You kidding--this is the definition of SOUL==whenst my boys The Good Ole Grateful Dead stole this from (and always gave him credit). I have listened to this cut hundreds of times, but with the lack of comments had to make one.
I could listen to Bobby Blue Bland 24/7. I was seven years old when I first heard Further on Up the Road. I sang all the lyrics not having a clue as to what the song was about. I was smitten then, and I am STILL a huge fan.
A real classic, one of the great blues shouters/balladeers of the 20th century, the likes of which they don't make any more. A true original-often imitated, never duplicated. krxn11
@colartmovees.... Back in the day "the 60's" we wore suits with covered buttons and leather ties; the girls wore tight dresses, we met at a local place where the band was rockin... and had a "ball." We had all the moves that would make you want to join in... no, the dance was what it was all about, and the love of the music was real "SOUL" you really missed something.
@hippieinmississippi The Dead are the reason I even discovered the song! And in turn, people like Bobby Blue Bland had a HUGE part in making the Dead that unique band they are. Both versions are brilliant!!
Ahhhh. From "Two Steps from the Blues." IMHO, the most perfect record of all time. I wore out three copies learning all the great guitar work on it, then getting the notes to sit right in the groove. Ray Charles was great, B.B., Albert and Freddie King were/are great, T-Bone was great, Muddy was great, but NOBODY sings like Bobby.
what could be better than this? the only soul voice even better than than the genius ray charles and the tightest horn section in history. i have drunk from this life giving cup ever since i first heard it almost 50 years ago. thank you mr blue. god bless you.
I've been trying to find "Yield Not to Temptation without success - does anyone know where I can find this by Bobby Bland ? I used to practice playing my drums to it, and just loved it !!!
@wmccommis It was on a 2 CD best of MCA put out in the 90s (Best of Duke-Peacock Years Vol 2 I think) but if you go to amazon you can find it (and buy if you wish) on THE ANTHOLOGY
always did like this one. it didn't come back to mind though until I heard it in the movie Eves Bayou.... At least I think they played it. Great excellent song & movie.
I still have my Bobby "Blue" Bland album I got in the very early 60's: Two Steps From The 'Blues" and it is pure gold. Everything on that album is the best of the best.
I grew up in San Dimas in the Pomona Valley of Southern California cruising Henry's and eating In-N-Out Burgers..........also the best of the best.
2 dislikes for this greatest of all blues songs and greatest of blues singers? Kick them off of YouTube..Greatest blues classic of all time, even the Grateful Dead covered this song...It doesn't get any better than that...
Bobby Bland is the greatest of all the R&B soul singers. I saw him play over 20 times in the sixties and had the honor to see him 9n 2008 and 2010. He does not have the powerful voice anymore but he is still 'The Man.' "Turn On Your Lovelight' along with 'Don't Cry No More' are absolute gems. I remember the great guitarist Wayne Bennett and Al'TNT' Braggs in shows in Houston at the Palladium Ballroom on Southmore St. Those were the great days of blues.
robert plant sings part of this lyric in the middle of a live version of whole lotta love from 1975. so i google the lyric, it eventually leads to me to the title of the song, and eventually to here. pretty cool to hear the origins of this music.
The difference between Solomon Burke's version of this song is he is leading everyone into a spiritual praise unto God!, and Bobby Blue's version makes you get on the dance floor and shake what yo moma gave you!
If you could only take one soul song with you - this is the top contender. Fantastic on every level from the heartful vocals to the absolutely kick-ass full band. No wonder there are so many covers of this beauty with the Grateful Dead being the most outrageous. Thanks xraysoulclub for the posting.
Recorded in Nashville TN on 09/27/1961. Wayne Bennett (guitar), Skippy Brooks (piano), Hamp Simmons (bass), and the great Jabo Starks (drums). Song credited to arranger Joe Scott & a "Deadric Malone" a.ka. label owner Don Robey, who probably purchased the rights from some starving song writer.
I grew up listening to BB King and Bobby Blue Bland and all the oldies. This was a favorite of mine and I never knew the name. How about this is the song that plays at the beginning of Eve's Bayou and this is how I was able to tell my mom what song I was talking about! This is the best!
I drive over the road, and listen to the Blues on Sirus. This song, like so many others, can really make your day. It would be nice to have seen a lot of these performers live.
@susandiane311 bobby blue bland is not a household name.. criminal, really. once you hear him sing " & let it shine shine shine, let it shine".. you're a totally different person. stormy monday is awesome as well.

People don't "get" that Bobby did it first; they only know the Grateful Dead version. Sad! I like the idea of him representing "relaxed intensity."
