Wanna know why you can't break blocks and fall through without noclip? This is number 1: A glitch number 2: A lil bit of programming and number 3: A prevention. If you go on further you could break the game. Those are Ghost blocks. You'll fall into the void and die.

Every world has a far land (nether, overworld. If you jump into the far you'll start dieing. It takes 800 to 900 hours to walk to the far lands of both worlds. Most people use MCEdit to get to the far lands.

The reason it will not allow you to modify the blocks is because should you have built a portal there, the portal would have led out to a hard limit in the minecraft over-world farlands where chunks stop being random an are simply overwritten, that means that your changes propagate over the other chunks
