905 Century Club boys, they are no longer able operate their net on that freq.? Suuuure. tell me another. Burt, get used to this. We aren't leaving. No matter how much you cry.
ibew1jw 2 years ago
Nets are almost as bad as contesters.
I know you are not leaving, pigs find it difficult to leave the trough.
burt2481 2 years ago
Ah, so now you resort to name calling, huh Burt? Well, I have one for you. I'm a pig, but you are an asshole. How's that? I earned 100% of my ham ticket, and there is no way I'm going to be limited to 75% of the band. How do you propose to enforce this? Burt, you are a true e-penis. Look, there are poor contesters, but, trust me, there just as many poor NON contesters out there.
ibew1jw 2 years ago
Contesters are pigs, they infiltrate all parts of a band segment. I am fine with them having 75% of the band segment. In a CW contest you find their droppings right through the digital sections. Cut the crap about 3 or 4 weekends. Look at the ARRL contest schedule.
burt2481 2 years ago
I just looked, Burt. 90% of the listed contests take up LESS than your desired 75% of the band.
ibew1jw 2 years ago 2
I think you forgot the state contests. Even so I want 25% with NO contesters in it. You find them everywhere
burt2481 2 years ago
During the IARU contest a couple weeks ago, there were actually signals on 10 and 15 meters. Take a tune right now...tell me how many signals you hear. In my opinion, contester are actually SAVING the hobby, by actually USING our spectrum.
