More like a bone crunching prime!!!! (water in the cylinders causing savage water hammer in the valve chests and cylinders) for what you see there isn't steam, thats water. (flashed to steam) I'd get sacked for that. How those cylinder covers are still on I will never know but they are lucky that the loco made it home. Poor engine. the fireman wouldn't be a popular fella after this performance.
spectacular display?? more like a bone grinding prime!! (water in the cylinders causing emense damage to the running gear on the loco) for what you see pouring from that engine is not steam it is/was water. how the cylinder covers are still attached I don't know mind you they are only just holding on. The EP valves are blowing there little brains out. Poor loco. I bet the fireman wasn't a very popular person after this. Still a grat piece of footage though. Good work
It looks like the spectacular display is due to the loco priming badly and if the Cardew valves weren't doing their job it might have blown a cylinder cover!
@fordlandau Not wrong there, Some drivers did play up to the cameras. Why not,nearly 50 years later we are still enjoying that day. Also thankyou to the camra man. Neither could have known that there would be sush a thing as Youtube...Great video.....Great memories......
@fordlandau Maybe, But the fireman was a little bit keen on the water. That is a monster prime. Thats an awful sight for any engineman to see. You can see how the engine is pouring steam everywhere, thats where the prime has destoyed the packing and the glands on the cylinders and valve chest.
One if not both cylinders seem to be loosing rather a lot of steam. Being 1967, I assume that the loco was not being maintained by NSWGR to the same standard that it once would have been.
WELL it certainly is a STEAM engine after all !!

It's the wrong soundtrack, which actually sounds like an AD60 Garratt at the same location.

@chiefchook
I can assure you that the soundtrack was recorded onto the film at the time. You may notice the 38 whistle as it passes.

An engine that may be due for a washout.

One very sick engine.

Hmmm. An engine badly in need of a washout. Priming badly until near the top of the grade.
