Pilot induced oscillations are a real problem for the MD-11 because of the reduced size of the horizontal stabilizer. Add wind gusts and you get two dead pilots.
He tryed to save the landing after a bad bounce, instead of throttling up and attempting to get airborne again. I can say that in the simulator, any bounce like this is always met with a power up on my part, regardless if im going to try and skim back down.....somthing like this may have been a delayed feel for the pitch and a seeming over correction down. Wind and airspeed may have had the plane softer than expected and coupled with the inability to get a feel for the pitch.....
OK.... @Codezorz Youre right, but the MD-11 won't let you use reverse thrust until there is weight on the main landing gear. @railsimulator1995 This was not an autolanding. The autopilot was disconnected somewhere around 500 feet.
What a stupid cunt, interrupting the best part about the video. Fuckin women, learn your place. And @protocol whatever the fuck, you don't apply reverse thrust until you're on the ground you stupid fuck. Go fly a plane, reverse thrust in midair and kill yourself moron. We'd all appreciate it. Pro troll's pro.
this could have been as simple as a missprogramming of the autopilot. A CATIIIA is autoland, CATII is not. They probably made a mistake and the plane ran itself straight into the ground. (note the hard landing). The size of the stabalizer doesnt matter IF it was trimmed correctly for the increase in pitch, this is why the MD11 had electric trim not manual.
I was readin the comments while listening, know i see what everyones sayin, fox can really fuck up the best parts of interviews thats for sure, he had me interested in his expla..........
Never interrupt someone who knows what they're talking about when you don't even know what you're talking about. Seriously, she calls herself a reporter? True media self-centeredness. That guy could've given the investigators a lead and she interrupts it. Wonderful job, Fox News. Merry Christmas from Toronto....NOT!
It`s hard to believe that a jet as large and heavy as the MD-11 would do this. Even in heavy winds, it should have been a normal landing. After observing the video several times, it look like the pilots came in with a lower than normal descent, the plane`s gear hit the runway hard. My conclusion..I think they didn`t FLARE soon enough ( applying the speed brakes .. those top flaps you see on top of wing that lift up to hold the plane down) and they didn`t engage reverse thrust soon enough.
@protocol63 Wow, you should stop acting like a smartass. That was like a 45 knot crosswind, a huge plane would be more affected by winds than a smaller plane. Flaring doesn't mean applying speed brakes. It's when you pitch the nose up so you land gently. And YES, captain obvious, they didn't flare soon enough, which is OBVIOUSLY why they bounced. I hate when people try to make something so obvious sound so complicated.
High wind landing. Bounced 3 times, broke off the main gear from the hard impact and flipped. The pilot seemed to push the nose down hard to compensate for the bounce but the gear failed and that's what caused it to flip and crash.
When he landed hard the plane bounced due to the wind creating lift as the flaps are fully extended the pilot made an error and as you can see tried putting it on the ground as soon as it bounced but instead killed himself and I didn't receive my package.
Rush Limaugh asks a reporter if the pilot`s killed were Dems or Repubs..." they were Repulicans...Rush

@protocol63 Actually Obama said it was Bush's fault and if you look closely you can see Bush running off the airport with a detonator in his hand. Dan Rather has a source, and MSNBC is reporting a negative story about Palin just because that's the media template. I get a chill up my leg just mentioning Obama's name...Chris Matthews.
What a stupid cow this reporter was. Mr Nash was trying to explain to this incredibly thick woman, about the pitch authority on the aircraft in question, and she was saying "yeah ...... yeah. ....." and then goes and interupts him.
I really wish these idiot reporters would not comment on things they have no idea about!!! It makes me mad !
Sorry Fox news lady that you know nothing about aircraft or flying, yet for some reason you've been given the responsibility to interview two airline pilots about this crashed MD-11. But you cut him off from making a very good point, but because none of that meant anything to you, you wanna move onto someone else whos just going to blow the story out of proportion and get drama queen points. Thanks Fox News, thanks.
yeah, i know, i wouldn't be suprised if the media decided to say that this airplane just exploded itself, the media blows everything out of porportion, blaming people for problems even though they didn't cause the problem, causing outrage against these people who are blamed, it even got one guy killed.

That bitch, he's talking about what he thinks and she just interrupts. WindShear, and he might have made it if he had just flared, but wheels touch down then the plane's computer automatically deploys the trust reverser, so they really can't pull up with the loss of power.
No kidding. Anything said that would cause us to have to pay attention, think, and understand is evidently not worth listening to - according to FOX News.
I love how the at the end of the video the guy giving a good technical account of the MD11's tailplane/stabalizer characteristics is rudely cut off by the female TV presenter.
He was probably too technical and boring for today's 'hysterical' media reporting!
